How one month held two full moons
A lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days. May has 31, so when a full moon lands right at the start of the month, the next one can still squeeze in before June. That is exactly what happened in 2026: the two full moons came about 29.6 days apart, both inside the same calendar month across the mainland US.
The second full moon in a calendar month is popularly called a blue moon. It is a modern calendar label, and the Moon does not turn blue. An older almanac rule counted blue moons differently, by seasons, but the monthly version is the one most people mean today. 2027 has none.
May 1: the Flower Moon in Scorpio
The first full moon carried the traditional May name, Flower Moon, from the season of spring bloom in the almanac list. It sat at about 11 degrees of Scorpio, opposite the Sun in Taurus. Scorpio is read in astrology as depth, intimacy, shared money and the urge to get to the bottom of things, and Taurus, the Sun's sign, as comfort, steadiness and what you own. A Scorpio full moon is often read as a moment when something under the surface comes up for air, especially around trust or resources you share with someone. Pluto stationed retrograde a few days later, on May 6.
May 31: the blue moon in Sagittarius
A month later the Moon was full again, at about 10 degrees of Sagittarius, opposite the Sun in Gemini. It peaked at 4:45 a.m. EDT, close to moonset on the East Coast, and at 1:45 a.m. PDT, high in the southern sky, so the night of May 30 into May 31 gave the best view. Sagittarius is read as the sign of travel, study, faith and big-picture thinking, and Gemini as the sign of detail and daily talk. The reading for this one runs along that line: a good moment to ask whether the many small things you are juggling still add up to something you believe in.
Two full moons in your chart
With two full moons in one month, astrologers look at two different parts of your chart in quick succession. In your birth chart, find the house that holds 11 degrees of Scorpio and the house that holds 10 degrees of Sagittarius. Those were the two areas in focus, often in neighboring houses, so the month can read as one theme in two steps. Planets close to those degrees, or to the opposite points in Taurus and Gemini, had the closest contact. What your moon sign means adds the emotional layer from your own natal Moon.
The timing, and where it changes
Both times come from the site's astronomy engine, and the lunar calendar puts them on your local clock. Here the US and Europe agree on the dates, May 1 and May 31, although the hours differ.
The previous full moon was the April 2026 full moon in Libra, on April 1 in Eastern time. The next was the June 2026 full moon, the Strawberry Moon in Capricorn. The cycle between new and full is explained step by step in the moon phases guide.

- Was there a blue moon in 2026?
- Yes. The May 31 full moon was a blue moon in the calendar sense, the second full moon in one calendar month. The name has nothing to do with color, and the Moon looked like any other full moon.
- Why did 2026 have thirteen full moons?
