§ 01
What a rising sign is
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that sat on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. Where the Sun sign is set by the date alone, the ascendant is set by the time and the place, because the whole zodiac wheels past the horizon once a day.
Astrologers read it as the face you meet the world with: your first impression, your instincts, the style you reach for before you think. It also fixes the frame of your birth chart, because the ascendant marks the start of the first house and sets where every other house begins.
§ 02
Why the birth time matters so much
The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a guess of even an hour can land you in the wrong sign. This calculator asks for your exact time for that reason, and reads the historical time zone of your birthplace so the ascendant is computed for the real sky over that spot, not a rounded one.
If you do not know your time, a birth certificate is the surest source. Without it, the tool falls back to local noon and flags the result as approximate, since a noon answer is only one of twelve the day could give.

Rising sign, Sun sign and Moon sign
Your Sun sign is your core, the Moon sign your inner weather, and the rising sign the way both reach the surface. Together they are often called the big three, the shorthand most astrologers start a reading from.
The ascendant is the piece a horoscope by Sun sign alone can never see, which is why two people born on the same day can feel so different. To read all three at once, the birth chart calculator draws the full wheel.
