Midheaven calculator: find your MC sign

Your Midheaven (MC) is the zodiac degree at the highest point of the sky when you were born. The MC starts the 10th house in most house systems, and astrology reads its sign as your public path: career, reputation and standing. It needs your birth time, because the MC changes sign about every two hours.

The MC in each sign

  • Aries

A Midheaven in Aries is read as a career built on initiative: pioneering, competitive, happiest when you start things and lead them. The work is to see a project through after the first rush.

  • Taurus

A Midheaven in Taurus is read as a path built slowly and steadily, often around money, craft, beauty or the land. Patience is the strength; the lesson is to change course when the ground has shifted.

  • Gemini

A Midheaven in Gemini is read as a public life made of words, ideas and variety: teaching, writing, selling, connecting. The lesson is to pick a thread and stay with it long enough to be known for it.

  • Cancer

A Midheaven in Cancer is read as a reputation for care: work that feeds, protects or looks after people, often tied to home or family. The lesson is to keep the job from absorbing all your feeling.

  • Leo

A Midheaven in Leo is read as a wish to be seen: leadership, performance, creative work that carries your name. The lesson is to share the credit and keep the generosity ahead of the applause.

  • Virgo

A Midheaven in Virgo is read as a career of skill and service: analysis, health, craft, work done carefully and well. The lesson is to let good enough be good enough and to claim the credit you earn.

  • Libra

A Midheaven in Libra is read as a public image of grace and fairness: law, design, diplomacy, any work done with partners. The lesson is to decide without waiting for everyone to agree.

  • Scorpio

A Midheaven in Scorpio is read as work with depth and intensity: research, psychology, finance, healing, anything that goes under the surface. The lesson is to use influence openly and share control.

  • Sagittarius

A Midheaven in Sagittarius is read as a career with a horizon: teaching, travel, publishing, law, any work that carries a belief. The lesson is to finish the details as well as the vision.

  • Capricorn

A Midheaven in Capricorn, the sign of the 10th house itself, is read as ambition with a long plan: structure, authority and slow, earned progress. The lesson is to let success include rest and warmth.

  • Aquarius

A Midheaven in Aquarius is read as an unconventional path: technology, science, the collective, work that changes how things are done. The lesson is to stay close to people while you break the mold.

  • Pisces

A Midheaven in Pisces is read as a calling that is creative or caring: art, music, healing, work that serves something larger. The lesson is to give the vision a structure so it can earn its keep.

How the twelve houses work, including the 10th

§ 01

What is the Midheaven?

The midheaven, or MC from the Latin medium coeli, is the point of the ecliptic that crosses your local meridian at the moment you were born: the degree of the zodiac highest in the sky. The IC (imum coeli) is the point directly opposite, 180 degrees away, beneath your feet. Together they form the vertical axis of the chart, the counterpart of the horizon axis of the ascendant and the descendant.

Astrologers read the MC as the public side of a life: your calling, your reputation and what you want to be known for. The IC is the private side: roots, home and family. Neither is a prediction. They are a traditional way to ask what a person is building and where it began.

§ 02

What does the 10th house say about career?

In the most widely used systems the MC is the cusp, the starting edge, of the 10th house. Astrology links this house to career, status, public life and the way authority treats you. The sign on the cusp is read as the style of that work, and the planets inside the house as the themes people notice first.

A planet in the 10th house, or close to the MC, is read as prominent in public life. Saturn there is read as discipline and slow promotion, Venus as charm and work in the arts or with people. These are traditions to think with, not verdicts on any career.

§ 03

What is the ruler of your MC?

Every sign has a ruling planet, and the ruler of your MC sign is read as the planet that steers your career. Its sign shows the setting and its house shows the area of life where your work tends to play out: a ruler in the 6th house points to daily service, one in the 11th to groups and networks. Traditional astrology uses the seven visible planets, so Scorpio is ruled by Mars, Aquarius by Saturn and Pisces by Jupiter. Modern astrology adds Pluto, Uranus and Neptune to those three signs.

The calculator shows both rulers when they differ and places each by sign, degree and house. Read the traditional ruler as the older, steadier layer and the modern one as an addition.

§ 04

MC and the 10th cusp

In Placidus and Koch houses the 10th house cusp is exactly the MC. Equal houses count 30 degrees at a time from the Ascendant, so their 10th cusp sits 270 degrees after it and is usually in a different degree, often a different sign, than the MC. Whole sign houses start every house at 0 degrees of a sign, so the 10th house begins at 0 degrees of the sign that is tenth from your rising sign.

That is why the calculator has a house system switch. The MC itself never changes; the 10th cusp and the list of planets in the 10th house can. Near the polar circles Placidus and Koch cannot be drawn, so equal houses stand in and the tool says so.

§ 05

MC, IC and the angles

The four angles of a chart are the Ascendant, the Descendant, the MC and the IC: the points where the ecliptic meets the horizon and the meridian. A planet within about 5 degrees of an angle is read as especially strong, and a planet close to the MC is the classic sign of a visible career. The calculator lists the IC and the planets in the 10th house so you can see both at a glance.

In most charts the MC and the rising sign are different signs, a Gemini Midheaven with Virgo rising, say. Astrologers read the two together: the Ascendant as how you meet the world and the MC as what you do in it.

§ 06

Why do you need your birth time for the MC?

The MC travels once around the zodiac every 24 hours, so it changes sign about every two hours and moves roughly a degree every four minutes. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have Midheavens in different signs, and a birth date alone says nothing about it. That is why the calculator does not guess at noon: without a time it shows no houses at all.

If you do not know your time, a birth certificate or a hospital record is the best source, then a parent's memory of the hour. A few minutes of error rarely changes the sign, but close to a sign change ten or fifteen minutes can. The rising sign calculator is the companion tool and needs the same time.

§ 07

How the MC is calculated

The calculator works out the sidereal time at your birthplace and the true obliquity of the ecliptic, then the longitude where the ecliptic crosses the meridian with the standard formula. The planets come from the VSOP87 theory and Meeus's lunar series, and the house cusps follow the usual Placidus, Koch, equal and whole sign rules. We check the MC and the cusps against the Swiss Ephemeris, and they agree to within a fraction of an arcminute.

Everything is computed in your browser, and the tool is free. To see the MC among all your planets and aspects, open the birth chart calculator; to find the sign setting on the other horizon, try the descendant calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Midheaven?

Enter your birth date, exact time and birthplace. The calculator works out the zodiac degree crossing the meridian above you at that moment. By hand you need the local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic, which is why a tool is easier.

What does the Midheaven mean?

Astrologers read it as your public side: your calling, your reputation and the way you are seen at work. It is a tradition to reflect on, not a forecast of your career.

Do I need my birth time for the MC?

Yes. The MC changes sign about every two hours, so without a time it cannot be placed. The calculator shows nothing house-based when no time is given, rather than guessing.

Is the MC the 10th house cusp?

In Placidus and Koch houses, yes. In equal and whole sign houses the 10th cusp can sit elsewhere, though the MC itself never moves. The tool shows all four systems.
