Vertex calculator: find your Vertex sign

The Vertex is a calculated point on the western side of your chart, where the ecliptic crosses the prime vertical. Astrologers read it as the place of meetings that feel destined, and in middle latitudes it falls in the 5th to 8th house. It needs your birth time, because the Vertex changes sign about every two hours.

Your Vertex

The Vertex sits on the western side of the chart, where the path of the Sun crosses the line running from east to west through the sky overhead.

The record

Enter your birth date, time and place, then press the button. You get the sign, degree and house of your Vertex, the Antivertex and the planets close to it.

Accuracy: the Vertex agrees with the Swiss Ephemeris to within a few arcseconds for charts in both hemispheres (1900 to 2099). Computed in your browser.

Enter your birth date, time and birthplace. You get your Vertex sign and degree, its house in Placidus, whole sign, Koch or equal houses, the Antivertex and any planet within 5 degrees of the Vertex.

The Vertex in each sign, in short

  • Aries

A Vertex in Aries is read as meetings that arrive suddenly and with spark: people who push you to act, to lead, to say what you want. The lesson is to meet that energy without turning it into a contest.

  • Taurus

A Vertex in Taurus is read as encounters that feel steady and sensual: people who bring comfort, loyalty or a shared taste for good things. The lesson is to stay open when something new disturbs your routine.

  • Gemini

A Vertex in Gemini is read as chance conversations and quick links: a message, a class, a neighbor who becomes important. The lesson is to follow the talk that stays interesting.

  • Cancer

A Vertex in Cancer is read as meetings that feel like coming home: people who become family, or who stir old feelings of care. The lesson is to protect yourself without closing the door.

  • Leo

A Vertex in Leo is read as encounters with warm, vivid people who make you feel seen. The lesson is to give the same attention back.

  • Virgo

A Vertex in Virgo is read as meetings through work, health or a practical need: someone who helps you, or whom you help. The lesson is to see the person behind the task.

  • Libra

A Vertex in Libra is read as meetings that feel graceful and balanced: partners and allies who change how you see yourself. The lesson is to say what you want instead of keeping the peace.

  • Scorpio

A Vertex in Scorpio is read as intense encounters that go deep fast: people who change you or hold up a mirror. The lesson is to let closeness build without testing it.

  • Sagittarius

A Vertex in Sagittarius is read as meetings on the road, in study or in a shared belief: teachers, travelers, someone who widens your view. The lesson is to stay for the quiet days too.

  • Capricorn

A Vertex in Capricorn is read as encounters with serious, capable people, often through work or duty, that grow into lasting bonds. The lesson is to let warmth sit beside responsibility.

  • Aquarius

A Vertex in Aquarius is read as meetings through friends, groups or shared causes: people who feel like kindred minds and who change your path. The lesson is to allow closeness as well as freedom.

  • Pisces

A Vertex in Pisces is read as encounters that feel dreamlike or destined: souls that seem familiar, creative or healing contacts. The lesson is to keep your boundaries while you stay open.

How the twelve houses work

§ 01

What is the Vertex?

The Vertex is a calculated point in the western half of the chart. It is where the ecliptic, the path of the Sun and planets, crosses the prime vertical: the great circle that runs from due east through the point straight overhead to due west. Its opposite is the Antivertex, in the east. Together they form a third axis beside the horizon and the meridian.

Many modern astrologers read the Vertex as a point of meetings that feel destined and that change something. It has no ancient tradition behind it. It entered astrology in the 20th century and is treated as a minor, sensitive point, a tradition to think with and not a verdict.

§ 02

Which houses can the Vertex fall in?

Because it lies in the west, the Vertex falls in the western half of the chart. In the middle latitudes that means the 5th to the 8th house, most often the 7th or close to it; near the equator the range widens to the 4th through the 9th. Astrologers read the house as the area of life where the meetings come: a Vertex in the 5th through romance or creative work, in the 7th through partners, in the 11th through friends.

Which house it is depends on the house system, since the point itself does not move. The calculator shows all four systems, and says so when Placidus and Koch cannot be drawn near the polar circles.

§ 03

What do planets near the Vertex mean?

A planet within about 5 degrees of the Vertex, or of the Antivertex, is read as the one that colors those meetings. Venus is read as affection and attraction, Mars as sparks and conflict, Saturn as serious, lasting or delayed contact, Jupiter as generous people and opportunities, the Moon as familiarity and care.

The calculator lists the planets within 5 degrees of the Vertex. If it says none, the Vertex has no close companion, which is common: the point simply speaks for itself through its sign and house.

§ 04

Vertex and Antivertex

The Antivertex is the point opposite the Vertex, 180 degrees away, in the eastern half of the chart. Where the Vertex is read as what comes to you, the Antivertex is read as what you bring to the meeting: your own part in it. The two work as a pair, the way the ascendant and the descendant do.

The calculator shows the Antivertex sign and degree next to the Vertex. If your Vertex is in Libra, the Antivertex is in Aries, and the two signs are read together.

§ 05

Why you need your birth time

The Vertex turns once around the zodiac every 24 hours, as the Ascendant does, so it changes sign about every two hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have it in different signs, and a birth date alone says nothing about it. That is why the calculator does not guess at noon: without a time it shows no houses at all.

A birth certificate or hospital record is the best source for the time, then a parent's memory of the hour. A few minutes of error rarely changes the sign, but close to a sign change ten or fifteen minutes can. The rising sign calculator needs the same time.

§ 06

How the Vertex is calculated

The Vertex is the Ascendant formula run for the co-latitude, 90 degrees minus your latitude, at the opposite sidereal time, the RAMC plus 180 degrees, and then taken on the western side of the meridian. The calculator uses the true obliquity of the ecliptic and the apparent sidereal time of your birth moment.

We check the result against the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard reference, for charts in both hemispheres, and it agrees to within a few arcseconds. Everything is computed in your browser, and the tool is free. For the Vertex among all your planets and aspects, open the birth chart calculator.

§ 07

Is the Vertex the same as the descendant?

The Vertex is often mixed up with the descendant because both sit in the west and both are linked to other people. They are different points: the descendant is the Ascendant plus 180 degrees and starts the 7th house, while the Vertex is on the prime vertical and can lie in any of several houses. The descendant describes the partners you choose, the Vertex the meetings that seem to find you.

If you want the 7th house itself, use the descendant calculator; for the planet of attraction, the Venus sign calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the Vertex in astrology?

A calculated point in the west of the chart, where the ecliptic crosses the prime vertical. Modern astrologers read it as the point of meetings that feel destined. It is a minor point and a tradition, not a forecast.

How do I find my Vertex?

Enter your birth date, exact time and birthplace. The calculator runs the Ascendant formula for the co-latitude at the opposite sidereal time and gives the sign, degree and house.

Is the Vertex the descendant?

No. The descendant is the Ascendant plus 180 degrees and opens the 7th house. The Vertex lies on the prime vertical and usually falls in the 5th to 8th house.

Do I need my birth time?

Yes. It changes sign about every two hours, so without a time it cannot be placed. The calculator shows nothing house-based when no time is given.
