Annual profections calculator

Annual profections are a Hellenistic timing technique that moves your chart forward one house for each year of life. Counting from your ascendant, each birthday advances one sign, and the traditional ruler of that sign becomes your lord of the year. Enter your birth details and birth time to find yours.

Your profection year

At birth the year is house 1. Each birthday moves one house on, and after twelve years the cycle starts again.

The record

Enter your birth date, time and place, then press the button. You get this year's house, sign and lord of the year, and the next three years.

Accuracy: the ascendant sign comes from the same engine as the birth chart and agrees with the Swiss Ephemeris. The rest is arithmetic, so it is exact.

Enter your birth date, time and place. The calculator gives this year's profected house and sign, the lord of the year, where that planet stands in your chart, the dates the year runs and the next three years.

The twelve profection years, in short

  • 1House 1

A first house year puts you in the foreground: your body, your habits, your look and the way you start things. It is a year for beginnings and for asking who you are becoming.

  • 2House 2

A second house year turns to money, paid work and what you own and value. It is a year for building resources and checking what you really need.

  • 3House 3

A third house year centers on conversation, learning, siblings, neighbors and short trips. It is a year of messages, courses and everyday movement.

  • 4House 4

A fourth house year turns to home, family, roots and private life. It is a year for moving, mending a base or finding where you belong.

  • 5House 5

A fifth house year brings pleasure, romance, children and creative work. It is a year to play, to make things and to take chances that feel alive.

  • 6House 6

A sixth house year centers on daily work, health and routine. It is a year for fixing habits, caring for your body and doing the practical thing well.

  • 7House 7

A seventh house year puts partners in the foreground, in love, business and open disputes. It is a year of meeting others as equals and settling what you owe.

  • 8House 8

An eighth house year turns to shared money, debt, intimacy and deep change. It is a year of endings that clear space and of what you hold together with others.

  • 9House 9

A ninth house year opens the horizon: travel, study, teaching, beliefs and publishing. It is a year to widen your view and to learn from far away.

  • 10House 10

A tenth house year puts career, reputation and public life in the foreground. It is a year of visibility, responsibility and building something with your name on it.

  • 11House 11

An eleventh house year centers on friends, groups, hopes and networks. It is a year to find your people and to give your plans a wider audience.

  • 12House 12

A twelfth house year turns inward: rest, solitude, hidden matters and letting go. It is a quieter year that rewards retreat, reflection and unseen work.

How the twelve houses work

§ 01

What are annual profections?

Annual profections are among the oldest time-lord techniques in astrology, used by Hellenistic astrologers such as Vettius Valens and Paulus Alexandrinus. The idea is simple: each year of life activates one house of your chart, and the planet that rules that house becomes the lord of the year.

Where transits show what the sky does, a profection says which part of your chart is in focus this year and which planet is asked to answer for it. It gives a year a theme before anything has happened.

§ 02

How does the profection count work?

At birth you are in the 1st house, the sign of your ascendant. On your first birthday the profection moves to the 2nd house, on the second to the 3rd, and so on around the zodiac, one sign a year. At age 12 it is back in the 1st house, and the cycle repeats at 24, 36, 48 and 60.

The formula is your age modulo 12, plus one. At age 36 you are in house 1 again, and at 40 in house 5. The count uses whole sign houses, so the profected house is simply the sign that many steps on from your ascendant.

§ 03

What is the lord of the year?

The lord of the year is the traditional ruler of the profected sign: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Astrologers watch that planet closely for the year: its sign, its house in your birth chart and its aspects describe how the theme plays out, and transits to it are read as important. The calculator shows the lord's sign, degree and house in your chart.

§ 04

The birthday range

A profection year runs from one birthday to the day before the next. The calculator takes the birthday as the calendar date, so the year you are in changes on that date. Someone born on February 29 moves on March 1 in common years.

Some astrologers change year at the exact solar return instead. The difference is a few hours and does not change the house or the lord. The calculator shows the dates of the year you are in and of the next three, so you can plan ahead.

§ 05

The lord's house

The profected house itself always counts whole signs from the ascendant, because that is how the technique was built. The house where the lord stands in your birth chart is a separate question, and astrologers use several house systems for it.

The calculator lets you switch between Placidus, whole sign, Koch and equal houses for that step. If the lord's house changes between systems, read it from the system you usually use; the profected house stays the same.

§ 06

Why do profections need your birth time?

Profections count from the ascendant, and the ascendant moves through all twelve signs in a day, changing about every two hours. Two people born on the same day can have different profected houses, so a date alone gives no answer.

That is why the calculator does not guess at noon: without a time it shows no house at all. A birth certificate or a parent's memory is the best source. A few minutes of error rarely changes the sign, but close to a sign change they can.

§ 07

How it is calculated

The ascendant comes from the sidereal time at your birthplace and the true obliquity of the ecliptic, with the same engine as the rising sign calculator, and the sign is checked against the Swiss Ephemeris. Your age is counted on the calendar from your birth date to today, in your own time zone.

The rest is arithmetic on the signs, and nothing is stored. To see the profected house in the context of your whole chart, open the birth chart calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is my profection year?

It depends on your age. At birth you are in house 1, and each birthday moves you one house on. Enter your birth details and the calculator gives this year's house, sign and lord.

How do I find my lord of the year?

Take the sign of your profected house and use its traditional ruler: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Does the year start on my birthday?

Yes, in this calculator the year runs from one birthday to the day before the next. Some astrologers use the exact solar return instead, which differs by a few hours.

Do I need my birth time?

Yes. Profections count from your ascendant sign, which changes about every two hours. Without a time the calculator shows nothing house-based and does not guess.
