The 12 houses
The houses are the twelve areas of life a birth chart is divided into, from the self and money to partners, career and what stays hidden. This guide takes them one at a time: what each house covers, its natural sign and ruler, what the planets do there, and how to find it in your own chart.
How the houses work
Signs describe how a planet acts; houses describe where in life it acts. The chart divides the sky around your birthplace into twelve sectors. The count starts at the eastern horizon, runs down below the Earth, up through the western horizon and over the top back to the east. Because the horizon turns once a day, the houses move by about one sign every two hours, which is why a birth time is needed to place them.
Four points anchor the frame: the ascendant opens the 1st house, the IC the 4th, the descendant the 7th and the Midheaven the 10th. A planet is read in the house it occupies. A house with no planets is read through the sign on its cusp and the planet that rules that sign.
Placidus, whole sign and equal houses
House systems differ in how they divide the space between the angles. Placidus, the default in most Western software, divides the time each degree takes to rise, so its houses are unequal and one house can hold parts of two or three signs. Whole-sign houses, the oldest system and the standard in Vedic astrology, make each sign one house, starting with the rising sign. Equal houses count 30 degrees at a time from the ascendant.
Far from the equator Placidus houses stretch and squeeze, and inside the polar circles they cannot be computed at all. When a planet sits close to a cusp, compare both systems before reading it.
Angular, succedent and cadent houses
Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 begin at the four angles and are called angular; planets there are read as prominent and active. Houses 2, 5, 8 and 11 follow the angles and are called succedent, linked to resources and staying power. Houses 3, 6, 9 and 12 fall away from the angles and are called cadent, linked to learning, adjustment and change.
How to find a house in your chart
Enter your birth date, exact time and place in the birth chart calculator. The wheel numbers each house from the ascendant, and the record under it lists every planet with its sign and house number, which you can look up below. Your rising sign is the sign on the 1st house cusp. Without a birth time the houses cannot be placed, so the tool computes noon and marks the result as approximate.

The 1st house: self, body and first impressions
The 1st house begins exactly at the ascendant, the degree rising in the east at your birth, so it is the most personal house in the chart. It describes the body, the temperament you act from before you think, and the impression you make on people who do not know you yet. Traditional astrologers called it the house of life and read health and vitality here too.
The sign on its cusp is your rising sign, and the planet that rules that sign is your chart ruler, whose house and sign color the whole reading. In a Placidus chart the 1st house can cover more or less than one sign; with whole-sign houses it is the rising sign from 0 to 30 degrees.
Planets here
A planet in the 1st house is hard to hide. Mars here reads as directness and physical energy, Venus as charm and an eye for appearance, Saturn as reserve and a serious first impression, the Moon as a face that shows every mood. A planet within a few degrees of the ascendant, on either side, is read as especially strong.

The 2nd house: money, possessions and self-worth
The 2nd house covers what you own and earn and how you handle it: income, savings, possessions and the material resources you can draw on. It also covers what you value, which is why modern astrologers tie it to self-worth, the sense of what you are worth to yourself and to others.
Its natural sign is Taurus and its natural ruler Venus, so the house leans toward comfort, stability and things built slowly. To read yours, look at the sign on its cusp and where that sign's ruler sits: a 2nd house ruled from the 10th, for example, ties earnings to career and reputation.

Jupiter here is the classic signature of generosity, and of money that comes and goes freely. Saturn builds slowly and worries about scarcity, Venus earns through beauty, art or people, and Mars earns by effort and spends fast. An empty 2nd house is common and means nothing is missing: read its ruler instead.

The 3rd house: siblings, messages and the daily round
The 3rd house is the house of your near surroundings: brothers and sisters, neighbors, short trips, early schooling and every kind of everyday communication, from conversation to letters and messages. It describes how your mind works in ordinary use, how you learn and how you talk.
Gemini is its natural sign and Mercury its ruler. In the older tradition it was the joy of the Moon and the house of the goddess, where short journeys and local rites belonged. Today it is read most often for learning style, writing and the bond with siblings.
Planets here
Mercury is at home here and makes a quick, talkative mind. Saturn can mean a slow start at school, or a guarded sibling bond that deepens with age. Mars argues well and drives fast, and the Moon needs to talk things through before it settles.

The 4th house: home, family and roots
The 4th house starts at the IC, the lowest point of the chart, directly opposite the Midheaven. It is the foundation: home, family, the parent who shaped your private world, ancestry, and the property or land you live on. In the traditional reading it also shows the end of things and the conditions of later life.
Cancer is its natural sign and the Moon its ruler, so the house is about belonging and emotional security. The sign on the IC shows the kind of home you build, and its ruler shows where in life you go looking for that security.
Planets here
The Moon here wants deep roots and a real home base. Saturn can point to early responsibility at home, or to a house you work hard to own. Uranus moves often or grows up in an unusual household, and Venus makes a beautiful, welcoming home a priority.

The 5th house: pleasure, romance, children and creation
The 5th house is the house of what you do for joy: play, romance and dating, hobbies, games and risk, creative work, and children. Traditionally it was the house of good fortune and the joy of Venus, the place where life is enjoyed rather than managed.
Its natural sign is Leo and its natural ruler the Sun, so the house is about self-expression and being seen for what you make. The sign on the cusp describes how you have fun and fall in love, and its ruler shows where creativity finds an outlet.
Planets here
The Sun here wants an audience and a creative stage, and Venus loves romance and the arts. Jupiter is generous with children and luck, sometimes with bets. Saturn takes pleasure seriously and may come to creative work or parenthood later, with great commitment.

The 6th house: work, routine and health
The 6th house covers daily work and the habits that keep a life running: your job as a set of tasks, colleagues, service, diet, exercise and health, including minor illness. Traditionally it was also the house of servants and small animals, read today as the people you work alongside and your pets.
Virgo is its natural sign and Mercury its ruler, so the house rewards method and attention to detail. The sign on its cusp describes how you like to work and the kind of routine that keeps you well.
Planets here
Mars here works hard and can run itself down, while Saturn builds discipline and lasting habits. Neptune needs meaningful work and can be vague about health, and Venus looks for a pleasant workplace and good colleagues. Mercury is at home and makes an organized, practical worker.

The 7th house: partners, marriage and open rivals
The 7th house begins at the descendant, the point setting in the west at your birth, exactly opposite the ascendant. Where the 1st house is you, the 7th is the other person: marriage and committed partners, business partners and contracts, and the people you face openly, including rivals and opponents in a dispute.
Its natural sign is Libra and its ruler Venus. The sign on the descendant is always the opposite of your rising sign, so a Scorpio rising has Taurus on the 7th: the qualities you look for, and sometimes project, in a partner. Its ruler shows where you tend to meet partners and what the relationship asks of you.
Planets here
Venus here wants harmony and often a partner who brings beauty or ease. Saturn can mean marriage later, or to someone older, and bonds built to last. Mars attracts strong partners and open argument, and Uranus needs freedom inside commitment. An empty 7th house does not mean no marriage: read the sign on the descendant and its ruler.

The 8th house: shared resources, intimacy and endings
The 8th house covers what you share with others and what comes to you through them: a partner's money, debt, taxes, loans, insurance and inheritance. In the traditional reading it is also the house of death, and modern astrology reads intimacy, sexuality, crisis and deep psychological change here.
Its natural sign is Scorpio, ruled by Mars in the traditional scheme and by Pluto in the modern one. The sign on its cusp shows how you handle trust and loss, and its ruler shows where joint finances and close bonds play out.
Planets here
Pluto here looks for depth and control and does well at research. Jupiter can bring gains through partners or inheritance, while Saturn is careful with debt and with emotional exposure. The Moon feels other people's moods strongly and needs trust before intimacy.

The 9th house: travel, study, belief and meaning
The 9th house covers long journeys and foreign places, higher education, law, publishing, religion and philosophy: the ways you widen your horizon. In the traditional scheme it was the house of God and the joy of the Sun, and it is still read for faith and the search for meaning.
Sagittarius is its natural sign and Jupiter its ruler. The sign on its cusp describes what you believe and how you learn beyond the everyday, and its ruler shows where study or travel pulls you.
Planets here
Jupiter is at home here, and study, teaching and travel come easily. Mercury loves languages and ideas, Uranus changes beliefs suddenly, and Saturn studies long and seriously and may end up teaching or practicing law.

The 10th house: career, reputation and public life
The 10th house starts at the Midheaven, the degree of the zodiac culminating on the meridian above your birthplace. It describes vocation and career, public standing, achievement and authority, including your dealings with bosses and with the parent who stood for the outside world.
Capricorn is its natural sign and Saturn its ruler. The sign on the Midheaven describes the reputation you build and the work that fits you, and its ruler shows where career energy comes from. In a Placidus chart the Midheaven is the 10th cusp; in a whole-sign chart it can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

The Sun here wants recognition and often leadership. Saturn climbs slowly and keeps the position it wins, Jupiter brings opportunity and a good name, and the Moon can mean a career caring for the public, or a life lived in view of others.

The 11th house: friends, groups and hopes
The 11th house covers friends and allies, groups, networks, clubs and causes, and the hopes you hold for the future. Traditionally it was the house of the good spirit and the joy of Jupiter, and of the help that comes through patrons and influential friends.
Its natural sign is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn in the traditional scheme and by Uranus in modern astrology. The sign on its cusp describes the company you keep and the community you build, and its ruler shows where your aims point.
Planets here
Jupiter or Venus here brings helpful, well-placed friends, while Saturn keeps a few old and loyal ones. Uranus is drawn to unusual groups and causes, and Mars organizes people but can clash inside a group.

The 12th house: solitude, the hidden and the unconscious
The 12th house is the last one: the stretch of sky just above the eastern horizon, the part that rose in the two hours or so before you were born. It covers what is hidden or withdrawn: solitude and retreat, sleep and dreams, hospitals and institutions, secret enemies, and the habits of mind that act behind the scenes. Traditionally it was the house of the bad spirit and the joy of Saturn.
Its natural sign is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter in the traditional scheme and by Neptune in modern astrology. Modern readers treat it as the house of the unconscious and of spiritual practice, and the sign on its cusp shows how you rest and recover.
Planets here
Neptune here is drawn to art, music and quiet devotion. Saturn can mean fears carried privately, or strength found alone, and the Sun often does its best work behind the scenes. A 12th house planet within a few degrees of the ascendant is read as if it were rising.
