Saturn return calculator: when is my Saturn return?
Your Saturn return is when Saturn comes back to the exact place in the zodiac it held when you were born. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round, so the first return falls between ages 28 and 30, the second near 58 and the third near 88. Some returns are one exact date; many are three, because Saturn loops back over the degree while retrograde.

What a Saturn return is
Every planet in your birth chart sits at one degree of the zodiac. As the years pass, the planets move on and eventually come back to those degrees; the moment a planet returns to its birth position is its return. The Sun does it every year on your birthday, which is the idea behind a solar return. Saturn needs 29.46 years to go once round the Sun (NASA gives 10,759 days), so seen from Earth it comes back to the same place in the zodiac about every 29 and a half years.
That makes the Saturn return a once-a-generation event. Most people meet the first one between 28 and 30, the second between 57 and 60, and a long life reaches a third near 87 to 89. The calculator gives all three, so you can see which one you are in, or how far away the next one is.

Why there can be three exact dates
Seen from Earth, Saturn spends about four and a half months of every year moving backwards through the zodiac. The planet does not actually reverse; Earth, on its faster inner orbit, overtakes it, and Saturn appears to slide back against the stars. This is retrograde motion.
If one of those backward loops happens near your natal degree, Saturn crosses it three times: once moving forward, once backwards, and once forward again, usually over six to ten months. If the loop happens before or after the degree, there is only one crossing. Both are complete returns. The calculator lists every crossing with its direction, and the window around them: the time Saturn spends within three degrees of your natal Saturn, which is the span astrologers usually mean when they say someone is in their Saturn return.

What astrologers read in it
In astrology Saturn stands for time, structure, limits, responsibility and the results of effort. Its return is read as a review: the structures of the first 29 years get tested, and what no longer fits tends to fall away. Many people date a change of career, a move, a marriage or a breakup, or simply a new seriousness about their life to the years around 29. Liz Greene's book Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil (1976) made the modern, psychological reading of the planet popular, with Saturn as a teacher more than a punishment.
On the way, astrologers also watch Saturn's opposition to its birth place, near ages 14 and 44, as a halfway mark. The second return, near 58, is often read as a review of a life's work and the approach of its later chapters; the third, near 88, as a return to essentials. None of this is fixed. The dates are astronomy; the meaning is a tradition of interpretation, and how much weight to give it is yours to decide.

How the dates are computed
Your birth date, time and place are turned into Universal Time with the historical time zone rules of that place. Our engine then computes Saturn's apparent geocentric longitude at that instant from the VSOP87 planetary theory, corrected for light time, aberration and nutation, in the tropical zodiac. That is your natal Saturn. For each return the engine scans Saturn's path day by day around 29.5, 59 and 88 years after your birth and pins every crossing of the natal longitude to the minute.
We test the calculator against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris. For four test births between 1968 and 2001, every exact pass, 24 in all, agrees with Horizons to within five minutes. The calculation runs in your browser; your birth data is not sent to us or stored. Only the place search sends the name you type to Photon, the OpenStreetMap geocoder.
