Is Mercury retrograde right now?

No planet ever moves backward. Mercury orbits the Sun in 88 days, far faster than Earth, and three or four times a year it laps us on the inside. While it swings past, its position seen from Earth appears to drift backward against the zodiac for about three weeks, the way a slower car seems to roll backward as you overtake it.

Astronomers call the turning points stations: for a day or so around each one Mercury seems to stand almost still, then its apparent motion reverses. Retrograde begins at the first station and ends at the second, when the planet resumes its direct course.

After turning direct it needs a couple of weeks to re-cross that same stretch, and the post-shadow closes when it finally re-passes the degree where the retrograde began.

Many astrologers treat the shadows as the gentle on-ramp and off-ramp of a retrograde. Astronomically they simply mark the zone of sky Mercury visits three times in a row.

In astrology Mercury governs the words we choose, the messages we send and the routes we travel. When the planet appears to double back, tradition reads the moment as a cue to slow down with all of it: reread before sending, confirm plans, back up files, and expect old threads to resurface.
