§ 01

What happens at the February 2027 lunar eclipse?

The February 2027 lunar eclipse happens when the full moon falls near a lunar node, one of the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the Sun's path. Earth's shadow has a dark core, the umbra, and a pale outer ring, the penumbra. On February 20 the Moon only brushes the penumbra and misses the umbra entirely. By the site's eclipse calculation about 95 percent of the Moon's diameter sits inside the outer shadow at the peak, which is enough for a subtle gray shading along one edge and not enough to turn the Moon red. A red blood moon needs a total eclipse, and none of the three lunar eclipses of 2027 is total.

In Eastern time the outer shadow first touches the Moon at 4:10 p.m. EST, the greatest eclipse comes at 6:12 p.m., and the shadow leaves at 8:15 p.m. The whole event lasts about four hours. In New York the Moon is below the horizon at the start and up for the peak and the end. In Los Angeles the Moon stays below the horizon for all of it. Europe and Turkey have the Moon above the horizon for the whole event, from about 10:10 p.m. in Paris and Berlin on Saturday night to 2:15 a.m. on Sunday morning. Moonrise and shading are easiest to judge with the lunar calendar set to your own town.

§ 02

Why is it called the Snow Moon?

The almanac name for February's full moon is the Snow Moon, tied to the deep winter snow of the northern US. Like the rest of the list, it describes the season on the ground and has no effect on the Moon.

§ 03

Measured facts and astrological reading

In measured terms, the Moon stands at about 2 degrees of Virgo in the tropical zodiac, opposite the Sun at the same degree of Pisces. Mars is nearby at the start of Virgo, retrograde since January 10 and direct on April 1. Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, from February 9 to March 3, and Jupiter is retrograde in Leo until April 13.

Astrologers read Virgo as the sign of order, work, health and the small habits that keep life running. Pisces, with the Sun there, stands for rest, imagination and letting go. A Virgo full moon is traditionally read as a moment to check which routines still serve you, and an eclipse adds weight, because astrologers follow its effects over months and not days. A penumbral eclipse is read as the lightest kind, closer to an ordinary full moon with a note of emphasis than to a turning point. With Mercury retrograde as well, the tradition suggests reviewing details before committing to anything new.

§ 04

Where does the Snow Moon fall in your chart?

The February 2027 full moon stands at about 2 degrees of Virgo. Find that degree in your birth chart. The house there is read as the part of life that comes into focus, and the opposite house, holding early Pisces, as what balances it. A Sun, Moon or rising sign near those degrees, or near early Gemini or Sagittarius, makes the contact personal. What your moon sign means is a good next step if you want to see how your own Moon fits in.

§ 05

Last year's February full moon

The February 2026 full moon was exact on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 5:09 p.m. EST (22:09 UTC), with the Moon in Leo. In Sofia and Istanbul it was already February 2. The full moon 2026 calendar has the details for that date and the rest of the year.

§ 06

What comes after the Snow Moon

The new moon of March 8 follows at 4:30 a.m. EST in Pisces, and the next full moon is the March 2027 full moon on March 22, in Libra. The full moon 2027 calendar lists the other full moons and all five eclipses of the year.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is the full moon in February 2027?

The February 2027 full moon is exact on Saturday, February 20, at 6:24 p.m. EST, 23:24 UTC, which is 3:24 p.m. PST. In Paris, Berlin, Sofia and Istanbul it is already Sunday, February 21.

Is the February 2027 lunar eclipse visible?

Yes, from Europe, Turkey and parts of the US. The February 2027 eclipse is penumbral, so the Moon only passes through the pale outer part of Earth's shadow and dims slightly. By our calculation New York has the Moon up from about the middle of the event, while Los Angeles has it below the horizon the whole time.

What sign is the February 2027 full moon in?

The February 2027 full moon is in Virgo, at about 2 degrees, with the Sun opposite in Pisces. Astrologers read the Virgo and Pisces axis as order and daily work set against rest and imagination.
