Full Moon September 2027: the Harvest Moon in Pisces

The Harvest Moon is tied to the September equinox, not to the calendar month as such. Whichever full moon falls closest to the September equinox gets that name, so in some years the Harvest Moon falls on an October full moon. In 2027 the equinox comes on Thursday, September 23, at 2:02 a.m. EDT (06:02 UTC). The September 15 full moon is eight days before it, and the October full moon on the 15th is 22 days after, so September wins by a wide margin.

Folklore explains the name with farm work. Around the equinox the full Moon rises at nearly the same time on several evenings in a row, so bright moonlight follows sunset night after night, and farmers could keep bringing in crops after dark. That effect is real at mid northern latitudes. The lunar calendar shows the rise time for your own town. The exact moment is just after sunset in New York, so the Moon is up and bright within an hour or so of it.

The full moon is exact on Wednesday, September 15, at 7:04 p.m. EDT (23:04 UTC), which is 4:04 p.m. PDT on the Pacific coast. In Paris and Berlin it is 1:04 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, in Sofia and Istanbul 2:04 a.m. Both dates describe the same moment, so a European list showing the 16th is not wrong. The best view in the US comes on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

On the astronomy side, the Moon stands at about 23 degrees of Pisces in the tropical zodiac, directly opposite the Sun at the same degree of Virgo. Uranus turns retrograde in Gemini on the very day of the full moon, September 15, and stays retrograde until February 12, 2028. Saturn in Aries, Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius are already retrograde, so four slow planets are going backward together.

Astrologers read Pisces as the sign of rest, imagination, faith and letting go, and Virgo, where the Sun sits as the season turns toward autumn, as the sign of order, work, health and practical care. A Pisces full moon is traditionally read as a call to step out of the to-do list and check how you are doing underneath it. Taken together, the tradition suggests this is a good date to notice where tidying and planning have crowded out rest.

In your birth chart, the house that holds 23 degrees of Pisces is the area of life the Harvest Moon spotlights, and the house across from it, holding late Virgo, names what it is set against. People with the Sun, Moon or rising sign near 23 degrees of Pisces, Virgo, Gemini or Sagittarius get the closest contact.

It also helps to think in two-week steps. This full moon finishes the cycle that began at the new moon of August 31 in Virgo, at 1:41 p.m. EDT. If you started tidying a part of your life then, the full moon is the natural point to see how far it has come. What your moon sign means explains how your own Moon placement colors this.

The September 2026 full moon was exact on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 12:49 p.m. EDT (16:49 UTC), with the Moon in Aries, and it was the Harvest Moon of that year too. The full moon 2026 calendar has the details.

Before this came the August 2027 full moon on August 17, a penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius. The next new moon falls on September 29 at 10:36 p.m. EDT in Libra, and the next full moon, on October 15 in Aries, is listed in the full moon 2027 calendar with the remaining dates of the year.
