Two rows show a different date in UTC than in Eastern time. The April full moon is April 1 in the US and April 2 in UTC and Europe, and the December one is December 23 in the US and Christmas Eve in UTC. The June full moon works the other way round for Europe: it lands on June 29 in UTC but after midnight, June 30, in Paris or Berlin. None of this changes the sky, only the date on the calendar page. When a date looks a day off, check the time zone it was written for.
Month by month
January 3, Cancer. The Wolf Moon opened the year in the sign of home and family, with Jupiter in the same sign.
February 1, Leo. The Snow Moon rose almost exactly at full on the East Coast, in the sign of warmth and self-expression.
March 3, Virgo. The only total lunar eclipse of 2026, the blood moon, with 59 minutes of totality before dawn in the US.
April 1, Libra. The Pink Moon peaked late in the evening in the Americas, a full moon read around fairness and partnership.
May 1 and May 31, Scorpio and Sagittarius. Two full moons in one month: the Flower Moon, then the blue moon of the year.
June 29, Capricorn. The Strawberry Moon arrived hours after Mercury stationed retrograde in Cancer.
July 29, Aquarius. The Buck Moon, opposite the Sun in Leo, read as the self set against the group.
August 28, Pisces. A deep partial lunar eclipse around midnight Eastern time, visible from start to finish in New York.
September 26, Aries. The Harvest Moon, four days after the September equinox.
October 26, Taurus. The Hunter's Moon peaks twelve minutes after midnight Eastern time, with Mercury and Venus both retrograde.
November 24, Gemini. The Beaver Moon, two days before Thanksgiving and soon after Mercury and Venus turn direct.
December 23, Cancer. The Cold Moon closes the year two days after the winter solstice, in the same sign as January's.
Why 2026 has thirteen full moons and a blue moon
From one full moon to the next takes about 29.5 days on average. Twelve of those cycles add up to about 354 days, eleven short of a calendar year, so every two or three years an extra full moon fits in. In 2026 the extra one landed in May: a full moon on May 1 left room for another on May 31.
The second full moon in a calendar month is popularly called a blue moon. The name is a calendar label, and the Moon keeps its usual color. 2027, for comparison, has twelve full moons and no blue moon at all.
What a full moon is, and the phases around it
A full moon is the moment the Moon stands directly opposite the Sun as seen from Earth. Its sunlit half then faces us, and it shows as a complete disk that rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. The instant itself is a single minute, the one in the table, but the Moon looks full to the eye for about a day on either side.
Between two full moons the Moon runs through its moon phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. At the new moon the Moon sits between Earth and Sun with its dark side toward us. Astrology reads the waxing half of the cycle as a time for building and the waning half as a time for sorting, finishing and letting go. The full moon is the turning point between the two, which is why it is read as a time to see results more than to start things.
Most full moons are not eclipses. The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees to Earth's, so the full Moon usually passes above or below Earth's shadow. Only when a full moon happens near one of the two crossing points of the orbits does the shadow fall on it.

The eclipses of 2026: a blood moon and a partial
2026 has four eclipses in two pairs, each pair a new moon and a full moon about two weeks apart. An eclipse happens only when a new or full moon sits close to a lunar node, which is why they come in these small clusters.
- February 17, annular solar eclipse at the new moon in Aquarius. Its ring was visible only over Antarctica.
- March 3, total lunar eclipse at the full moon in Virgo, the blood moon of 2026. Totality lasted about 59 minutes, from 6:04 to 7:03 a.m. EST, and by our calculation Los Angeles had the Moon up for all of it, while New York lost it to moonset just after totality began.
- August 12, total solar eclipse at the new moon in Leo. Totality crossed Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, and New York saw only a small partial eclipse.
- August 28, partial lunar eclipse at the full moon in Pisces. About 93 percent of the Moon's diameter entered Earth's dark shadow, with greatest eclipse at 12:13 a.m. EDT, and New York had the Moon up for the whole event.
Astrologers read eclipses as turning points with a longer tail than an ordinary full or new moon, often months. Why eclipses matter goes into that tradition, and the moon and eclipses guide explains the mechanics step by step.
Traditional full moon names
The names in the table come from the North American almanac tradition, which gives each month's full moon a seasonal label: Wolf, Snow, Worm, Pink, Flower, Strawberry, Buck, Sturgeon, Harvest, Hunter's, Beaver and Cold. Two of them follow the equinox instead of the month. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, September 26 in 2026, and the Hunter's Moon is the one after it. Lists differ by region and source, and none of these names says anything about the Moon itself. We include them because many calendars use them, while the dates and times come from our own calculation.
What a full moon means in astrology
In astrology the Moon stands for feeling, instinct and what you need to feel safe. At the full moon it sits across from the Sun, which stands for will and direction, and tradition reads that opposition as a moment of fullness and clarity. Something started around the new moon two weeks earlier becomes visible, ripens or asks for a choice.
The advice that comes with it is calm: notice what comes up instead of forcing an outcome, and use the waning days afterward to tidy up. Many people find full moon days emotionally charged. NovaOracles treats this as a prompt for reflection, and nothing on this page is a forecast.
How to read the 2026 full moons for yourself
The calendar is the same for everyone; what differs is where each full moon lands in your own chart. Open your birth chart and note which houses hold your Sun, Moon and other planets. Astrologers read a full moon that falls on or opposite one of them as the one to watch, and a full moon in an empty part of your chart as one that passes quietly. Your natal Moon matters most here, and what your moon sign means explains how to read it.
The planets that turn retrograde during the year add another layer, from Mercury's three retrogrades to Saturn and Jupiter changing direction in December. Retrograde planets 2026 lists every one with dates. And if you are already planning ahead, full moon 2027 has next year's twelve full moons, starting on January 22, 2027, in Leo. The lunar calendar also offers a calendar feed, so every full moon, new moon and eclipse can land in your own calendar app.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- When is the next full moon?
- The line near the top of this page always names the next full moon, worked out by the site's astronomy engine. For the rest of 2026, the full moons fall on October 26 at 12:12 a.m. EDT in Taurus, November 24 at 9:54 a.m. EST in Gemini, and December 23 at 8:28 p.m. EST in Cancer.
- How many full moons are there in 2026?
- There are thirteen full moons in 2026. May has two, on May 1 and May 31, because the lunar cycle of about 29.5 days is a little shorter than most calendar months. The second one in May is the blue moon of the year.
- When is the blood moon in 2026?
- The blood moon of 2026 was the total lunar eclipse of March 3, with totality from 6:04 to 7:03 a.m. EST. The second lunar eclipse of the year, on August 28, was partial, so the Moon never turned fully red.
- What does a full moon mean in astrology?
- Astrologers read the full moon as the peak of the lunar month, when what started at the new moon two weeks earlier comes into view. It is read most personally where its sign and degree touch planets in your own birth chart.
