The next new moon is on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 2:02 a.m. EST (07:02 UTC), in Scorpio, and the last one of the year follows on December 8 in Sagittarius. After that, 2027 brings thirteen new moons, starting on January 7 in Capricorn. This new moon 2027 calendar lists every date with US Eastern time, UTC, sign and eclipse, plus the twelve new moons of 2028. Times are computed by our ephemeris engine; how we calculate. The lunar calendar converts each one to your own city.

§ 01

What is a new moon?

At the new moon the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. Its lit half faces the Sun, its dark half faces us, and we see nothing of it. It rises and sets with the Sun and stays hidden in daylight. A first thin crescent shows up a day or two later, low in the western sky after sunset.

Astronomically the new moon is a single moment: the instant when the Sun and the Moon stand in the same direction as seen from Earth. From one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days on average, a span astronomers call the synodic month. The eight moon phases between two new moons come from nothing more than the angle between Sun, Earth and Moon.

Because that instant lands on different calendar days in different time zones, a new moon can fall on one date in New York and the next date in London. All times on this page are US Eastern first, then UTC. Eastern time is EST in winter and EDT in summer: in 2027 clocks spring forward on March 14 and fall back on November 7, and in 2028 on March 12 and November 5.

§ 02

When are the remaining new moons in 2026?

After the new moon of Saturday, October 10, 2026 (11:50 a.m. EDT, 15:50 UTC, in Libra), two more new moons close the year.

Date (ET) Time (ET) Time (UTC) Sign Eclipse
Monday, November 9 2:02 a.m. EST 07:02, Nov 9 Scorpio 16°53' none
Tuesday, December 8 7:52 p.m. EST 00:52, Dec 9 Sagittarius 16°56' none

Both fall after US clocks went back on November 1, so both are in standard time. The November new moon lands in the small hours for the East Coast and late on Sunday, November 8, at 11:02 p.m. on the Pacific coast. The December new moon splits across two dates: it is the evening of December 8 across the Americas and already December 9 in UTC and in Europe. Each one has its own page with times for every US zone: the November 2026 new moon in Scorpio and the December 2026 new moon in Sagittarius.

Neither carries an eclipse. The two solar eclipses of 2026 came earlier in the year: the annular eclipse of February 17 in Aquarius, whose ring was visible only over Antarctica, and the total eclipse of August 12 in Leo, whose totality crossed Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain while New York saw only a small partial eclipse. How the full moons of the year line up with these dates is in the full moon 2026 calendar.

§ 03

When was the last new moon?

The last new moon before November 9, 2026, was on Saturday, October 10, at 11:50 a.m. EDT (15:50 UTC), with the Sun and the Moon together in Libra at 17°21'. People who ask about the "last new moon" often mean the last one of the year instead. In 2026 that is the new moon of December 8 at 7:52 p.m. EST in Sagittarius. In 2027 it is the new moon of Monday, December 27, at 3:12 p.m. EST in Capricorn.

To look up an earlier new moon of 2026, the July one for example, open the lunar calendar and page back month by month. It marks every new and full moon, computed for your time zone. What happens in the sky during the two weeks after a new moon is described in the posts on the waxing crescent moon and the waxing gibbous moon.

New moon 2027: all thirteen dates

2027 has thirteen new moons instead of the usual twelve. Twelve lunar cycles take about 354 days and the calendar year about 365, so the new moon drifts earlier each month, and now and then a thirteenth one fits in. In 2027 that happens in August, which holds two new moons. The second is sometimes called a black moon, after the blue moon, the second full moon in a month. It is folklore with no technical meaning.

Three of these dates read one day later in UTC and on European calendars: the July new moon is July 4 there, the September one September 30, and the November one November 28. The sky is the same everywhere; only the clock changes. The first new moon of the year has its own page, the January 2027 new moon in Capricorn, with times across the US and Europe.

Two of the thirteen are solar eclipses. On February 6 the Moon covers the center of the Sun and leaves a ring of light over the Southern Hemisphere. On August 2 the eclipse is total along a path across southern Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Arabia. Neither is visible from New York or Los Angeles. The solar eclipse 2027 guide follows the path city by city, and the full moon 2027 calendar shows which full moon follows each new moon, including the three penumbral lunar eclipses of the year.

The sign moves on from month to month for a simple reason. At the new moon the Moon stands next to the Sun, so it is in the Sun's sign, and the Sun changes sign about every 30 days. That is why the August 2 new moon is in Leo and the August 31 new moon is in Virgo, though both fall in the same calendar month. The degree column shows the drift that makes room for a thirteenth new moon: the new moon sits near 17 degrees of its sign from January to April and slides to under 6 degrees by December, fastest in summer, when the Sun moves at its slowest. 2027 opens and closes with a new moon in Capricorn.

§ 04

New moon 2028: all twelve dates

2028 goes back to twelve new moons. Two of them are solar eclipses: an annular one on January 26 and a total one on July 21 (July 22 in UTC).

Month Date (ET) Time (ET) Time (UTC) Sign Eclipse
January Wednesday, January 26 10:13 a.m. EST 15:13, Jan 26 Aquarius 6°11' annular solar eclipse

December Friday, December 15 9:06 p.m. EST 02:06, Dec 16 Sagittarius 24°38' none

In June and July 2028 the new moon falls in Cancer twice: on June 22 at the very start of the sign, and on July 21 on its last degree, shortly before the Sun moves into Leo. From August on, the new moons sit late in their signs, from 27 degrees of Leo in August to 24 degrees of Sagittarius in December. Like the July one, the October and December new moons fall on the next day in UTC.

§ 05

When is the new moon where you live?

The tables give US Eastern time and UTC. For the rest of the US, subtract one hour for Central, two for Mountain and three for Pacific. In winter, Central Europe is one hour ahead of UTC, so the January 7, 2027, new moon at 20:24 UTC is 9:24 p.m. in Paris and Berlin.

Watch the date. When a new moon falls close to midnight, it may sit on a different day on your calendar than in these tables. The November 9, 2026, new moon at 2:02 a.m. EST is still November 8 on the Pacific coast, and the July 3, 2027, new moon at 11:02 p.m. EDT is already July 4 in London. The lunar calendar does the conversion for any city, and it also offers a calendar feed, so every new moon, full moon and eclipse lands in your own calendar app, timed to the minute.

§ 06

New moon and the night sky

For stargazing, the new moon is the best time of the month. The Moon is missing from the night sky, so it does not wash it out. Faint stars, constellations and, where the sky is dark enough, the band of the Milky Way stand out more clearly. The nights just around the new moon work best, when the thin crescent shows only briefly after sunset or just before sunrise. The crescent before sunrise belongs to the waning crescent moon, the last phase before the next new moon.

Not every new moon is a solar eclipse. The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against Earth's, so the new Moon usually passes above or below the Sun. It only covers the Sun when the new moon falls close to a lunar node, one of the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. That is why only two of the thirteen new moons of 2027 are eclipses. The same geometry explains why most full moons are not lunar eclipses.

§ 07

What does the new moon mean in astrology?

In astrology the new moon stands for beginnings. The Sun and the Moon meet in the same sign, the light of will and the light of feeling come together, and the tradition reads that as a time to set an intention or start something small. Some people write down a sentence or two at the new moon and read it again at the next full moon. It is a quiet ritual for anyone who finds it useful.

The sign colors the beginning. The Scorpio new moon of November 9 is read as a time for depth and commitment, and the Sagittarius new moon of December 8 as a time for wide horizons and new directions. The two Capricorn new moons that frame 2027, on January 7 and December 27, are read as starts for plans that need patience. How strongly a new moon touches you, in this reading, depends on the house it falls in within your birth chart. To find the sign of your own Moon, use the moon sign calculator.

The date, time and sign of a new moon are astronomy, calculated in advance. The meaning is tradition, and a new moon asks nothing of you.

§ 08

New moon and full moon

The new moon and the full moon are the two poles of the same cycle. At the new moon the Moon stands next to the Sun, at the full moon opposite it, and in the roughly two weeks between them the Moon waxes. Astrology reads that as an arc: what starts as an intention at the new moon becomes visible in the weeks up to the full moon and comes to a peak or a close there.

The November 9 new moon is followed by the full moon of Tuesday, November 24, at 9:54 a.m. EST in Gemini, and the December 8 new moon by the full moon of Wednesday, December 23, at 8:28 p.m. EST in Cancer. Every full moon of this year is in the full moon 2026 calendar, and next year's in the full moon 2027 calendar. A full moon can also be a lunar eclipse, and the next dates are in lunar eclipse dates for 2026 to 2028.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When is the next new moon?

By our calculation the next new moon is on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 2:02 a.m. EST (07:02 UTC), in Scorpio. The last one of the year follows on Tuesday, December 8, at 7:52 p.m. EST, which is already December 9 in UTC, in Sagittarius. The first new moon of 2027 comes on January 7 at 3:24 p.m. EST.

How many new moons are there in 2027?

2027 has thirteen new moons, one more than usual, because the lunar cycle of about 29.5 days is shorter than most calendar months. August gets two, on August 2 and August 31. The second one is sometimes called a black moon, a popular label with no astronomical meaning.

Is a new moon a day or a moment?

Astronomically it is a moment: the instant when the Sun and the Moon line up in the same direction as seen from Earth. Because that instant lands on different calendar days in different time zones, a new moon can fall a day earlier in New York than in Europe, as it does on December 8, 2026.

Are there solar eclipses at the 2027 new moons?

Yes, two. The new moon of February 6, 2027, is an annular solar eclipse whose ring crosses the Southern Hemisphere, and the new moon of August 2, 2027, is a total solar eclipse over southern Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Arabia. Neither one is visible from New York or Los Angeles.

What does a new moon mean in astrology?

Astrologers read the new moon as the start of a lunar cycle and a time to set an intention. The sign it falls in colors the theme. That is an interpretation from tradition, and what you do with the date is up to you.
