§ 01What time and date is the January new moon?
The Moon lines up with the Sun at 20:24 UTC on Thursday, January 7. In the United States that is the afternoon: 3:24 p.m. Eastern, 2:24 p.m. Central, 1:24 p.m. Mountain and 12:24 p.m. Pacific. Mexico City is at 2:24 p.m. and Brasília 5:24 p.m. In Europe it is evening. London and Lisbon are at 8:24 p.m., Berlin, Paris, Rome and Madrid at 9:24 p.m. CET, Sofia and Bucharest at 10:24 p.m., and Istanbul at 11:24 p.m.
Every one of those clocks still shows January 7. The December new moon split across two dates, December 8 in the Americas and December 9 in Europe. This one gives a single date for anyone keeping a journal or planning a ritual from the Americas to Istanbul, which makes it an easy new moon to pin down.
The Moon is invisible at this point, lost in the glare of the Sun. A first thin crescent appears low in the western sky after sunset a day or two later, around January 8 or 9, if the evening is clear. The lunar calendar shows the phase and the sun and moon times at your location.
§ 02What are the moon phases in January 2027?
January 2027 has one new moon and one full moon. After the new moon of January 7, the Moon grows through the waxing crescent, first quarter and waxing gibbous to the full moon in Leo on January 22, the Wolf Moon. It then shrinks through the last quarter and the waning crescent toward the new moon of February 6, which is a solar eclipse.

The quarter moons are not in our tables. The lunar calendar gives their days for your city, along with moonrise and moonset.
§ 03Is the January new moon always in Capricorn?
Usually, though not every year. The Sun moves through Capricorn from the winter solstice, around December 21, to about January 20. A new moon in the first three weeks of January therefore falls in Capricorn, and one in the last days of the month falls in Aquarius. In 2027 the new moon comes early, on January 7, so it is a Capricorn new moon, with the Sun well inside the sign at 17 degrees.
2027 has a second new moon in Capricorn as well. The last new moon of the year, on Monday, December 27, at 3:12 p.m. EST, falls in the same sign after the solstice. The year opens and closes on a Capricorn new moon, and the full moon 2027 calendar lists all thirteen new moons of the year, with their times and signs.
§ 04Does Mercury retrograde affect the January 2027 new moon?
No. Mercury is direct at the January 2027 new moon and moving forward at normal speed. It stationed direct on November 13, 2026, after the autumn retrograde in Scorpio, so by January 7 it has been moving forward for almost eight weeks. The hours of that autumn window are in our Mercury retrograde October 2026 guide.
The next window is not far away. Mercury's pre-shadow opens on January 25, and the first retrograde of 2027 begins on February 9, in Pisces. Mercury retrograde 2027 lists all three windows of the year with their shadow dates. For people who time signatures, launches and big messages around the retrograde, the January new moon is the last new moon before that window, with about two and a half weeks to get things started before the pre-shadow opens. That is how the tradition reads it, and it gives the date a practical use.
§ 05Is there an eclipse at the January 2027 new moon?
No. The January 7 new moon has no eclipse, because the Moon passes the Sun too far from the lunar nodes for its disk to cross the Sun's. The eclipse season of early 2027 begins one lunar month later. The new moon of February 6, at 10:56 a.m. EST in Aquarius, is an annular solar eclipse, with greatest eclipse at about 15:59 UTC and the ring of sunlight crossing the Southern Hemisphere. It is not visible from New York or Los Angeles. The solar eclipse 2027 guide follows its path.
Two weeks after that comes the full moon of February 20 in Virgo, a penumbral lunar eclipse, the first of three in 2027. The lunar eclipse guide explains why the Moon only dims a little at a penumbral eclipse. Seen from the January new moon, the eclipses are one cycle ahead, which leaves this lunation as a quiet start to the year.
§ 06What does a new moon in Capricorn mean?
A new moon in Capricorn is read as a beginning that is meant to last. Capricorn is the sign of structure: work, career, long-term goals, responsibility and the rules and commitments that hold a life together. Astrologers connect it with plans that take patience, such as a project with a long timeline, a savings habit, a qualification, a change in how you organize your working week or a role you are ready to take on.
In the tradition Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of time, limits and steady effort. That is why a Capricorn new moon is read as practical. The mood leans toward lists, calendars and the next concrete step, and away from big gestures. Compared with the Sagittarius new moon a month earlier, which tradition reads as wide and searching, this one is read as narrowing the focus to what can be built.
Falling a week after New Year, the January new moon also meets a calendar habit many people already have. By January 7 the first week of resolutions has passed. Astrologers suggest the new moon as a second, quieter start: a moment to keep the one resolution that matters and shape it into a plan you can follow.
The astronomy is simple. The Sun is in Capricorn, and the Moon passes in front of it at 17°18' of the sign. Everything else here is interpretation.
§ 07How to use the days around January 7
- Pick one goal for the year and write it down in a sentence, with a date attached.
- Break it into the first three steps and take the first one in the week after the new moon.
- Set a check-in date. The full moon on January 22 is two weeks away and, in Leo, is read as a moment to show your work and ask for recognition.
- If your plans involve contracts, launches or important messages, put them on the calendar before February 9, when Mercury turns retrograde.
§ 08Where Capricorn sits in your chart
Look at your birth chart and find the house that holds Capricorn. This is the area of life the new moon lights up. A planet near 17 degrees of Capricorn makes the contact more personal, and so does a planet near the same degree in Aries, Cancer or Libra, the signs that stand square or opposite to it. If your Sun or your Moon is in Capricorn, this is the new moon of your own sign, which astrologers read as a personal new year. If you are unsure which signs matter in your chart, what your moon sign means is a short place to start.
§ 09Before and after
Behind this lunation is the December 2026 new moon in Sagittarius and the December 2026 full moon in Cancer, the last of 2026. Ahead is the January 2027 full moon in Leo, the Wolf Moon, followed by the February eclipses. The full moon 2027 calendar lists every new moon and full moon of the year, and Mercury retrograde 2027 covers the three retrograde windows. For every new moon through 2028, see the new moon calendar.
