Waxing Crescent Moon: What It Is, When You See It and What It Means

The waxing crescent moon is the thin, growing sliver you see in the evening sky in the days after a new moon. Less than half of its disk is lit, from a few percent at first up to just under 50%, and it runs from the new moon to first quarter, about a week later. In the US the lit edge is on the right, and the Moon hangs low in the western sky after sunset. Below you will find how to tell it from the waning crescent, the next new moons by our calculation and what astrologers read into the phase.
What the waxing crescent is
The Sun always lights half of the Moon, the half that faces it. What changes during a month is how much of that lit half we can see from Earth. Just after the new moon the Moon is almost between us and the Sun, so we look mostly at its dark side and catch only a narrow edge of the lit side. As the Moon moves along its orbit, that edge widens each night. The moon phase entry covers the geometry, and our phases of the Moon guide walks through all eight phases.
"Waxing" means growing, and "crescent" means less than half lit. The phase starts when the new moon ends, and it runs for about 7 days until the Moon is exactly half lit at first quarter. For the first day or so you will not see it, because the Moon sits too close to the Sun and sets almost with it.
When and where to see it
A waxing crescent follows the Sun down. You can see it only in the twilight after sunset, low in the west, and it sets within a few hours of the Sun. When it first shows, it is a thin line that sets soon after dusk. Each evening after that it is a little fatter, a little higher and up a little longer. By first quarter it stands high in the south at sunset and sets around midnight.
The unlit part of the disk is often faintly visible. That glow is earthshine, sunlight reflected from Earth onto the Moon, and it shows best in the first few evenings, when the crescent is thinnest and the sky is still dim. Binoculars and a clear western horizon help.
Waxing crescent vs waning crescent
The two crescents are mirror images, and two checks separate them. The first is the lit side. From the Northern Hemisphere a waxing crescent is lit on the right and a waning crescent on the left. In the Southern Hemisphere it is the other way around, because you see the Moon upside down compared with the north.
The second is the time of day, and it works in both hemispheres. A waxing crescent is an evening Moon in the west after sunset, growing toward first quarter. A waning crescent is a morning Moon, rising in the east shortly before the Sun and thinning toward the new moon. Our waning crescent moon page covers that side of the cycle.
The next waxing crescents
Each waxing crescent starts at a new moon. By our calculation the new moon on October 10, 2026 fell at 15:50 UTC, which was 11:50 a.m. EDT in New York, so as of October 11 the Moon has just entered its waxing crescent phase. Expect a thin crescent low in the evening sky over the following days, with first quarter roughly a week after the new moon.
| New moon | UTC | New York time |
|---|---|---|
| October 10, 2026 | 15:50 | 11:50 a.m. EDT |
| November 9, 2026 | 07:02 | 2:02 a.m. EST |
| December 9, 2026 | 00:52 | 7:52 p.m. EST on December 8 |
| January 7, 2027 | 20:24 | 3:24 p.m. EST |
| February 6, 2027 | 15:56 | 10:56 a.m. EST |
Each phase starts at the time shown, though the Moon usually becomes visible only on the second evening. The February 6, 2027 new moon is also a solar eclipse, and the solar eclipse 2027 guide has the details. First quarter is not in our tables. The lunar calendar gives the day a crescent becomes a half moon and moonset for your own city.
Next in the cycle
After the waxing crescent comes first quarter, then the waxing gibbous moon, when more than half of the disk is lit. Eclipses happen at the new moon that starts this phase (a solar eclipse) and at the full moon further on (a lunar eclipse). The dates of the next lunar ones are in our lunar eclipse guide.
What the waxing crescent means in astrology
Astrology reads the lunar cycle as a story of growth and release, and the waxing crescent is its first step. The new moon plants an intention, and tradition sees the crescent as the point where it starts to move and meets its first resistance. Astrologers who follow Dane Rudhyar's eight-phase model of the lunation cycle call this the crescent phase, a time of effort against the old habits and doubts that hold a new plan back.
In practice that reads as a modest invitation: take a small first step on whatever you started at the new moon, and keep going when it feels slow. The Moon's light does not affect your plans. This is a way of reading time that some people find useful, and it stands apart from the astronomy above. To see which zodiac sign the Moon is in during the phase, the moon sign tool shows its position for any date.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- How much of the waxing crescent moon is lit?
- Less than half of the disk: from a few percent just after the new moon up to just under 50% when it reaches first quarter. The lit part grows a little every evening.
- Which side is lit on a waxing crescent?
- From the Northern Hemisphere, including the US, the right side is lit. In the Southern Hemisphere the same phase is lit on the left. A waning crescent is lit on the opposite side in both.
- Is a waxing crescent a good time to see the Moon?
- Yes. It stands in the western sky after sunset, so you do not need to stay up late. Look for the faint glow on the dark part of the disk, called earthshine, a day or two after the new moon.
