New Moon December 2026: Dec 8 in Sagittarius

The Moon lines up with the Sun at 00:52 UTC on December 9. That makes it the evening of December 8 across the Americas: 7:52 p.m. Eastern, 6:52 p.m. Central, 5:52 p.m. Mountain and 4:52 p.m. Pacific. Anyone in Europe is already into Wednesday, at 1:52 a.m. CET. If you want a "new moon date" for a journal or a ritual, both dates are correct. Use the one on your own calendar.

The Moon is invisible at this point. A first thin crescent appears low in the western sky after sunset a day or two later. The lunar calendar shows the phase and the sun and moon times at your location.

No. Mercury is direct at the December 2026 new moon and moving forward at normal speed. The previous new moon, on November 9 in Scorpio, fell inside the retrograde. Mercury stationed direct on November 13 and cleared its post-shadow on November 30, so by December 9 it has been moving forward for almost four weeks. You can read more about the whole window in our Mercury retrograde October 2026 guide.

For people who hold off on signatures, launches and big messages during a retrograde, this is the first clean new moon after the pause. Tradition treats it as a good moment to start the things that waited. That is a reading, not a rule, but it gives the date a practical use.

A new moon in Sagittarius is read as a beginning with a wide horizon. Sagittarius is the sign of distance: long trips, study, teaching, belief and the larger picture. Astrologers connect it with plans that need room to grow, such as a trip, a course, a move or a change of direction at work. Compared with the Scorpio new moon a month earlier, the mood in the tradition is lighter and more outward-looking.

The astronomy is simple. The Sun is in Sagittarius, and the Moon passes in front of it. Everything else here is interpretation.

• Pick one direction for the next six months and write it down in a sentence.
• Take one concrete step in the week after the new moon, like booking the course or the ticket.
• Set a check-in date. The full moon on December 24 is two weeks away and, in Cancer, is read as a moment to turn toward home and people.
• If the holidays are coming, put the dates for travel and time off on the calendar now.

Look at your birth chart and find the house that holds Sagittarius. This is the area of life the new moon lights up. A planet in Sagittarius, or one at the same degree in another sign, adds weight. If you are unsure which signs matter in your chart, what your moon sign means is a short place to start.

Behind this lunation is the November 2026 full moon in Gemini. Ahead is the December 2026 full moon in Cancer, the last of the year, and the full moon 2026 calendar lists every date. For the other planets in motion, see retrograde planets in 2026.
