Mercury retrograde 2027 comes in three windows: February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, and October 7 to October 28. They last 22, 24 and 21 days, and Mercury is direct for the rest of the year. Mercury retrograde 2027 at a glance

Each window has a station retrograde, the day Mercury appears to stop and turn backward, and a station direct, the day it turns forward again. Astrologers also count a pre-shadow before the first station and a post-shadow after the second, when Mercury covers ground it will cross again. The shadow dates below are whole days.

The hours are US Eastern. New York is on standard time in the first window, on daylight time in the second (clocks change on March 14), and on daylight time in the third until November 7. Elsewhere the same instant falls a few hours earlier or later on the clock, and for some zones that can move it to the next calendar day, so check the tracker in your own zone if the exact hour matters. The positions are the sign and degree Mercury occupies at each station. Because the planet moves backward, the direct position always lies earlier in the zodiac than the retrograde one.

In total Mercury spends 67 days of the year retrograde. The shadows add more time on either side, so astrologers treat each window as a gentle slope with no hard edge.

Window 1: February 9 to March 3 (Pisces into Aquarius)

The first retrograde of 2027 opens in Pisces at 5°58' and ends in Aquarius at 20°55'. Mercury stations retrograde on February 9 at 12:36 pm, and the pre-shadow opens on January 25. It turns direct on March 3 at 7:33 am and leaves the post-shadow on March 23.

For 22 days Mercury appears to slide backward from Pisces into Aquarius, because it passes between Earth and the Sun. The full moon of February 20, in Virgo at 2°05', falls inside the retrograde and is a lunar eclipse, covered in the full moon 2027 calendar.

Tradition reads Mercury in Pisces as a mind that works through impressions. Mercury is said to be at a disadvantage in the sign, since the planet of precise language sits in the sign of the dissolving edge, so astrologers expect wording to blur and details to slip. They read a retrograde through Pisces and then Aquarius as a move from feeling toward systems: first the unspoken things come up for review, then the group, the network and the plan. Many astrologers suggest rereading the messages that matter before you send them, and keeping a written note of what was agreed.

Window 2: June 10 to July 4 (Cancer into Gemini)

The second window opens in Cancer at 6°21' and ends in Gemini at 27°28'. Mercury stations retrograde on June 10 at 2:16 pm and direct on July 4 at 3:39 pm. The pre-shadow opens on May 26 and the post-shadow closes on July 19. At 24 days it is the longest of the three.

Mercury starts this retrograde in Cancer and backs into Gemini, the sign it traditionally rules, so the window ends in Mercury's home sign. Astrologers read Mercury in Cancer as thought tied to memory and home, and the backward motion as a return to old conversations, family messages and places you used to know. In Gemini the same planet is seen as quick and talkative, so a retrograde there is a chance to finish the writing, studying and correspondence you started earlier.

The window falls in the middle of the year, when many people are traveling. Tradition reads Mercury as the planet of journeys as well as messages, so the usual advice is the practical one: confirm bookings, keep copies of documents, and leave a little extra time between connections.

Window 3: October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio into Libra)

The third window is the shortest, at 21 days. Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio at 4°55' on October 7 at 10:37 am, with the pre-shadow having opened on September 17. It turns direct in Libra at 19°18' on October 28 at 10:11 am, and the post-shadow ends on November 13.

Mercury in Scorpio is read as an investigating mind, one that wants the thing underneath the thing. A retrograde there is read as a review of private matters: money held jointly, old agreements, what was left unsaid. When Mercury backs into Libra, the reading turns to negotiation, fairness and the balance of an arrangement. The usual advice for Mercury in these signs is to settle terms in writing and check that both sides mean the same thing by the same words.
