What a full moon is

A full moon happens when the Sun and the Moon sit on opposite sides of Earth. The half of the Moon that faces us is then fully lit, and it shows as a round disk all night. Two weeks later the geometry flips: at the new moon the Moon passes between Earth and Sun with its lit side turned away, and it drops out of sight.

From one full moon to the next takes about 29.5 days on average, a span astronomers call the synodic month. Because that is a little shorter than most calendar months, the full moon creeps earlier in the month as the year goes on, and a year collects either twelve or thirteen of them. 2027 gets exactly twelve, one in each calendar month.

Most full moons are not eclipses. The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against Earth's, so the full Moon usually passes just above or below Earth's shadow. Only when a full moon happens close to one of the two points where the orbits cross does the Moon move into that shadow, and the full moon becomes a lunar eclipse. That tilt is why eclipses come a few times a year instead of every month.

The phases in brief

Between two full moons the Moon runs the same loop. After the new moon comes the waxing crescent, then the first quarter with half the disk lit, then the waxing gibbous up to full. From there the light shrinks again through the waning gibbous, the last quarter and the waning crescent, back to new. These eight moon phases are plain geometry of Sun, Earth and Moon.

Tradition lays a direction over that geometry. The waxing half is read as a time for building, when something takes shape. The waning half is read as a time for sorting and letting go. The full moon is the bright turning point between them, and the new moon the quiet start. Read that way, the phases work as a small calendar of attention that follows the light in the sky.

All times are US Eastern: EST until March 14, then EDT until November 7, when clocks fall back. They come from the same engine as the lunar calendar, so the two match to the minute.

There is no blue moon in 2027, since no calendar month holds two full moons. There is a repeat all the same: the April and May full moons both fall in Scorpio, the first at the very start of the sign and the second on its last degree, so the full Moon crosses the same sign twice in two different months. Three of the twelve are also lunar eclipses, all of the faint penumbral kind described below.

Five of these dates read one day later on European calendars: February 21, April 21, June 19, September 16 and November 14. Nothing differs in the sky. The same instant falls after midnight in Europe while it is still evening in New York, and for June and November it is already the next day in UTC as well. Full moon month by month

Full moon in January 2027 falls on January 22 in Leo, the sign of self-expression and warmth, and is the first of the year.

Full moon in February 2027 is the first eclipse of the year, on February 20 in Virgo, the sign of order and daily work.

Full moon in March 2027 lands on March 22 in Libra and brings relationships and fairness to the front.

Full moon in April 2027 falls on April 20 in Scorpio, at the start of the sign, and asks about depth and trust.

Full moon in June 2027 comes on the evening of June 18 in Sagittarius, the sign of meaning and conviction.

Full moon in July 2027 is the lunar eclipse of July 18 in Capricorn, the sign of goals and responsibility.

Full moon in August 2027 is another lunar eclipse, on August 17 in Aquarius, the sign of community and ideas.

Full moon in September 2027 falls on September 15 in Pisces, the sign of retreat and compassion.

New moon 2027: every date

Each full moon has a partner new moon about two weeks away, the starting point of the cycle. 2027 has thirteen of them, because August gets two. Times are again US Eastern.

The February 6 and August 2 new moons are themselves solar eclipses, the counterpart to the three lunar eclipses in the full moon table. The eclipses of 2027

Five eclipses fall in two clusters. An eclipse is a new or full moon that also sits close to a lunar node, one of the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's apparent path. Only then do Sun, Earth and Moon line up closely enough for a shadow to land, which is why eclipses arrive in pairs or small groups about two weeks apart. By our calculation, the five are:

• Annular solar eclipse on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at the new moon in Aquarius (10:56 a.m. EST).
• Penumbral lunar eclipse on Saturday, February 20, 2027, at the full moon in Virgo (6:24 p.m. EST).
• Penumbral lunar eclipse on Sunday, July 18, 2027, at the full moon in Capricorn (11:45 a.m. EDT).
• Total solar eclipse on Monday, August 2, 2027, at the new moon in Leo (6:05 a.m. EDT).
• Penumbral lunar eclipse on Tuesday, August 17, 2027, at the full moon in Aquarius (3:29 a.m. EDT).

The times are those of the new or full moon itself; the moment of greatest eclipse falls within about twenty minutes of each. February holds the first pair, the solar eclipse on the 6th and the lunar eclipse on the 20th. Summer then brings three in quick succession: the lunar eclipse of July 18, the solar eclipse of August 2 and, two weeks later, the lunar eclipse of August 17.

None of the three lunar eclipses is a blood moon. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon only passes through the pale outer part of Earth's shadow, dims a little and keeps its usual color. Here is what our calculation shows for New York and Los Angeles. On February 20 the Moon rises in New York while the eclipse is under way and is above the horizon at its peak, while in Los Angeles it stays below the horizon for all of it. On July 18 the Moon is below the horizon in both cities, and that eclipse is so shallow it is practically invisible anywhere. On August 17 the Moon is up in both cities for the whole eclipse, in the early hours in New York. Neither solar eclipse is visible from New York or Los Angeles.

The August 2 totality crosses southern Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Arabia instead, and solar eclipse 2027 goes through the path, the length of totality and what each city sees. The black moon of August 2027

August 2027 holds two new moons, on August 2 and August 31, and the second is popularly called a black moon. The label is modern folklore, and the reason behind it is arithmetic: the lunar cycle of about 29.5 days is shorter than a 31-day month, so now and then a second new moon fits in at the end. A black moon is the counterpart of a blue moon, the second full moon in a calendar month. Both are calendar curiosities with no astronomical weight of their own, and on the night itself the Moon looks like it does at any other new moon, which is to say you cannot see it. 2027 has no blue moon and this one black moon.

Traditional full moon names

You have probably come across names like Wolf Moon, Harvest Moon or Strawberry Moon. They come from old farming and folk calendars, were popularized in the US by farmers' almanacs, and pin an image from nature to each month. A common modern list runs Wolf Moon for January, Snow Moon for February, Worm Moon for March, Pink Moon for April, Flower Moon for May, Strawberry Moon for June, Buck Moon for July, Sturgeon Moon for August, Harvest or Corn Moon for September, Hunter's Moon for October, Beaver Moon for November and Cold Moon for December. What the full moon means

In astrology the Moon stands for feeling and instinct. At the full moon it sits opposite the Sun, the light of will and purpose, and the tradition reads that face-off as a peak. What began as an intention at the new moon two weeks earlier now comes into view, ripens or asks for a decision. That is why the full moon is read as a time for harvest and release, and less as a time for fresh starts.
