Full Moon May 2027: the Flower Moon in Scorpio

The May 2027 full moon is exact on Thursday, May 20, at 6:59 a.m. EDT (10:59 UTC). That is 3:59 a.m. on the Pacific coast, 12:59 p.m. in Paris and Berlin, and 1:59 p.m. in Sofia and Istanbul. The date is May 20 almost everywhere. In the US the Moon has already set or is close to the horizon at that hour, so the evening of Wednesday, May 19, is the best time to look.

The new moon that opened this cycle falls on May 6, at 6:59 a.m. EDT in Taurus. The lunar calendar gives the hour for your own town.

In the North American almanac list the May full moon is the Flower Moon, named for the spring bloom. Like the other monthly names it is a seasonal label from folk calendars, and the Moon itself looks no different from any other month's.

No. May 2027 has one full moon, on May 20, since a full moon comes about every 29.5 days and 2027 fits twelve of them, one per calendar month. May 2026 had two, and the second was a blue moon. What repeats instead is the sign: April's full moon stood at the first degree of Scorpio, and this one stands at the last. The Moon crosses the same sign twice in two months, once at each end.

The Moon stands at about 29 degrees of Scorpio in the tropical zodiac, opposite the Sun at about 29 degrees of Taurus. Pluto turns retrograde on May 8 in Aquarius, twelve days before this full moon, and stays retrograde until October 18.

Astrologers read Scorpio as the sign of depth, intimacy, shared money and the urge to get to the bottom of things, and Taurus, holding the Sun, as comfort, steadiness and what you own. The 29th degree is sometimes called the critical or anaretic degree, the last one of a sign, and tradition reads a planet there as a theme that is finishing. In that reading this full moon closes what the April full moon opened: trust, shared resources, something you have kept below the surface. Pluto retrograde in the background is read as a slow review of power, control and what you are ready to let go of.

The Flower Moon falls in whichever house holds 29 degrees of Scorpio in your birth chart. That house is the area of life this full moon closes out, and the house across from it, holding the last degrees of Taurus, shows what balanced it. Planets near those degrees, or near the end of Leo and Aquarius, get the closest contact. What your moon sign means adds the emotional layer from your own natal Moon.

May 2026 had two full moons. The first was exact on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:23 p.m. EDT (17:23 UTC), with the Moon in Scorpio. The second was on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 4:45 a.m. EDT (08:45 UTC), in Sagittarius, and it was the blue moon of that year. The full moon 2026 calendar lists both.

The next new moon falls on June 4 at 3:40 p.m. EDT in Gemini. The next full moon is the June 2027 full moon, the Strawberry Moon in Sagittarius, on the evening of June 18 in Eastern time. The cycle between new and full is explained step by step in the moon phases guide.
