§ 01What happens at the July 2027 lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse happens when a full moon falls near a lunar node, one of the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the Sun's path. The July 2027 lunar eclipse is barely there. The Moon touches only the outer fringe of Earth's shadow, the penumbra. By the site's eclipse calculation the shadow covers about 3 percent of the Moon's diameter at the peak, and the whole event lasts about 51 minutes, from 11:37 a.m. to 12:28 p.m. EDT, with the greatest eclipse at 12:02 p.m.
At that hour the Moon is below the horizon in New York, Los Angeles and every city on our European and Turkish list, so there is nothing to watch, and even from a place where the Moon is up, a shading this slight is close to invisible. The eclipse is worth knowing about mainly because it is the second of three penumbral lunar eclipses in 2027 and sits between two solar eclipses, the annular one of February 6 and the total one of August 2.
§ 02Why does the summer full moon look low and warm?
A summer full moon stays low. It sits opposite the Sun, and since the summer Sun climbs high, the full Moon takes the low road across the southern sky. Near the horizon it often looks amber, because you see it through more air, and many people find it looks bigger there too. That is the Moon illusion, a trick of perception: the Moon's real size and distance do not change. To catch the July Moon, look east around sunset on Saturday the 17th or Sunday the 18th. The lunar calendar gives the rise time for your own town.
§ 03What is the Buck Moon?
In the North American almanac list the July full moon is the Buck Moon, usually explained by male deer growing their new antlers at this time of year. It appears on many calendars, but it is folk custom. The Moon of July 18 is an ordinary full moon in every astronomical sense apart from the faint shadow.
§ 04Astronomy first, then the reading
The measured facts: the Moon is at about 25 and three-quarter degrees of Capricorn in the tropical zodiac, in exact opposition to the Sun at the same degree of Cancer. Mercury turned direct on July 4 after its retrograde through Cancer, and Neptune stationed retrograde on July 9 in Aries, until December 15. Pluto is retrograde in Aquarius until October 18.
Astrology layers its own meaning on top. Capricorn is read as the sign of career, structure and the long climb toward a goal, and Cancer, home of the Sun, as family, home and emotional safety. A Capricorn full moon is traditionally read as the familiar tug between public duty and private life, and as a moment to ask which one has been running the show. Because the eclipse is so faint, astrologers treat it as an ordinary full moon with a slight emphasis. The Mercury retrograde ended two weeks earlier, which makes this a natural point to look at what survived the review.
§ 05Where does the Buck Moon fall in your chart?
The Buck Moon stands at about 25 and three-quarter degrees of Capricorn. Find that degree in your birth chart. The house it occupies is the area of life brought to light, and the house holding the same degree of Cancer shows what pulls the other way. Planets near those degrees, or near the end of Aries and Libra, get the closest contact. The cycle it closes began at the new moon of July 3 in Cancer.
§ 06Last year's July full moon
The July 2026 full moon was exact on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 10:36 a.m. EDT (14:36 UTC), with the Moon in Aquarius. The full moon 2026 calendar lists it with the rest of that year.
§ 07What comes after the Buck Moon
The next new moon is on August 2 at 6:05 a.m. EDT in Leo, and it is a total solar eclipse. Two weeks after it comes the August 2027 full moon, a penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius that New York and Los Angeles can see. The previous full moon was the June 2027 full moon in Sagittarius. For all dates and eclipses of the year, see the full moon 2027 calendar.
