The chart
Zodiac
The zodiac is the band of twelve signs, Aries through Pisces, that circles the sky along the Sun's yearly path. Each sign spans exactly 30 degrees of the 360-degree circle, so the Sun, Moon and planets always fall in one sign or another as they move. The signs give a shared language for where a planet sits and what that placement colors.

"Zodiac" comes from a Greek phrase for a circle of little animals, and that circle is the reference frame the whole practice is built on. Picture a belt wrapped around the sky, split into twelve equal slices of thirty degrees. The Sun, Moon and planets all travel along the middle of that belt, so any position can be named as a sign and a degree, like 14 degrees of Taurus.
How the twelve signs are laid out
The signs run in a fixed order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. Each owns thirty degrees, and twelve times thirty makes the full 360 of the circle. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which pins zero degrees of Aries to the point where the Sun crosses the equator at the March equinox. Because of that anchor, the signs track the seasons rather than the star patterns behind them.
Signs are not the constellations
The constellations of Aries, Taurus and the rest still sit in the sky, but they no longer line up with the signs of the same name. The Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, a motion called precession that drifts the equinox point about one degree every seventy-two years. Over two thousand years that gap has grown by roughly a full sign. The tropical zodiac ignores the drift and stays tied to the seasons; the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology keeps step with the constellations instead.
A planet's sign as its style
Traditionally the sign a planet sits in describes the style of that planet. The same Mars reads as blunt and quick in Aries and as patient and stubborn in Taurus. Signs are sorted into four elements and three modalities, and those groupings are a fast way to read the overall flavor of a chart.
The March equinox: where Pisces ends and Aries begins
Every year the Sun enters Aries at the March equinox. In 2026 that crossing fell on 20 March, so a birthday on 19 March is the tail of Pisces and one on 21 March is early Aries. Anyone born within a few hours of the boundary needs an exact birth time to settle which sign the Sun was in.
Signs versus constellations and houses
The biggest is treating the signs as the visible constellations, a link precession broke long ago. People also confuse signs with houses, since both come in twelves. Signs are fixed bands of the zodiac, while houses are pinned to your birth time and place.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are the 12 zodiac signs in order?
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. They run in that fixed order, each owning thirty degrees of the circle.
Do the zodiac signs match the constellations?
No longer. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the equinox, and precession has slid the constellations about a full sign away from the signs that share their names.
How many degrees is each zodiac sign?
Thirty. Twelve signs of thirty degrees each add up to the 360 degrees of the full circle, so a planet's place is always given as a sign and a degree within it.
