The chart

House

A house is one of twelve divisions of the chart, each standing for an area of life, from the self, money and home to partnership, work and the public eye. A sign sets the style and a planet brings the force; the house is the room where that plays out. A planet's house says where its energy shows up day to day. The houses begin at the ascendant and depend on an exact birth time.

A house is one of twelve wedges a birth chart is cut into, and each wedge stands for a part of ordinary life: your body and how you start things, your money and belongings, your home, your close partnerships, your work and public standing, and so on around the circle. Where a sign describes a style of energy, a house describes the setting that energy shows up in. The same planet reads differently depending on which house it lands in, because the house is the arena.

How the houses are worked out

The houses are anchored to the moment and place of birth, which is why an exact birth time matters. At that instant the eastern horizon meets the zodiac at one specific degree; that degree is the ascendant, and it becomes the start of the first house. From there a house system divides the rest of the circle into twelve. Some systems, such as whole sign, give each house a full thirty-degree sign; others, such as Placidus and Koch, split the sky by how long points take to rise, so the houses come out unequal. All of them depend on the birth time and the observer's latitude, so a chart drawn for noon and one drawn for midnight place the same planets in different houses.

Twelve domains, from the self to career

Astrologers traditionally give each house a domain. The first house is the self and first impressions, the second money and values, the fourth home and roots, the seventh one-to-one partnership, the tenth career and reputation. A planet sitting in a house is read as coloring that domain, and the sign on the house cusp is taken to describe the approach. A house holding several planets is treated as a part of life that carries extra weight.

An example: a planet in the tenth

Say Venus falls in the tenth house. Venus is read as a planet of relating and taste, and the tenth is the house of career and public role, so an astrologer might read the pairing as someone whose work involves people, appearance or the arts. Move the same Venus to the fourth house and the reading turns toward home and family life, because the house it sits in sets the context.

Houses versus signs, and why systems disagree

Houses and signs are easy to conflate, since both come in twelves. They are different things: signs are fixed bands of the zodiac, while houses are pinned to your birth time and place. The house layout itself is not agreed on either, because house systems divide the sky differently, so a planet near a cusp can sit in one house under Placidus and the next under whole sign. This is also why a rounded or missing birth time weakens any house reading. If another chart shows different houses, why your chart looks different elsewhere explains house systems and zodiac types. Your houses from a real calculation

NovaOracles builds your houses from a real chart calculation. The rising sign tool finds your ascendant and the house cusps that follow from it, the full birth chart tool places every planet in its house, and the rising sign guide walks through what the angles mean.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the 12 houses in astrology?

The twelve wedges a birth chart is divided into. Each covers an area of life such as money, home or career, and a planet's house shows the setting its energy plays out in.

What decides which house a planet is in?

Your exact birth time and place. They fix the ascendant, and the house cusps follow from it, so two people born a few hours apart can have the same planet in different houses.

Are all house systems the same?

No. Whole sign gives each house a full thirty-degree sign, while Placidus and Koch divide the sky unequally, so a planet near a cusp can change houses between systems.
