Scorpio rising means Scorpio was climbing over the eastern horizon when you were born, so your first house starts in Scorpio. Astrologers link it to a private, watchful first impression. By our calculation it rises for about two and a half hours in New York and nearly three in London, so your birth time decides it. Check yours with the rising sign calculator.

§ 01

Scorpio rising: first impression

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Fixed means it holds a position once it has formed one, and water means feeling runs below the surface. With Scorpio on the ascendant, people often meet someone composed, a little reserved, who listens first and speaks second. The gaze tends to stay steady. A conversation can feel like being read.

The reserve works as a threshold. Astrologers describe Scorpio rising as slow to open and loyal once trust exists. Strangers sometimes read that as mystery and sometimes as sternness. If the Sun or Moon sits in a lighter sign, the gap between the first impression and the person you get to know can be wide, which is one reason a chart reads better as a whole than by one placement.

In work and friendship the placement favors a few solid bonds over many casual ones. The traditional portrait is of someone who keeps what they are told, keeps their word and remembers a detail years later. It also costs energy: scanning a room all the time is tiring, so many Scorpio risings need a quiet evening after a crowded day. For the sign in general, the Scorpio profile covers the Sun-sign side.

§ 02

When does Scorpio rise?

Scorpio is one of the longest-rising signs at northern latitudes. By our calculation, the window lasts 169 to 170 minutes in London, 152 to 153 in New York and 145 to 146 in Los Angeles, and it barely changes through the year. What moves is the clock time: the window starts about four minutes earlier each day and works its way around the full 24 hours over twelve months.

Date (2026) London New York Los Angeles
20 March 20:58-23:48 21:34-00:07 21:22-23:47
21 June 15:53-18:42 15:28-18:01 15:16-17:41
23 September 09:43-12:33 09:19-11:51 09:07-11:32
21 December 02:53-05:43 02:29-05:01 02:17-04:42

All times are local clock times, 24-hour format, with daylight saving time applied where it is in force that day. Around the March equinox the New York window runs past midnight: it opens at 9:34 p.m. and closes at 12:07 a.m. A baby born at 11:30 p.m. on 20 March in New York has Scorpio rising. In late December the same sign climbs before dawn, from 2:29 to 5:01 a.m. In June you need an afternoon birth.

London's window is about 17 minutes longer than New York's, and Los Angeles runs shorter than both. The table shows one day per season, so a birth between those dates needs its own date, which the calculator handles. If you were born near an edge of the window, check your birth time on the certificate before trusting the result.

§ 03

Who rules Scorpio rising?

Scorpio has two rulers. Traditional astrology names Mars, and modern astrology adds Pluto or puts it first. With Scorpio rising it is worth looking at both, because they answer different questions.

Mars describes how you act: how you start things, how you get angry, what you defend. The sign and house of your own Mars show how determined the placement is under a reserved surface, and you can find yours in the Mars sign tool. Pluto moves slowly. Its sign describes a generation, and its house points at the area of life where you meet renewal and change.

Opposite Scorpio, Taurus sets on the western horizon, so the seventh house starts in Taurus. Tradition reads that as a search for steadiness, loyalty and something you can rely on in close relationships. The intensity of the rising sign and the calm Taurus ground on the other side tend to balance each other. The house entry explains what each of the twelve houses covers.

§ 04

Do you have Scorpio rising?

Enter birth date, exact time and place into the rising sign calculator and it gives the ascendant to the degree. If you were born in the middle of the Scorpio window the result is stable. Near the edges, the neighbor can show up: Libra before it, Sagittarius after it. Births close to midnight deserve a second look at the date on the certificate, since the window can cross the day line.

The ascendant says little alone. The Moon adds the emotional side, covered in what your Moon sign means, and the rising sign guide shows how the Sun, Moon and rising sign work together. For appearance and how each ascendant tends to look, read rising sign and your appearance, and for the basics see your rising sign explained. All twelve signs side by side are in the rising sign table, and the whole chart is in the birth chart tool.
