Aries Rising: Traits, Rising Times and Ruler Mars

Aries is a cardinal fire sign. Cardinal means it starts things, and fire means the energy shows on the surface. With Aries on the ascendant, people often meet someone who moves quickly, speaks plainly and looks you in the eye. Handshakes come early, small talk comes short and the first question is usually a real one.

That directness reads as confidence, and sometimes as impatience. Astrologers describe Aries rising as quick to react and just as quick to let a quarrel go. Strangers tend to experience warmth and bluntness at the same moment. If the Sun or Moon sits in a slower sign, such as Taurus or Capricorn, the first impression runs ahead of the person, which is one reason a chart reads better as a whole than by one placement.

At work and with friends the placement favors starting over finishing. The traditional portrait is of someone who volunteers first, tries the new thing first and needs a good reason to wait. The cost is stamina on long projects, so many Aries risings do best with short sprints and a visible finish line. For the sign in general, the Aries profile covers the Sun-sign side.

Aries rises at a different clock time each day, cycling through all 24 hours over twelve months. Its window barely changes through the year, lasting 52 to 53 minutes in London, 71 to 72 in New York and 79 to 80 in Los Angeles, by our calculation. Aries is one of the shortest-rising signs, especially at northern latitudes.

All times are local clock times, 24-hour format, with daylight saving time applied where it is in force that day. Around the March equinox Aries rises at dawn, close to sunrise, which is why people born at first light often have the Sun and the ascendant in the same sign. A baby born at 7:30 a.m. on 20 March in New York has Aries rising. In late June you need a birth in the small hours, from 12:59 to 2:10 a.m. in New York. In September the window sits in the early evening.

London's window is about 19 minutes shorter than New York's, and Los Angeles runs longer than both. The table shows one day per season, so a birth between those dates needs its own date, which the calculator handles. With a window this short, check your birth time on the certificate before trusting the result: ten minutes can change the sign.

Mars rules Aries rising, in both traditional and modern astrology. Aries has no second ruler, so the question stays simple: where is your Mars? Mars describes how you act, how you start things, how you get angry and what you defend.

The sign and house of your own Mars show whether the quick Aries style feels natural or has to be learned. Mars in a patient sign can soften the first impression, and Mars in a fast one doubles it. You can find yours in the Mars sign tool. Mars is also the planet to read when you wonder why you feel restless in the same part of life again and again.

Opposite Aries, Libra sets on the western horizon, so the seventh house starts in Libra. Tradition reads that as a search for balance, fairness and a partner who slows the pace. The quick rising sign and the diplomatic one on the other side tend to balance each other. The house entry explains what each of the twelve houses covers.

Enter your birth date, exact time and place into the rising sign calculator to get your ascendant to the degree. Because the window is so short, results near the edges can flip to the neighboring sign, Pisces before Aries or Taurus after it. A second look at the certificate is worth it, along with the date for births close to midnight.

The ascendant says little alone. The Moon adds the emotional side, covered in what your Moon sign means, and the rising sign guide shows how the Sun, Moon and rising sign work together. All twelve signs side by side are in the rising sign table, and the whole chart is in the birth chart tool.
