Leo Rising: Traits, Rising Times and Ruler the Sun
NovaOracles · ·

Leo rising means Leo was crossing the eastern horizon when you were born, so your first house starts in Leo, and astrologers tie that to a warm, confident first impression. By our calculation, Leo rises for about two and a half hours in New York and nearly three in London. Find out your own ascendant in the rising sign calculator.
§ 01Leo rising: first impression
Leo is a fixed fire sign. Fixed means it holds a position once it has formed one, and fire means the energy is visible. With Leo on the ascendant, people often meet someone with a straight back, an open face and a laugh that carries. The hair, the clothes or the voice usually say something on the person's behalf.
That presence reads as generosity, and sometimes as a wish to be the center. Astrologers describe Leo rising as loyal, proud and quick to notice whether it is being appreciated. Strangers see the performance first and the care for others later. If the Sun or Moon sits in a quieter sign such as Virgo or Pisces, the person behind the entrance can be much more modest than it suggests, which is one reason a chart reads better as a whole than by one placement.
In work and friendship the placement favors leading by example and giving credit out loud. The traditional portrait is of someone who throws the party, remembers to toast the quiet colleague and takes criticism in public hard. It also costs energy: keeping the mood of a group high is a job, so many Leo risings need honest praise in return. For the sign in general, the Leo profile covers the Sun-sign side.
§ 02When does Leo rise?
Leo is one of the longest-rising signs at northern latitudes. By our calculation the window lasts 169 to 170 minutes in London, 152 to 153 in New York and 145 to 146 in Los Angeles, and it barely changes through the year. What moves is the clock time: the window starts about four minutes earlier each day and works its way around the full 24 hours over twelve months.
| Date (2026) | London | New York | Los Angeles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 March | 12:28-15:18 | 13:59-16:31 | 14:11-16:36 |
| 21 June | 07:22-10:12 | 07:53-10:25 | 08:05-10:31 |
| 23 September | 01:12-04:02 | 01:43-04:16 | 01:56-04:21 |
| 21 December | 18:18-21:08 | 18:49-21:22 | 19:02-21:27 |
All times are local clock times, 24-hour format, with daylight saving time applied where it is in force that day. A baby born at 3 p.m. on 20 March in New York has Leo rising. In late September the same sign climbs in the middle of the night, from 1:43 to 4:16 a.m. In June you need a morning birth, between 7:53 and 10:25 a.m. in New York.
London's window is about 17 minutes longer than New York's, and Los Angeles runs shorter than both. The table shows one day per season, so a birth between those dates needs its own date, which the calculator handles. If you were born near an edge of the window, check your birth time on the certificate before trusting the result.
§ 03Who rules Leo rising?
Leo rising is ruled by the Sun in both traditional and modern astrology, since Leo has no second ruler. The Sun is the one ruler that is a star, and it describes identity, vitality and where you want to be seen.
The sign and house of your own Sun show how the Leo warmth is directed. A Sun in a modest sign can make the person quieter than the rising sign promises, while a Sun in a fire sign adds more of the same. You can see the Sun together with the Moon and the rising sign in the big three tool. People born around sunrise in August have the Sun and the ascendant in the same sign, and for them the entrance and the person match.
Opposite Leo, Aquarius sets on the western horizon, so the seventh house starts in Aquarius. Tradition reads that as a pull toward partners who are independent, a little unconventional and comfortable with their own circle. The spotlight of the rising sign and the cool distance on the other side tend to balance each other. The house entry explains what each of the twelve houses covers.
§ 04Do you have Leo rising?
You have Leo rising if Leo was on the eastern horizon at your birth, and the rising sign calculator gives your ascendant to the degree once you enter your birth date, exact time and place. If you were born in the middle of the Leo window the result is stable. Near the edges, the neighbor can show up: Cancer before it, Virgo after it. Births close to midnight deserve a second look at the date on the certificate, since the window can cross the day line.
The ascendant says little alone. The Moon adds the emotional side, covered in what your Moon sign means, and the rising sign guide shows how the Sun, Moon and rising sign work together. All twelve signs side by side are in the rising sign table, and the whole chart is in the birth chart tool.
