Solar return chart calculator: your year ahead
NovaOracles' free solar return calculator finds the exact moment of your solar return, casts the chart with houses for the city where you spend your birthday and adds a short reading of the year, with no sign-up. A solar return chart is cast for the moment each year when the Sun comes back to the exact degree it held at your birth, within a day of your birthday. Astrologers read it as a picture of the year ahead.
Your solar return
Once a year the Sun comes back to the degree it held when you were born. The chart for that moment is your solar return.
The record
Enter your birth date, time and place, then press the button. The return moment and its chart appear here.
This solar return chart calculator finds the minute the Sun returns to its birth position in the year you choose and casts the chart for it, at your birthplace or wherever you will spend your birthday. For example, for a birth on June 15, 1990 at 1:30 p.m. in London, the 2026 return falls on June 15, 2026 at 6:23 a.m. local daylight saving time. With Placidus houses, the chart cast for London has Cancer rising at 14°39′ and the Sun in the 12th house; cast for New York, where the clock reads 1:23 a.m., it has Aries rising at 0°43′ and the Sun in the 3rd house.

Calculated by NovaOracles with the same engine as the tool, for the local time and city shown.
Method: the Sun's apparent geocentric longitude from our own engine (VSOP87), tropical zodiac. The return is the instant the Sun's longitude equals its value at your birth, found to the second by bisection; the chart for that instant uses the same engine and, by default, Placidus houses (whole sign, Koch and equal houses are on the switch). Checked against NASA JPL Horizons to within a few seconds.

What is a solar return chart?
Every year the Sun travels once around the zodiac and comes back to the exact degree it held at your birth. That moment is your solar return, and the chart cast for it is read as a portrait of the year that runs until your next birthday. It is the same idea as the Saturn return, applied to the planet that sets the calendar.
The return chart is a full chart: Ascendant, Midheaven, houses and every planet, all for one minute. Your natal Sun sits at the same degree in it by definition; everything else is new, which is why astrologers read the return alongside your birth chart rather than instead of it.

Why does the return move around your birthday?
§ 02
Why does the return move around your birthday?
The Sun needs about 365.24 days to come back to the same degree, while the calendar has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year. So the return arrives roughly six hours later each year and jumps back after every February 29. It often falls on the birthday itself, but it can land on the day before or after, especially for people born near midnight.
That is also why a return has a time, not just a date. The year selector above shows last year's return, this year's and the next two, each to the minute.

§ 03
Where should you cast a solar return?
The planets have the same signs and degrees from anywhere on Earth, but the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses depend on where the chart is cast. The usual practice is to cast the return for the place where you are at the moment it happens, so the calculator starts with your birthplace and lets you choose any other city.
Moving the place shifts the angles and can carry planets into other houses. Some people choose where to spend a birthday for exactly this reason; the calculator shows what changes before you book anything. Because the return is cast for a single minute, moving the chosen place by even a few hundred kilometers can change the Ascendant by a degree or more, so compare the angles of every city you are weighing.

§ 04
How astrologers read a solar return
Tradition starts with the return Ascendant, read as the tone of the year and how you meet it, and with the house the Sun falls in, read as the area where the year's attention gathers. The Moon's sign and house describe what you will need to feel settled, and planets close to the angles are taken as the year's loudest themes.
A return is read for one year only. It is not a forecast of events: it shows which parts of the chart are emphasized, and how much weight to give that is yours to decide. For the day-to-day movement within the year, the transit chart shows today's planets against your birth chart.

How the return is computed
§ 05
How the return is computed
Your birth date, time and place are turned into Universal Time with the historical time zone rules of that place. Our engine computes the Sun's apparent geocentric longitude at that instant from the VSOP87 theory, corrected for light time, aberration and nutation, in the tropical zodiac. For the chosen year it then searches the days around your birthday and narrows the crossing down to the second. In our tests against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris, the return instants agree to within a few seconds; the accuracy page shows how the engine compares.
Everything is calculated in your browser. To show the first line of today's reading, your birth details are sent once to our server, which does not store them; only the place search sends the name you type to Photon, the OpenStreetMap geocoder. The calculator is free and needs no account.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a solar return chart?
It is the chart cast for the moment the Sun returns to the exact degree it held at your birth, once a year near your birthday. Astrologers read it as a picture of the year until your next birthday, alongside your birth chart.
Does my solar return fall on my birthday?
Within a day of it. The Sun takes about 365.24 days to return while the calendar counts 365 or 366, so the return moves by about six hours a year and can fall on the day before or after your birthday.
Do I need my birth time for a solar return?
For the chart, yes. An hour's error in the birth time moves the return by about an hour, which can change the Ascendant and houses. Without a time the calculator gives the day only and leaves the houses out.
Where should I cast my solar return chart?
The usual practice is the place where you are at the moment of the return. The calculator starts with your birthplace and lets you choose another city; the planets' signs stay the same, while the Ascendant and houses change.
How is the solar return moment calculated?
The calculator converts your birth time with the historical time zone of your birthplace and computes the exact degree the Sun held at that moment, in the tropical zodiac used across the site. For the year you choose, it then searches the days around your birthday for the moment the Sun returns to that degree.
How long does a solar return chart last?
One year, from one solar return to the next. Astrologers read the chart cast for the minute of your return as a picture of the twelve months until the following one, which falls within a day of your next birthday. In the London example above, the 2026 chart runs from June 15, 2026 at 6:23 a.m. to June 15, 2027 at 12:03 p.m.
How accurate is the solar return time?
The return is found to the second, and in our tests against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris the return instants agree to within a few seconds. The practical limit is the birth time you enter, because the return moves with it almost minute for minute. The calculator shows the result to the minute, in the time zone of the city you cast it for.
