Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces Explained · A. Cellarius · Harmonia Macrocosmica · 1661

The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Cancer covers June 21 to July 22, Scorpio covers October 23 to November 21, and Pisces covers February 19 to March 20 in the usual table, with the boundaries moving by a day in some years. In the tradition, water is the element of feeling, memory and the currents under the surface of a conversation. This page goes through the three signs in turn. The wider picture of all four elements is in the zodiac elements explained.

The three water signs at a glance

The water signs are spaced a hundred and twenty degrees apart, which is the angle of a trine. Their modality shapes how the water flows.

Sign Dates Modality Traditional ruler
Cancer June 21 to July 22 Cardinal The Moon
Scorpio October 23 to November 21 Fixed Mars
Pisces February 19 to March 20 Mutable Jupiter

Modern astrologers often add Pluto for Scorpio and Neptune for Pisces.

One element, three kinds of water

Water takes different forms. Cancer is a spring or a well: the cardinal water sign, beginning at the June solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, and read as the sign that starts by caring for someone. A Cancer sun is described as protective of home, family and old habits. Scorpio is a deep lake, fixed water that stays where it is and gets colder and darker the further down you go. The tradition reads Scorpio as private, intense and loyal, with a long memory. Pisces is the sea where rivers end, mutable water that takes the shape of whatever it enters. A Pisces sun is pictured as imaginative, sensitive to atmosphere and hard to pin to a single position.

The Moon is the easy anchor here. It rules Cancer in the traditional scheme, and it governs the tides, which is one reason the tradition has long linked water signs with changeable moods.

The three signs also differ in how they treat the people close to them. Cancer shows love by feeding, sheltering and remembering birthdays. Scorpio shows it by telling you the truth and staying when things are hard. Pisces shows it by sensing what you need and offering it before you have asked. The tradition draws these contrasts to explain why two water signs can both be described as deeply loving and still miss each other's signals.

What water brings to a chart

Water's best-known quality is empathy: water signs are said to notice how a room feels before anyone says it. They are also credited with memory, and remember kindness and injury alike. Conversations with a water sign are expected to move quickly past small talk, and Cancer's protectiveness and Pisces' compassion appear in nearly every traditional portrait. Pisces in particular is linked with music, images and dreams.

Memory shows up in small habits. A Cancer keeps the old photographs and the recipe card, a Scorpio keeps a private record of who stood by them, and a Pisces keeps the song that was playing. The tradition uses these habits to explain why water feels loss and nostalgia more sharply than the other elements, and why an old hurt can resurface years later.

Where water struggles

The risks come from the same openness. Tradition warns that water can soak up the feelings around it until the boundary between self and room is hard to find. Scorpio's loyalty has a counterpart in slow forgiveness, and a grudge can outlast the argument that started it. Pisces is read as slipping away from a conflict instead of facing it, and Cancer can retreat into its shell when hurt, leaving others guessing what went wrong.

Water signs in love

Among the three signs, Cancer and Scorpio, Scorpio and Pisces and Cancer and Pisces are read as the most natural pairs. All three partners feel first and explain second, so the match can become intimate quickly. The caution is a shared mood: two water signs can reinforce a low mood as easily as a warm one, and a pair needs some air or earth in the wider chart to keep the household level.

Earth is the partner that gives water a shape. Earth contains water, and in the reading it gives feeling a form it can live in. Cancer and Virgo is a gentle example of the practical and the caring working together. Scorpio and Capricorn is a more serious one, with Scorpio's intensity matched to Capricorn's patience.

Air sits in the middle for water, and fire is the hardest. A fire sign acts at once, and a water sign wants to feel its way into the decision. Cancer and Sagittarius shows the contrast: the Cancer wants to know where home is, and the Sagittarius is already looking at the map. A hard blend describes friction and predicts nothing, and the results vary with the whole chart. The detailed reasoning is set out in the most compatible zodiac signs.

Water signs at work

Water sun signs are traditionally pictured in roles where reading people is part of the job: care and counseling, hospitality, teaching the young, art, research that needs patience and discretion. Cancer is the one who remembers everyone's circumstances and quietly looks after the team. Scorpio is the investigator, thorough and unwilling to leave a question half-answered. Pisces is the creative thinker who sees a pattern before it can be explained.

In a meeting, the picture is that Cancer notices who has gone quiet, Scorpio notices what was left unsaid, and Pisces notices the moment the mood changed. Between them they pick up what the agenda leaves out. Water often keeps those observations to itself unless someone asks, so a manager who invites them directly tends to hear more than one who waits.

Astrologers tend to advise water signs on boundaries. Taking on a colleague's stress is a familiar pattern, and so is carrying a bad day home. A clear end to the working day, and one person who can hear the honest version of how it went, are the sort of practices the tradition recommends. Water also does better with a structure from earth or air around it than in a role with no outline at all.

When your Sun is not in water

A water Moon runs deep and remembers, and people with one are described as sensitive to atmosphere even when their sun sign is brisk. A water rising sign gives a soft or watchful first impression, someone who takes in a room before speaking. An Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon, for instance, is read as a person who acts boldly and feels protective underneath.

To count the water in your chart, list the sign of the Sun, Moon, rising sign and other planets, then tally the ones in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. The big three calculator gives you the Sun, Moon and rising sign, and the birth chart calculator places the other planets. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so a birth time within a few hours of a change deserves a double check.

The other elements

The fire signs, the earth signs and the air signs have their own pages, and reading them next to this one shows how much of the tradition's picture rests on contrast.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the water signs?
The water signs are Cancer (June 21 to July 22), Scorpio (October 23 to November 21) and Pisces (February 19 to March 20). Tradition reads them as the signs of feeling, memory and intuition.
Which water sign is the most emotional?
Tradition tends to name Pisces as the most absorbent, Cancer as the most openly caring and Scorpio as the most intense but least displayed. All three are read as deeply feeling, and how much a person shows depends on their whole chart.
Are water signs compatible with fire signs?
Astrology counts water and fire as one of the harder blends, since water is read as slow and inward while fire is quick and outward. A fire and water pair can still do well when their Moon or rising signs meet easily, because the sun sign is only one layer of the comparison.
Are water signs psychic?
The tradition links water to intuition and makes no claim of psychic ability for any sun sign. What water signs are described as having is a habit of noticing mood and atmosphere before other people do.
