The chart
Big Three
Your Big Three are your Sun, Moon and rising sign together, and they are where any reading starts. The Sun is your core direction, the Moon your inner weather, and the ascendant the way both reach the surface. Read as one, they sketch far more than the Sun by itself: who you are, how you feel, and how you come across before you say a word.

Your Big Three are the three placements astrologers reach for first: your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. Taken together they give a rounded first read where the Sun alone gives only a rough sketch.
Three placements, three different clocks
Each of the three is measured off a different clock, which is why they carry different information. The Sun moves through one sign a month, so your birth date alone pins it down. The Moon sign changes every two and a half days, so it usually needs your date and a rough time. The ascendant shifts a whole sign about every two hours, so it needs your exact time and place. Stack them up and you have covered the slow, the quick and the fastest hands on the chart.
Who you are, how you feel, how you come across
Tradition gives each a job. The Sun is your core identity and will, the drive underneath everything. The Moon is your emotional life, your instincts and what settles you. The rising sign is your outward style, the first impression and the lens you meet the world through. Read as a set, they describe who you are, how you feel and how you come across, which is far more than a single sun sign can say. Readers usually start here before anything else, because these three anchor the rest of the chart and give a frame to hang every other placement on.
One Sun in Aries, two very different people
Two people share the Sun in Aries, both quick and direct at the core. One has a Capricorn Moon and Virgo rising and reads as reserved and exacting on the surface, careful with feeling. The other has a Leo Moon and Sagittarius rising and reads as warm, loud and expansive. Same Sun, very different people, once the Moon and rising are added.
A starting point, not the whole chart
The Big Three is a starting point, not the whole chart; the planets, houses and aspects all still matter. The rising sign in particular is not a second sun sign, and mixing the two is the most common slip. Because two of the three depend on your birth time, a guessed time can throw off both the Moon in edge cases and the rising sign entirely.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the big three in astrology?
Your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign together. The Sun is your core identity, the Moon your inner emotional life, and the rising sign your outward manner.
How do I find my big three?
Enter your birth date, exact time and city into a birth chart or big three tool. The Sun needs only the date, but the Moon and especially the rising sign need the time.
Why does the big three need my birth time?
Two of the three depend on it. The Moon can change sign during a day, and the rising sign changes about every two hours, so a guessed time can shift both.
