Moon sign

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Where the Sun points to who you are becoming, the Moon holds how you feel: your inner, private world, what soothes you and what you need to feel safe. It is often the placement people notice last in themselves and feel most strongly. Because the Moon moves quickly, changing sign every two to three days, finding yours needs your birth date and, on some days, your birth time.

Next to your Sun sign, the Moon is the placement astrologers ask about first. If the Sun is the self you show and grow into, the Moon is the self you feel from the inside, the part that reacts before you have thought anything through.

Why the Moon changes sign in under three days

The Moon is the fastest mover in a chart. It circles the Earth against the background stars in about 27.3 days, which means it crosses a full zodiac sign in roughly two and a half days and covers about thirteen degrees of sky a day. That speed is the reason a moon sign can change partway through a single date. Two people born on the same day, one in the morning and one at night, can carry different moon signs.

The Moon as your emotional nature

Astrologers traditionally read the Moon as your emotional nature: what you need to feel safe, how you soothe yourself, your instincts and moods, the tone of your home and inner life. Where the Sun sign faces outward, the Moon stays private, closer to how you actually feel than to how you present. The sign it sits in colors all of that, so a Capricorn Moon is read as needing structure and a Pisces Moon as needing quiet and room to dream. The same Moon can also shift in tone with the house it lands in, so where it sits is read alongside the sign it wears.

Born before or after the Moon enters Cancer

Suppose you were born on a day the Moon left Gemini and entered Cancer at two in the afternoon. Born that morning, you have a Gemini Moon, restless and talkative in its feelings. Born that evening, you have a Cancer Moon, tender and tidal. Same birthday, different inner weather, decided by the hour.

Moon sign, moon phase and sun sign

Moon sign and moon phase are different things. The sign is where the Moon sits in the zodiac; the moon phase is how much of it is lit. People also assume their sun sign covers everything emotional, when tradition hands most of that to the Moon. Because the Moon moves so quickly, a birth time is often needed to be sure of the sign at all.

Your moon sign beside the Big Three

The moon sign calculator finds your Moon sign and degree from your birth details, using a noon chart if you have no birth time, and the Big Three tool shows it alongside your Sun and rising. The Big Three guide reads the three together, and what your moon sign means reads each sign in turn.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is my moon sign?

It is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Because the Moon moves fast, you usually need your birth date and a rough time to be sure of it.

What does a moon sign mean?

Astrologers read the Moon as your emotional nature: what you need to feel safe, how you comfort yourself, your instincts and moods, and the tone of your private inner life.

Why do I need my birth time for my moon sign?

The Moon crosses a sign every two and a half days, so on some dates it changes sign partway through. A birth time keeps you from landing on the wrong side of that switch.
