In astrology, the 2nd house rules your own resources: money you earn, things you own, your talents and the values that steer your spending. Modern astrologers add self-worth to that list. Planets here show how you build security and what you hold on to. See which planets sit in yours with the birth chart calculator.

Date of birth

Your free birth chart adds your rising sign, Moon and houses to this.

The 2nd house follows the 1st house of the self. Once there is a self, it needs food, shelter and tools, and that is the territory of this house.

§ 01

What does the 2nd house rule in astrology?

Hellenistic astrologers called the 2nd house the house of livelihood, and some texts also call it the Gate of Hades, a name usually tied to its place just below the eastern horizon, out of sight and turned away from the ascendant. It stood for possessions, income, food and the means that keep a life going. In the Latin mnemonic verse of the Middle Ages its word is lucrum, gain.

Modern astrologers keep money and possessions and add the inner side: what you value, what makes you feel safe, and your sense of your own worth. The 2nd house also covers practical talents you can earn a living from, your relationship with comfort and pleasure in material things, and the habits you bring to saving and spending.

Opposite it lies the 8th house: the 2nd holds what is yours, the 8th what is shared with or owed to others. Together they cover the whole range of resources, from your own paycheck to joint accounts, loans and inheritance.

§ 02

Which sign and planet rule the 2nd house?

The natural sign of the 2nd house is Taurus and its natural planet is Venus. Taurus is the fixed earth sign, steady, sensual and patient, and Venus brings the side of money that buys comfort and beauty. Hence the house's taste for security, pleasure, slow building and loyalty to what has proved its worth. None of this puts your own 2nd house in Taurus.

Where it actually begins depends on your rising sign and house system. The planet that rules that sign is called the ruler of your 2nd house, and its sign and house show where your earning and spending tend to point.

The 2nd house is succedent, one of the four houses that follow an angle, together with the 5th, 8th and 11th. Tradition reads succedent houses as the ones that consolidate and hold what the angular houses begin.

§ 03

What does each planet mean in the 2nd house?

A planet in the 2nd house colors how you earn, spend and value things.

  • Sun in the 2nd house: identity tied to what you build and own. Earning your own way matters, and so does being valued for real skills.
  • Moon in the 2nd house: money as emotional security. Income and spending can rise and fall with moods, and a full pantry feels like peace.
  • Mercury in the 2nd house: earning through words, numbers, trade or ideas. You think a lot about money and often handle several sources of income.
  • Venus in the 2nd house: Venus in the house of Taurus, a sign it rules. Taste, comfort and a talent for attracting resources, along with a fondness for beautiful things.
  • Mars in the 2nd house: working hard and spending fast. Drive to earn is strong, and so is impulse buying.
  • Jupiter in the 2nd house: generosity and a sense that there is enough. Tradition reads good fortune with resources, and a habit of overspending.
  • Saturn in the 2nd house: careful with money and slow to feel secure. Savings grow through patience, and early lean years are a common story.
  • Uranus in the 2nd house: irregular income and unusual ways of earning. Values may break with family habits.
  • Neptune in the 2nd house: a loose grip on money and a pull toward creative or caring work. Clear budgets help.
  • Pluto in the 2nd house: strong feelings about control and ownership. Resources can be lost and rebuilt, and the lessons go deep.
§ 04

The 2nd house through the twelve signs

The sign on the cusp of the 2nd house sets the style of earning and spending. The ruler beside it is the planet to follow next.

Sign on the cusp Ruler How the 2nd house tends to work
Aries Mars earns fast, spends fast, likes independent income
Taurus Venus builds slowly and holds on to what lasts
Gemini Mercury earns through talk, trade or several jobs
Cancer Moon saves for the family and feels safe with reserves
Leo Sun earns through talent and spends with style
Virgo Mercury careful budgets and income through skill
Libra Venus values beauty and fairness, often earns with others
Scorpio Mars (modern: Pluto) private about money and strategic with it
Sagittarius Jupiter optimistic and generous, sometimes too much
Capricorn Saturn disciplined saver who builds over decades
Aquarius Saturn (modern: Uranus) unusual sources of income and independent values
Pisces Jupiter (modern: Neptune) generous and loose with money, drawn to meaningful work
§ 05

What if your 2nd house is empty?

An empty 2nd house is no warning about money. Many charts have four or more empty houses, partly because Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, so those three often share a house or two. Here the cusp sign and its ruler carry the story.

Say the 2nd house begins in Gemini and your Mercury sits in the 10th house. Tradition then links your income with your career and public role, earned through words or trade.

§ 06

How do you find your 2nd house?

The cusp depends on your birth date, exact time and place, because the houses are counted from the rising sign, and a new sign rises roughly every two hours. The birth chart calculator shows the sign on your 2nd house cusp and any planets inside it in all four house systems the site offers, and the rising sign calculator settles the ascendant first if that is all you need. How the planet positions are calculated, and how closely they match NASA JPL, is set out on our accuracy page.

In whole sign houses the 2nd house is the whole sign after your rising sign. In Placidus it can start partway through a sign, so a planet near the cusp may fall in the 1st or 3rd house instead. Read such a planet both ways. For the Venus side of the house, the Venus sign calculator shows where your Venus sits.

Your 2nd house year in annual profections, the timing technique that moves one house forward each birthday, arrives at ages 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73 and 85. Astrologers who use it watch income, spending and big purchases in those years.

Next around the wheel is the 3rd house of communication and siblings, and the houses guide lays out all twelve on one page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the 2nd house represent in astrology?

The 2nd house represents your own resources: money you earn, things you own, your practical talents and the values behind how you spend. Modern astrologers add self-worth, the sense that you are enough. Its natural sign is Taurus and its natural planet is Venus, so it is read as the house of security and enjoyment.

Does the 2nd house show how rich I will be?

The tradition reads the 2nd house as a style of earning, keeping and spending, and as the values money serves for you. It names no sum and fixes no future. Two people with the same 2nd house can live very different financial lives, which depend on choices, chances and the rest of the chart.

What does it mean if my 2nd house is empty?

Nothing alarming about money. With no planets in the 2nd, start from the sign on its cusp, find the planet that rules that sign and see which house it occupies, since that is where your earning tends to point.

What is the difference between the 2nd and 8th house?

The 2nd house is what is yours: income, savings and possessions you earn and control. The 8th house, opposite it, is what you share or owe: a partner's money, loans, taxes and inheritance. Astrologers read the pair as one axis of personal and shared resources.
