Home and roots are the business of the 4th house in astrology: where you live, the family you come from, a parent, property and the private self you keep behind the front door. The house sits at the very bottom of the chart. Planets here describe what makes you feel at home and what you carry from childhood. See your own with the birth chart calculator.
After the 3rd house of talk and errands, the 4th house goes quiet and turns inward. It is the foundation the rest of the chart stands on.
§ 01What does the 4th house rule in astrology?
Hellenistic astrologers called this place the Subterraneous, the part of the sky under the earth, and its starting point is the IC, short for imum coeli, the lowest part of the sky. It stood for parents, especially the father, for houses, land and inheritance from the family line, and for the end of things: the close of life and the way a matter finally turns out. Its word in the medieval Latin verse of the houses is genitor, father.
Modern astrologers keep home and family and add the inner side: your emotional base, your sense of belonging, early memories and the patterns of the household you grew up in. The 4th house also covers the home you make as an adult, real estate, your ancestry and the private life almost nobody sees. When people talk about where they "come from", in the deeper sense, they are talking about this house.
On the far side of the wheel is the 10th house: roots below, career above, private life set against public life. A choice that pulls you toward one end tends to tug at the other, which is why astrologers look at both houses when a move or a career change is on the table.
§ 02Which sign and planet rule the 4th house?
The natural sign of the 4th house is Cancer and its natural planet is the Moon. Cancer is the cardinal water sign, protective and loyal, and the Moon stands for care, memory and emotional need. Shelter and belonging are the result, whatever sign your own 4th house happens to start in.
As one of the four angular houses, alongside the 1st, 7th and 10th, it carries extra weight in traditional astrology, so planets here play a large part in the chart even though the house is so private.
§ 03What does each planet mean in the 4th house?
A planet in the 4th house becomes part of your home life and your emotional foundation.
- Sun in the 4th house: identity rooted in family and home. A private person at heart, often closely tied to a parent or a family legacy.
- Moon in the 4th house: the Moon in the house of Cancer, the sign it rules. A deep need for a safe base, strong family memories and a talent for creating comfort.
- Mercury in the 4th house: a home full of talk, books or work. Many people with this placement work from home or think best there.
- Venus in the 4th house: a love of a beautiful, peaceful home. Family ties are usually warm, and hosting comes naturally.
- Mars in the 4th house: energy spent at home, from renovation projects to family arguments. Independence from family can come early.
- Jupiter in the 4th house: a generous, open household. Tradition reads good fortune with property and a home that grows over time.
- Saturn in the 4th house: a serious or demanding early home and a slow-built sense of security. Many build a solid home of their own later in life.
- Uranus in the 4th house: an unusual family or frequent moves. You need freedom inside your own walls.
- Neptune in the 4th house: an idealized or hard-to-define picture of home. Sensitivity to family moods and a longing for a sanctuary.
- Pluto in the 4th house: powerful family patterns and old stories under the surface. Home is a place of deep change and renewal.
§ 04The 4th house through the twelve signs
The sign on the cusp of the 4th house sets the tone of your home life. In Placidus and the other quadrant systems it is always the sign opposite your midheaven. Follow its ruler to find which part of life your home is tied to.
| Sign on the cusp | Ruler | How the 4th house tends to work |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | a lively, independent home with frequent change |
| Taurus | Venus | a comfortable, stable home and love of good food |
| Gemini | Mercury | a busy, talkative household, often two bases |
| Cancer | Moon | a close family and a strong pull toward home |
| Leo | Sun | a proud home that is good for hosting |
| Virgo | Mercury | an orderly, practical home, often a workplace too |
| Libra | Venus | a peaceful, tasteful home that values harmony |
| Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | a private home with deep family bonds |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | a roaming home life, sometimes abroad |
| Capricorn | Saturn | a structured home with duties and traditions |
| Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | an unconventional household open to friends |
| Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | a gentle, dreamy refuge with loose boundaries |
§ 05What if your 4th house is empty?
An empty 4th house is no sign of a missing family or a weak home life. Plenty of people with close families have no planets here at all, and the cusp sign and its ruler do the talking instead.
If the 4th house begins in Scorpio and Mars sits in your 6th house, for example, tradition links home with work and daily routine: a home office, or a household run on a tight schedule.
§ 06How do you find your 4th house?
The 4th house depends on the rising sign and on the IC, and both shift quickly through the day, so an accurate birth time matters as much as the date and place. The birth chart calculator shows your 4th house cusp and the planets in it, in Placidus or three other systems, and the rising sign calculator gives the ascendant on its own. The planet positions behind both tools are tested against NASA JPL and USNO data on our accuracy page.
The Moon is the natural ruler of this house, so read your own Moon too, with the Moon sign calculator. In whole sign houses the 4th house is the fourth sign from your rising sign and the IC may fall in a neighboring house. In Placidus the house starts at the IC itself.
Ages 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 75 and 87 are 4th house years in annual profections, the method that gives each year of life to the next house, and astrologers watch home, family and moves in them.
The 5th house of creativity and romance comes next, and the overview of all twelve houses puts this one in context.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does the 4th house represent in astrology?
The 4th house represents home, family and roots: where you live, the household you grew up in, a parent, property and land, and your private emotional life. It sits at the bottom of the chart, often starting at the point called the IC. Its natural sign is Cancer and its natural planet is the Moon.
Which parent does the 4th house show?
Older texts give the 4th house to the father and the 10th to the mother, while many modern astrologers give the 4th to the parent who nurtured you or simply to home life. Both readings are in use. Reading the planets in the house tells you more than settling which parent it names.
What does it mean if my 4th house is empty?
It says nothing bad about your family or your home, and most charts leave several houses without planets. Look at the sign on the 4th house cusp for the feel of your home life, then at the house that holds its ruler.
Is the 4th house the same as the IC?
In Placidus, Koch and most other quadrant systems the 4th house begins at the IC, the lowest point of the chart. In whole sign houses the 4th house is the fourth sign from your rising sign, and the IC can fall in the 3rd, 4th or 5th house. The IC keeps its home meaning either way.
