6th House Astrology: Work, Health and Daily Routine

To Hellenistic astrologers the 6th house was Bad Fortune, yet it was also the joy of Mars, the house where Mars was thought to feel most at home. It is one of the houses that make no classical aspect to the 1st, and it stood for illness, injury, hard labor, servants and small animals. Its Latin keyword in the medieval verse is valetudo, health, in the sense of the state of the body, good or bad.

Modern astrologers soften the old picture and center the house on everyday work and wellbeing. The 6th house covers your job as you live it day by day, coworkers and employees, habits and routines, diet, exercise and sleep, the way you respond to stress, and the service you give to others. Pets belong here too, a modern echo of the old small animals. A strong 6th house often shows someone who finds meaning in doing a job properly.

Across from it lies the 12th house of rest and retreat. The 6th keeps the body running through order and routine, the 12th lets it switch off, and astrologers read the two together whenever wellbeing comes up.

The natural sign of the 6th house is Virgo and its natural planet is Mercury. Virgo is the mutable earth sign, careful, useful and observant, and Mercury brings method, analysis and skill with the hands. Craft and steady improvement are the result. Whatever sign opens your own 6th, its ruler is the planet to check next.

The 6th is a cadent house, the last stretch before the descendant, and tradition reads such houses as places of adjustment, where things are prepared and refined.

A planet in the 6th house shapes your work habits and your daily care for body and mind.

• Sun in the 6th house: identity bound up with being useful. You shine through good work and may define yourself by your job.
• Moon in the 6th house: moods tied to routine. A steady daily rhythm helps you feel well, and caring work often appeals.
• Mercury in the 6th house: Mercury in the house of Virgo, which it also rules. Organized, detail-minded and good with systems, lists and repairs.
• Venus in the 6th house: pleasant workplaces and good relations with coworkers. You like work to look and feel good.
• Mars in the 6th house: the old joy of Mars. A hard worker with lots of drive, who needs exercise and can push too hard.
• Jupiter in the 6th house: generous with help and lucky with jobs, by tradition. Moderation in food and work is the lesson.
• Saturn in the 6th house: disciplined, responsible and sometimes overworked. Routines feel heavy until they become strengths.
• Uranus in the 6th house: dislikes fixed schedules. Freelance, flexible or tech work often fits better than a rigid nine to five.
• Neptune in the 6th house: drawn to healing, caring or creative work. Daily structure can drift, so simple anchors help.
• Pluto in the 6th house: intense about work and wellbeing. Habits can change completely when they stop serving you.

With no planets in the 6th, the house reads through the sign on its cusp and that sign's ruling planet, as fully as any other.

If the 6th house starts in Capricorn and Saturn sits in your 2nd house, for instance, tradition ties your daily work closely to earning and to building savings step by step.

Your 6th house is set by the moment and place of birth, counted from the rising sign. Put the date, time and town into the birth chart calculator to see the cusp sign and any planets in the house, and compare the four house systems it offers. The rising sign calculator finds the ascendant alone. The planet math is laid out on our accuracy page, side by side with NASA JPL.

Whole sign houses count it as the sixth sign from your rising sign. In Placidus its cusp can fall partway through a sign, so a planet close to the line is worth reading in both houses.

In a 6th house year of annual profections, at ages 5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65, 77 and 89, tradition turns the focus to jobs, routines and health habits.

The 7th house of partnership comes next, and it is the first house above the horizon. The houses guide covers the whole set.
