The Descendant in Astrology: Your Partner Sign · P. Apian · Cosmographia · 1551
P. Apian · Cosmographia · 1551

In astrology, the descendant is the point exactly opposite your ascendant, 180 degrees away on the western horizon, and the tradition reads it as the place where other people enter your chart. It opens the 7th house of partnership, so the tradition looks there for the kind of partner you are drawn to. With a Leo rising sign, your descendant sign is Aquarius; the descendant calculator finds yours from your birth time.

Date of birth

Your free birth chart adds your rising sign, Moon and houses to this.

The arithmetic takes a second once your ascendant is known. The meaning takes longer, and that is what this piece is about: where the point sits, why it is tied to relationships, what each of the twelve signs looks like on it, and the few misreadings that come up again and again.

§ 01

What is the descendant in astrology?

At the minute you were born, one degree of the zodiac was climbing over the eastern horizon and the degree opposite it was sinking below the western one. The eastern point is the ascendant, your rising sign. The western point is the descendant. On a drawn chart the ascendant sits at the left edge, at nine o'clock, and the descendant faces it at three o'clock on the right. The horizon line runs between them and splits the wheel into the half above the earth and the half below it.

The descendant is also the cusp, the starting line, of the 7th house. Astrologers of the Hellenistic period already tied this house to marriage, and later astrologers widened it to partnerships, contracts and open enemies. Modern readings keep all of it: spouses and lovers, business partners, close collaborators, and also the declared opponent you face across a table. It is one of the four angular houses, the ones that begin at an angle of the chart, and the tradition gives those four the most weight of all twelve.

So the descendant does two jobs at once. As an angle, it is one of the four load-bearing corners of the chart, together with the ascendant, the midheaven at the top and the lowest point at the bottom. As a house cusp, it names the sign that colors your 7th house, the part of life where you stop acting alone and start acting with someone.

§ 02

How does the descendant sit opposite the ascendant?

The two points are always 180 degrees apart, at the same degree of opposite signs. If your ascendant is at 14 degrees Virgo, your descendant is at 14 degrees Pisces. The pairs never change, which is why the descendant needs no formula of its own:

Rising sign Descendant sign What the tradition says you look for in a partner
Aries Libra fairness, tact and a partnership of equals
Taurus Scorpio depth, intensity and complete honesty
Gemini Sagittarius meaning, humor and a wider horizon
Cancer Capricorn structure, reliability and a steady hand
Leo Aquarius room to breathe, friendship and independence
Virgo Pisces gentleness, imagination and compassion
Libra Aries directness, courage and a clear yes or no
Scorpio Taurus calm, comfort and loyalty that needs no testing
Sagittarius Gemini conversation, curiosity and a light touch
Capricorn Cancer tenderness, home and being looked after
Aquarius Leo warmth, open affection and generosity
Pisces Virgo care in small things and practical help

Two patterns run through the table. Opposite signs share a modality, so a cardinal ascendant always has a cardinal descendant, a fixed one a fixed one, a mutable one a mutable one. And the elements pair up the same way every time: fire faces air, earth faces water. The axis joins two signs that work at the same pace but in a different element.

Because the horizon turns with the Earth, the whole axis turns too, about one degree every four minutes and a full sign in roughly two hours on average. Signs rise faster or slower depending on latitude, so some take well under two hours and some well over. That is why a birth time matters here as much as it does for the rising sign. Without one, the honest answer is that the descendant stays open.

§ 03

What does the descendant mean for relationships?

The ascendant describes the self you lead with. The descendant describes the other you meet. The tradition reads it as the set of qualities you look for, admire and often find easiest to see in someone else. Take Aries rising: quick, direct, used to starting things alone. Its descendant in Libra is drawn to a person who weighs both sides and keeps the peace. The partner seems to supply what the ascendant leaves out, and that sense of completion is a big part of why attraction feels the way it does.

The descendant also describes how you behave inside a partnership, the style of the "we." A Capricorn descendant likes clear agreements and a shared plan. A Sagittarius descendant wants a partner who is also a fellow traveler. A Virgo descendant shows love through useful acts. These are styles of relating, and they apply to a business partnership as much as to a marriage.

Two further layers refine the picture. Planets in the 7th house add their own voice: Venus brings warmth and ease, Saturn brings commitment and a slower pace, Mars brings drive and some friction, the Moon brings a need for emotional closeness. Then there is the ruler of the descendant sign, the planet that governs it, and where that planet sits in your chart shows the area of life where partnership business tends to unfold.

Modern astrologers add a psychological reading that is worth knowing. What sits on the descendant is easy to spot in other people and harder to claim for yourself, so it can end up projected entirely onto a partner. Someone with a Leo descendant may love a partner's confidence while keeping their own warmth under wraps. The mature use of the axis is to grow those descendant qualities in yourself as well, so the relationship becomes a meeting of two whole people.

§ 04

The descendant through the 12 signs

The lines below are short keynotes from the tradition, read for the sign on the 7th house cusp. They describe a taste, and any real person is more than one point. For what each sign is like in general, see zodiac signs and their personality traits.

Fire on the descendant: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

An Aries descendant, which comes with Libra rising, is drawn to people who say what they want and act on it. For a rising sign that smooths every edge, a partner who settles a question in one sentence can feel like relief. A Leo descendant, with Aquarius rising, looks for warmth, open affection and someone who enjoys being seen, a counterweight to the cool independence of the ascendant. A Sagittarius descendant, with Gemini rising, wants a partner with a philosophy and a wide horizon: Gemini collects facts, and the descendant looks for the meaning behind them.

Earth on the descendant: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

A Taurus descendant, with Scorpio rising, values calm, comfort and a loyalty that never has to be tested. A Virgo descendant, with Pisces rising, is drawn to care in small things: the partner who remembers the appointment and fixes the shelf. A Capricorn descendant, with Cancer rising, looks for structure, reliability and someone who builds a life step by step.

Air on the descendant: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

A Gemini descendant, with Sagittarius rising, wants conversation, curiosity and a partner who is also good company. A Libra descendant, with Aries rising, looks for grace, fairness and a bond between equals. An Aquarius descendant, with Leo rising, prizes space, friendship inside the relationship and a partner with a life of their own.

Water on the descendant: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

A Cancer descendant, with Capricorn rising, is drawn to tenderness, home and the chance to be looked after for once. A Scorpio descendant, with Taurus rising, looks for depth and intensity and wants the whole truth from a partner. A Pisces descendant, with Virgo rising, values gentleness, imagination and a kindness that sets no conditions.

§ 05

What are the common misunderstandings about the descendant?

The most common one is that the descendant sign is the Sun sign of your future partner. The tradition reads it as a quality you are drawn to, and that quality can arrive in anyone. A person with a Scorpio descendant can share a happy life with a Gemini Sun whose chart carries plenty of Scorpio depth elsewhere. To compare two real charts, astrologers use synastry, which looks at every planet of both people.

The second is that the descendant needs a separate calculation. It is simply the opposite point of the ascendant, so any accurate rising sign gives you the descendant for free. The third is that you can find it from a birthday alone. You cannot, since the axis turns through all twelve signs in a day.

The fourth is that the 7th house is only about romance. It covers every one-to-one bond with a formal or committed shape: business partners, contracts, a close collaborator, even an open rival. The fifth is that an empty 7th house means a life without partners. An empty house only means no planet happens to sit there; the descendant sign and its ruler still describe how you relate, and they do so just as clearly.

§ 06

How do you find and read your own descendant?

You need the same three facts as for any chart: your date, your exact time and your place of birth. The descendant calculator turns them into your descendant sign and degree, the 7th house cusp in four house systems (Placidus, whole sign, Koch and equal), the ruler of the sign with its own sign and house, and any planets in your 7th house. In whole sign houses the 7th house begins at 0 degrees of the descendant sign, so the cusp and the descendant degree can differ there, while the sign stays the same. The positions come from the same astronomy as the rest of the site, checked on our accuracy page.

A simple reading order works well. Start with the sign on the descendant, the keynote from the table above. Add the ruler: its sign says how it acts, its house says where your partnerships tend to play out. Then look at any planets in the 7th house. Finally, read the axis as a whole by setting the descendant against your rising sign, since each end makes sense only next to the other. The rising sign guide explains the eastern end, and the twelve houses, explained shows where the 7th house sits among the others.

§ 07

Why read the descendant together with the rest of the chart?

The descendant gives the frame for relationships, and the rest of the chart fills it in. Venus describes what you find beautiful and how you show affection. The Moon describes what you need to feel safe with someone. Mars describes desire and how you handle conflict. The descendant ties them together as the door through which partners arrive, and the birth chart shows all of them on one wheel, with the ascendant and descendant drawn across the middle.

If you are curious how two sign energies tend to meet, the most compatible zodiac signs looks at pairings sign by sign, and synastry takes it further with two full charts. Through all of it, the descendant stays the most direct answer to one question: what do you go looking for in another person, and how much of it could you also grow in yourself?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is my descendant sign?

Your descendant sign is the sign directly opposite your rising sign, at the same degree. Aries rising gives a Libra descendant, Taurus rising a Scorpio one, Gemini rising a Sagittarius one, and so on around the wheel. Find your rising sign from your birth date, time and place, and its opposite is your descendant.

What does the descendant mean in astrology?

The descendant is the point that was setting on the western horizon when you were born, and it opens the 7th house of partnership. Astrology reads it as the other person in your life: the qualities you look for and admire in a partner, and the way you handle any close one-to-one bond, in love or in work.

Do I need my birth time to find my descendant?

Yes. The descendant moves with the horizon, about one degree every four minutes and a whole sign in roughly two hours. A birthday alone cannot fix it. With a time that is only approximate, check a few nearby times; if the sign stays the same across them, the result is safe to use.

Does my descendant sign show who I will marry?

The tradition reads the descendant as a quality you are drawn to, so it describes a taste in partners and a style of relating. It names no particular person and no particular Sun sign. A partner with a Gemini Sun can still embody your Scorpio descendant, and comparing two whole charts says far more than one point.
