A. Cellarius · Harmonia Macrocosmica · 1661

The personality traits of the zodiac signs come from two old building blocks: the sign's element (fire, earth, air or water) and its modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable). Four elements times three modalities give the 12 signs, each with its own strengths and its own shadow side. If your birthday falls near the edge of a sign, confirm which one is yours in the zodiac sign dates tool.

Date of birth

Your free birth chart adds your rising sign, Moon and houses to this.

One caveat belongs at the start. These portraits are a tradition, a handy language for temperament that astrologers have refined since antiquity, and they describe your sun sign only. The sun sign sets a basic tone. Your Moon, your rising sign and the other planets add the rest, and the last section of this guide explains how. Read the traits below as a mirror: keep what you recognize and leave what you don't.

§ 01

What are the 12 zodiac signs and their personality traits?

The 12 zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, and each one pairs an element with a modality and a ruling planet. The table gives the short version.

Sign Usual dates Element and modality Ruler Core traits
Aries March 21 to April 19 Cardinal fire Mars Brave, direct, quick to start
Taurus April 20 to May 20 Fixed earth Venus Steady, sensual, loyal
Gemini May 21 to June 20 Mutable air Mercury Curious, talkative, quick
Cancer June 21 to July 22 Cardinal water The Moon Caring, protective, sensitive
Leo July 23 to August 22 Fixed fire The Sun Warm, generous, proud
Virgo August 23 to September 22 Mutable earth Mercury Careful, helpful, exact
Libra September 23 to October 22 Cardinal air Venus Fair, diplomatic, sociable
Scorpio October 23 to November 21 Fixed water Mars (classical), Pluto (modern) Intense, loyal, private
Sagittarius November 22 to December 21 Mutable fire Jupiter Optimistic, frank, free
Capricorn December 22 to January 19 Cardinal earth Saturn Disciplined, patient, ambitious
Aquarius January 20 to February 18 Fixed air Saturn (classical), Uranus (modern) Independent, inventive, cool
Pisces February 19 to March 20 Mutable water Jupiter (classical), Neptune (modern) Gentle, imaginative, empathic

The dates are the usual table. The Sun crosses from one sign into the next at a precise moment that moves by a few hours from year to year, so a birthday on the first or last day of a sign can belong to either neighbor. Each sign page below lists the exact changeover times our engine computes; how we calculate.

§ 02

Where do the zodiac signs' traits come from?

The traits come from three layers that tradition laid over the zodiac: element, modality and ruling planet. The element gives a sign its temperament. Fire stands for drive, earth for what can be touched and measured, air for thought and talk, water for feeling and memory. The modality gives its way of moving. Cardinal signs open a season and like to begin things, fixed signs hold the season and stay the course, and mutable signs close it and adapt.

Put the two together and every sign gets a two-word formula: Aries is cardinal fire, Taurus fixed earth, Pisces mutable water. Those two words explain more about a sign than a long list of adjectives. The ruling planet adds a color on top. Mars gives Aries its edge, Venus gives Taurus and Libra their taste for pleasure and balance, and Saturn gives Capricorn its patience. For the element side in depth, read the zodiac elements explained; for how the wheel itself is built, see the zodiac fundamentals guide.

§ 03

What is each sign like, from Aries to Virgo?

Aries

Cardinal fire, March 21 to April 19. The starter of the zodiac. Aries acts first and thinks along the way, with a courage that rarely stops to count the cost. It is honest to the point of bluntness and happiest with a fresh challenge. The shadow is impatience: plenty of projects begun, fewer finished, and a short fuse when things move slowly. More in the Aries zodiac sign profile.

Taurus

Fixed earth, April 20 to May 20. The most settled sign. Taurus likes comfort, good food, solid things and people who stay. It works at its own pace and is hard to rush, which makes it reliable once it has committed. The flip side of that steadiness is stubbornness, the refusal to move even when moving would help. See the full Taurus portrait.

Gemini

Mutable air, May 21 to June 20. The quick mind of the zodiac. Gemini is curious about almost everything, talks easily and can switch topics without losing the thread. It learns fast and loves a good conversation. Its risk is scattered attention, interest that moves on before a job is done. The Gemini zodiac sign page has more.

Cancer

Cardinal water, June 21 to July 22. The keeper of home. Cancer protects its people, remembers what matters to them and builds a safe place for others to land. It reads moods before anyone speaks. The shell has a cost, though: Cancer takes things personally and withdraws faster than it admits. Read more on Cancer.

Leo

Fixed fire, July 23 to August 22. The warm, proud heart of the zodiac. Leo is generous, expressive and made to create, to lead and to be seen. It gives loyalty and expects it back. When pride takes over, Leo can mistake attention for affection and sulk when the spotlight moves. The Leo zodiac sign profile goes deeper.

Virgo

Mutable earth, August 23 to September 22. The useful perfectionist. Virgo notices details others miss, likes to help and finds calm in putting things right. It is modest about its skills and generous with its time. The shadow is criticism, aimed at others now and then and at itself most of all. See Virgo for the rest.

§ 04

What is each sign like, from Libra to Pisces?

Libra

Cardinal air, September 23 to October 22. The diplomat. Libra weighs both sides, looks for the fair answer and dislikes open conflict, which makes it pleasant company and a good mediator. It cares about beauty and manners. The price is indecision: choosing on its own costs Libra a lot, and it can wait too long to commit. More on the Libra zodiac sign page.

Scorpio

Fixed water, October 23 to November 21. The intense one. Scorpio is deep, private and all in with the people it trusts, and it gets to the bottom of things or leaves them alone. Its loyalty runs strong and its memory runs long. That strength turns into a trap when it slides into control or jealousy. See the full Scorpio portrait.

Sagittarius

Mutable fire, November 22 to December 21. The explorer. Sagittarius is optimistic, frank to the point of tactlessness and hungry for freedom and meaning, always aiming at the next horizon. It makes friends easily and teaches what it learns. Its weak spot is carelessness, the promise made too fast. The Sagittarius zodiac sign page has more.

Capricorn

Cardinal earth, December 22 to January 19. The patient climber. Capricorn sets long goals, keeps up the effort for years and takes responsibility seriously. It has a dry humor that people discover late. Its reserve can read as coldness, though it mostly hides caution, and its hardness can turn against itself. Read more on Capricorn.

Aquarius

Fixed air, January 20 to February 18. The original. Aquarius thinks in its own way, cares about groups and ideas and guards its independence. It is often ahead of its time and loyal to friends. The shadow is distance: feelings kept at arm's length, which others can read as cool. The Aquarius zodiac sign profile goes deeper.

Pisces

Mutable water, February 19 to March 20. The dreamer. Pisces is gentle, empathic and imaginative, and it soaks up the mood of a room like a sponge. Artists and helpers often share its gifts. Its temptation is escape, slipping into fantasy when real life weighs too much. See Pisces for the rest.

§ 05

Which zodiac signs share a temperament?

Signs of the same element share a temperament, and signs of the same modality share a pace. The three signs of one element sit 120 degrees apart on the wheel, every fourth sign, which is why tradition treats them as family. Two earth signs born months apart still share a taste for the concrete, and two cardinal signs of different elements share the same urge to open and launch.

Tradition also pairs the elements. Fire and air are the active, outward pair: air feeds the flame, and the two tend to spur each other on. Earth and water are the receptive, inward pair: water gives earth something to shape. Mixes across the pairs, fire with water or earth with air, are read as tension, a difference in speed and style that the rest of both charts can soften. For the four families one by one, see fire signs, earth signs, air signs and water signs. For pairs of people, the most compatible zodiac signs guide covers the classic matches.

§ 06

Is your sun sign enough to describe you?

Your sun sign is one piece of a chart with many pieces, so it rarely describes a whole person. Your Moon describes what you need to feel safe, as explained in what your moon sign means. Your rising sign describes how you come across when you walk into a room. Each planet adds its own voice. That is why two Leos can seem like opposites: one with Virgo rising, quiet and methodical, the other with Sagittarius rising, loud and always on the move.

The useful move is to notice which traits ring true and which ring false. A trait that does not fit you often points to a Moon or rising sign that pulls elsewhere, or to a cluster of planets in another sign. Count the elements of all your planets and one usually outweighs the rest, a heap of earth, say, or almost no air. Tradition calls that dominant element the key the whole chart is played in, whatever the sun sign alone suggests.

So take these portraits as an opening question. The free birth chart calculator places every planet in its sign and house, and the zodiac explained answers the hard questions, starting with the gap between the signs and the constellations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the 12 zodiac signs in order?

In order, the 12 zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The order follows the Sun's yearly path, starting at the March equinox around March 20 and ending with Pisces at the close of the following winter.

What decides a zodiac sign's personality?

A sign's personality comes from three parts: its element (fire, earth, air or water), its modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and its ruling planet. Aries, for example, is cardinal fire ruled by Mars, which is why tradition reads it as quick, brave and eager to start.

Which zodiac sign has the best personality?

Astrology ranks no sign above another. Each of the 12 has its strengths and a shadow side it can learn from: Aries its impatience, Scorpio its need for control, Pisces its habit of drifting away from hard facts. A trait usually reads as difficult only in its overdone form.

Why don't I match my zodiac sign's traits?

Your sun sign is one placement among many in a birth chart. The Moon, the rising sign and the other planets often sit in different signs and can pull the picture in another direction. Two people born under the same sign can come across very differently for that reason.
