A zodiac cusp is the boundary where one sign ends and the next begins, and being born "on the cusp" means your birthday falls within a few days of the moment the Sun crossed it. The Sun crosses each line at one exact minute, which moves by several hours from year to year, so a cusp birthday belongs to one sign or the other. If you were born near a change, enter your date in the zodiac sign dates tool to see which side you fall on.

§ 01

What is a cusp in astrology?

In astrology a cusp is a starting line. The twelve signs each take 30 degrees of the Sun's yearly path, and the cusp of a sign is its 0 degree mark, the point where it begins. Houses have cusps too, and in that sense the word is pure geometry.

In everyday speech, "born on the cusp" means something looser: a birthday in the last days of one sign or the first days of the next. Many people with such a birthday read two horoscopes and recognize themselves in both, so the idea of a blended personality has grown popular. Traditional astrology does not use it. The Sun is at a specific degree when you are born, and that degree belongs to one sign. A person born a few hours before the Sun reached Taurus has the Sun at the very end of Aries, and an astrologer reads it as Aries.

That does not make the feeling of being "a bit of both" wrong. It usually has a better explanation elsewhere in the chart, which comes up further down.

§ 02

Why does the sign change at a different minute each year?

The Sun reaches the first degree of each sign at a fixed point of its yearly circuit, measured from the March equinox. Our calendar, though, runs 365 days in a normal year, while the Sun takes about 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes to come back to the same point. So each year the change comes close to six hours later on the clock. Every leap year, February 29 pulls it back by almost a day, and the cycle starts again.

You can watch that rhythm in the Aries to Taurus change, computed by our ephemeris engine in Eastern time:

Year Sun enters Taurus
2024 April 19, 10:00 a.m. EDT
2025 April 19, 3:56 p.m. EDT
2026 April 19, 9:39 p.m. EDT
2027 April 20, 3:18 a.m. EDT
2028 April 19, 9:09 a.m. EDT
2029 April 19, 2:56 p.m. EDT
2030 April 19, 8:44 p.m. EDT

From 2024 to 2027 the moment walks forward by roughly six hours a year, then 2028, a leap year, sets it back to the morning of the 19th. The steps are not exactly equal, because the Moon and the planets tug on the Earth and its orbit is slightly elliptical, so the engine works from the Sun's real position each time.

Time zones add a second layer. In 2026 the Sun entered Taurus at 9:39 p.m. on April 19 in New York, which was 01:39 on April 20 in UTC and already the early hours of the 20th in London. One instant, two calendar dates. This is why fixed lists, which say Taurus starts on April 20, are right for most birthdays and wrong for a few. The April zodiac sign post walks through that month day by day.

§ 03

Sign change dates and times in 2026

Every change in 2026, computed by our engine and given in Eastern time (EST in winter, EDT from March 8 to November 1):

Sun enters Date and time (Eastern)
Aquarius January 19, 8:45 p.m. EST
Pisces February 18, 10:52 a.m. EST
Aries March 20, 10:46 a.m. EDT
Taurus April 19, 9:39 p.m. EDT
Gemini May 20, 8:37 p.m. EDT
Cancer June 21, 4:24 a.m. EDT
Leo July 22, 3:13 p.m. EDT
Virgo August 22, 10:19 p.m. EDT
Libra September 22, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Scorpio October 23, 5:38 a.m. EDT
Sagittarius November 22, 2:23 a.m. EST
Capricorn December 21, 3:50 p.m. EST

Four of these are also the seasons: the Sun enters Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. For other years, the month posts carry their own tables, and the zodiac sign dates tool works out any year you enter.

§ 04

Twelve boundaries make twelve cusps. Online you will often see each one with a name of its own:

Cusp Popular name
Pisces and Aries cusp of rebirth
Aries and Taurus cusp of power
Taurus and Gemini cusp of energy
Gemini and Cancer cusp of magic
Cancer and Leo cusp of oscillation
Leo and Virgo cusp of exposure
Virgo and Libra cusp of beauty
Libra and Scorpio cusp of drama and criticism
Scorpio and Sagittarius cusp of revolution
Sagittarius and Capricorn cusp of prophecy
Capricorn and Aquarius cusp of mystery and imagination
Aquarius and Pisces cusp of sensitivity

These names come from personology, a birthday system built in the late 20th century by Gary Goldschneider, best known through his book The Secret Language of Birthdays. It splits the year into 48 periods, with a week of about six days around each sign change: the cusp of power, for example, runs from about April 19 to 24. That makes the names modern pop astrology: a readable shorthand that blends two neighboring signs, with no root in the classical texts. The exact days of each cusp week vary a little from one website to the next.

The most searched of them is the Aries and Taurus cusp, the cusp of power. The popular portrait pairs Aries drive with Taurus staying power. In the tradition, the two signs keep their own natures. Aries is cardinal fire under Mars, quick to start, and Taurus is fixed earth under Venus, steady and patient. A person born on April 19 or 20 has the Sun in exactly one of them, and the rest of the chart decides how much of the other shows.

§ 05

Why a cusp birthday can feel like two signs

There are better reasons for that feeling than a shared Sun. Three are common.

  1. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun. Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from it, and Venus never more than about 47. For a cusp birthday, there is a good chance at least one of them sits in the neighboring sign. A Taurus Sun with Venus in Aries gives the Aries flavor a real place in the chart.
  2. The Moon and the rising sign. Both can sit in any sign, and either can echo the sign next door. What your Moon sign means explains the emotional side.
  3. The Sun's degree. A Sun at 29 degrees of Aries has crossed nearly the whole sign, and a Sun at 0 degrees of Taurus has just arrived. Astrologers sometimes note this as a late or early degree, while still reading one sign.

A full chart shows all of it at once. The birth chart calculator places the Sun, the Moon, the rising sign and every planet from your date, time and place of birth.

§ 06

How to check your exact sign

Three details settle a cusp birthday.

  • The year. The change moves by hours from year to year, so April 19 is Aries in some years and partly Taurus in others.
  • The time of birth. On a change day, the hour decides. A birth certificate or a hospital record usually has it.
  • The place. The change happens at one instant everywhere, but the clock reads differently in each time zone, which can move the date itself.

With those in hand, the zodiac sign dates tool tells you whether your date was a change day and which side you were born on. If you do not know your birth time, it can still tell you whether the question matters: on most dates near a cusp, the Sun stays in one sign all day.

§ 07

Is the cusp the same as Ophiuchus or a 13th sign?

No. The cusp question is about the twelve signs of the tropical zodiac, which are measured from the March equinox and never change. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun passes in front of, and it belongs to astronomy's star map, a separate system. The Ophiuchus post explains why it does not add a sign in Western astrology. The zodiac fundamentals guide lays out how the signs, the seasons and the constellations relate.

§ 08

Reading a cusp birthday well

The cusp names are fun, and many people enjoy the blended portrait. The tradition offers a sharper picture: one Sun sign, read together with the Moon, the rising sign and the planets around it. Astrology describes tendencies in that picture and leaves the choices to you. If your birthday sits on a line, find out which side the Sun was on, then look at the rest of the chart to see why the neighboring sign still feels familiar. Even zodiac stones go by the Sun's actual sign, so a cusp birthday takes the stones of whichever side the Sun was on.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to be born on the cusp?

It means you were born within a few days of the moment the Sun moved from one sign into the next. Your Sun still sits in one sign only, which a calculation for your birth date, time and place settles. The idea of a blended cusp personality belongs to modern pop astrology.

Can you be two zodiac signs?

Your Sun can only be in one sign at a time. The change happens at a single instant, such as 9:39 p.m. Eastern time on April 19, 2026, when the Sun entered Taurus. Born before it, you are an Aries, and born after it, a Taurus. Other planets in your chart can sit in the neighboring sign, which is often what people feel as a mix.

What is the Aries Taurus cusp called?

Popular birthday books call the days around the Aries to Taurus change, roughly April 19 to 24, the cusp of power. The name comes from modern personology, a 20th-century birthday system, and has no root in classical astrology. Your actual Sun sign is either Aries or Taurus.

Why do sign dates differ between websites?

Most sites print fixed dates such as April 20 for Taurus, while the real change moves by several hours from year to year and can fall on the 19th or the 20th. Time zones add to it, because the same instant can land on two calendar dates. A calculator that uses the Sun's real position for your year gives the exact answer.
