Moon sign calculator: what is my moon sign?
NovaOracles' free moon sign calculator finds your Moon sign, its degree and the Moon phase you were born under, with no sign-up. Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. The Moon changes sign every two to two and a half days, so your birth date usually settles it; on a changeover day your birth time decides, and the calculator shows the exact minute of the change.
Your Moon sign
The Moon is your inner weather: how you feel, what settles you and the needs you carry under the surface.
The record
Enter your birth date and place, then press the button. Your Moon sign appears with its degree, the Moon's phase that day and a short reading.
The calculator places the Moon to the degree with the same astronomy engine as our birth chart, adds the phase the Moon was in, and gives the meaning of your Moon sign in a short reading. For example, on December 2, 1979, in New York, the Moon left Taurus for Gemini at 6:02 p.m. local time. A birth at 9:05 p.m. that evening has the Moon in Gemini at 1°45′, nearly full, while a birth that morning has a Taurus Moon.

The Moon in each sign, in short
The Moon in Aries
Your feelings arrive fast and burn clean. You need honesty and movement, and you tend to recover from a storm far quicker than the people around you expect.
The Moon in Taurus
You settle when life feels steady. Good food, familiar places and people who stay put restore you like almost nothing else can.
The Moon in Gemini
You process your feelings by talking them through. A curious mind keeps your heart light, but it still needs a safe place to finally land.
The Moon in Cancer
You feel everything, including all the things nobody says out loud. Home, for you, is less a place than one particular person you trust.
The Moon in Leo
Your heart wants to be seen. Warm attention restores you, and when it is given, you return it with fierce loyalty.
The Moon in Virgo
You calm yourself by being useful. A little order soothes you, and what looks like worry is really just care that has not found somewhere to go yet.
The Moon in Libra
You steady yourself through connection. Conflict costs you more than it costs most people, and beauty does something close to healing for you.
The Moon in Scorpio
You feel in absolutes. Trust builds slowly in you, but once you have given it, your devotion is total and it does not forget.
The Moon in Sagittarius
You need room to breathe. Optimism is your resting state, and a simple change of scenery can fix almost any mood you find yourself in.
The Moon in Capricorn
You keep your feelings in careful working order. You show love by being reliable, and you only let yourself soften where you already know it is safe.
The Moon in Aquarius
You need a little distance before your feelings come clear. Friendship is your love language, and your freedom is not up for negotiation.
The Moon in Pisces
You absorb the moods around you without meaning to. Solitude, music and water give back to you what the world washes away.

§ 01
What your Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. Your Sun sign describes the self you grow into; in astrology the Moon describes what you need in order to feel safe: your emotional reflexes, your habits and the way you comfort yourself when things go wrong.
Astrologers read the Moon together with the Sun and the rising sign, the trio known as the big three. This page covers the Moon on its own, with more detail than a big three reading has room for: the exact degree, the phase of the Moon at your birth, and what happens when the Moon changed sign on your birthday.

Why does the Moon need more than your birthday?
§ 02
Why does the Moon need more than your birthday?
The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so a birthday is enough to name it. The Moon is the fastest body in the sky. It moves between about 12 and 15 degrees a day and crosses a whole sign of 30 degrees in about two to two and a half days, so it goes around the whole zodiac in 27.3 days.
That speed means that on roughly four days in ten the Moon changes sign at some point during the day. On those days the birth time settles the sign, and so does the local date. This calculator works in the time zone of your birthplace, with the offset and daylight saving time that were in force on the day, so a birth in Istanbul or New York keeps its own calendar date and lands on the right side of the change.

When the Moon changed sign on your birthday
§ 03
When the Moon changed sign on your birthday
If you leave out the birth time, the calculator looks at the whole local day, from midnight to midnight. When the Moon stayed in one sign, your Moon sign is certain and only its degree is an estimate. When the Moon crossed into the next sign, you see both signs and the time of the crossing, to the minute, in your birthplace's local time.
The calculator shows both signs side by side. A birth certificate, a hospital record or a parent's memory of morning or evening is often enough to settle which one is yours. If your recorded time sits within a few minutes of the change, treat it with some caution, because birth times are often rounded to the nearest quarter hour. Reading both short descriptions can help too: many people recognize their Moon at once.

How is the Moon sign calculated?
§ 04
How is the Moon sign calculated?
The Moon's position comes from the lunar theory in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, the truncated ELP2000-82 series, corrected for nutation to give the apparent longitude of date. Signs are tropical, measured from the spring equinox, as in Western astrology. The time of each sign change is found by narrowing the search down to the second, and in our checks against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris those times agree to within about ten seconds; the accuracy page shows the comparison.
Your place is turned into coordinates and a time zone, and your local clock time into Universal Time using the historical rules of that zone. The whole calculation runs in your browser. To show the first line of today's reading, your birth details are sent once to our server, which does not store them; the place search sends only the place name you type.
§ 05
The Moon's phase at your birth
§ 05
The Moon's phase at your birth
The result also shows the phase the Moon was in, from the angle between the Moon and the Sun: how much of the disc was lit and whether the light was growing or shrinking. A birth near the new moon happens with the Moon close to the Sun, a birth near the full moon with the Moon opposite it.
Astrology reads the birth phase as a second layer on top of the sign. People born under a waxing Moon are said to build and reach outward, while those born under a waning Moon tend to reflect, refine and let go. That reading is symbolic, and our guide to the phases of the Moon keeps it clearly apart from the astronomy of each phase.

§ 06
What should I read after my Moon sign?
The big three calculator puts your Moon sign beside your Sun and rising sign, and the rising sign calculator finds the one that needs the exact time. Sun, Moon and rising explained compares the three in plain terms.
To see the Moon as it is today, open the lunar calendar; the moon phases guide explains the cycle. The calculator reads your birth date and time in your birthplace's own clock, and why charts differ explains how that clock, the zodiac and the house system shape any chart.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Usually, yes. The Moon stays in each sign for two to two and a half days, so on most dates it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. On the days it does not, the calculator shows both signs and the minute of the change. On December 2, 1979, for example, the Moon entered Gemini at 6:02 p.m. New York time.
How is my Moon sign calculated here?
The calculator takes the local day at your birthplace, with the time zone and daylight saving rule in force on that date, and computes the Moon's position in the tropical zodiac from the lunar theory in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms. With your recorded birth time it computes the Moon for that exact minute and names a single sign.
What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?
Your Sun sign is where the Sun was on your birthday, and the Sun moves into a new sign about once a month. Your Moon sign is where the Moon was, and the Moon moves on every two or three days. In astrology the Sun describes your core self and the Moon your emotional needs and instincts.
Is my Moon sign the same in Vedic astrology?
Often it is not. Vedic astrology measures signs against the stars, about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used here, so a Moon in the first 24 degrees of a tropical sign falls in the previous sign in a Vedic chart. The birth chart tool can switch to the sidereal zodiac if you want to compare.
How accurate is this Moon sign calculator?
Our checks against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris put the Moon's sign changes within about ten seconds of the reference times. Birth times are often rounded to the nearest quarter hour, so when a birth falls near a change, the recorded time is the real limit.
Do time zone and daylight saving time change my Moon sign?
On days when the Moon changes sign, they can, because the clock time places your birth before or after the change. The calculator counts your birthday from midnight to midnight in your birthplace's local time, with the offset and daylight saving rule of that year, so an evening or early morning birth keeps its own date. With a birth time you also see when the change happened in your local time.
What does my Moon sign mean?
In astrology the Moon sign describes your emotional needs, your habits and how you comfort yourself when something goes wrong. The Sun sign points to who you grow into, the Moon sign to what you need to feel safe. The Moon passes through all twelve signs in about a month, so people born in the same month often have different Moon signs. It is an interpretation, not a verdict.
