North and South Node calculator: where are my nodes?
NovaOracles' free North Node calculator finds your North and South Node signs and degrees, the house of your North Node and the mean node beside the true one, with no sign-up. The North Node is where the Moon's orbit crossed the ecliptic heading north at your birth. Astrology reads the axis as a line from what comes easily to what you are here to grow into. Your birth date settles the sign; a birth time adds the house.
Your North Node (true node)
The lunar nodes are the two crossings of the Moon's path over the Sun's, read in astrology as the axis between habit and growth.
The record
Enter your birth date and place, then press the button. You get the North Node's sign and degree, the South Node, the mean node, the dates the node held that sign and, with a birth time, its house.
Accuracy: the mean node agrees with the Swiss Ephemeris to within an arcsecond; the true node, computed from the Moon's orbit in the Meeus lunar theory, to within one arcminute (1900 to 2099, the range the tool covers).
Enter your birth date and birthplace, and the time if you know it. The calculator gives the true North Node, the South Node opposite it and the mean node for comparison, with the house when you give the time.

What are the lunar nodes?
§ 01
What are the lunar nodes?
The Moon's orbit is tilted by about five degrees to the ecliptic, the Sun's yearly path through the zodiac. The two points where the orbits cross are the lunar nodes. At the North Node, or ascending node, the Moon crosses going north; at the South Node it crosses going south, always exactly opposite. Eclipses happen only when a new or full moon falls near one of them, which is why eclipses and the nodes belong to the same geometry; the 2027 eclipse calculator shows the next ones.
The Sun's pull makes the plane of the Moon's orbit wobble, so the nodes slide backward through the zodiac and complete a full circle in about 18.6 years. On average they spend about eighteen and a half months in each sign.

True node or mean node?
§ 02
True node or mean node?
There are two ways to place the node. The mean node smooths the motion into an even backward drift. The true node follows the Moon's actual orbit from moment to moment, so it rocks back and forth around the mean point; from 1900 to 2099 our engine finds the two up to about two degrees apart, and the true node even moves forward on about a quarter of all days.
Astrologers are split, and astrology programs offer both. This calculator leads with the true node and shows the mean node beside it. Most of the time both sit in the same sign. When they do not, read both descriptions; many astrologers take the true node as the finer measure and the mean node as the traditional one.

What your North Node describes
§ 03
What your North Node describes
Modern astrology reads the nodal axis as a line of development. The South Node describes what comes naturally, habits and talents that fit like an old coat. The North Node points to what you are learning, the direction that feels unfamiliar and often uncomfortable, yet more rewarding the further you go. The short readings on this page pair each North Node sign with the South Node sign opposite it.
Since the node spends a year and a half in a sign, many people share yours. The house gives it a setting, and a planet close to either node brings that planet's themes to the axis. The birth chart calculator shows every planet and aspect in one wheel.
§ 04
The house of the nodes
§ 04
The house of the nodes
With a birth time and place the calculator gives the North Node's house in the Placidus system by default, or in whole sign, Koch or equal houses on the switch; the South Node is in the opposite house. A North Node in the tenth house with the South Node in the fourth, for example, is read as growth through public work away from the comfort of home. Without a time the house is left open.
Every 18.6 years the nodes return to their natal place, around the ages of eighteen or nineteen, thirty-seven, fifty-six and seventy-four. Astrologers read these nodal returns as moments when the direction of your life comes up for review, often around an eclipse season.
§ 05
What does the North Node mean in each house?
§ 05
What does the North Node mean in each house?
The North Node's house names the area of life the axis points toward, and the South Node in the opposite house names the familiar ground. With the North Node in the first house and the South Node in the seventh, growth is read as coming from standing on your own feet after leaning on partners. In the second, opposite the eighth, it comes from building your own resources, and in the third, opposite the ninth, from everyday learning and conversation. In the fourth, opposite the tenth, the pull is toward home and inner life, in the fifth, opposite the eleventh, toward personal creativity, and in the sixth, opposite the twelfth, toward practical routines.
The other six houses reverse those pairs. A North Node in the seventh points to growth through partnership, in the eighth through shared trust and depth, and in the ninth through study and travel. In the tenth the growth comes through a visible role in the world, in the eleventh through friends and causes, and in the twelfth through quiet reflection and letting go of control.

How the nodes are calculated
§ 06
How the nodes are calculated
The mean node uses the standard formula for the mean longitude of the Moon's ascending node from Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, and agrees with the Swiss Ephemeris to within a fraction of an arcsecond. The true node is the osculating node: from the Moon's position and velocity in the ELP2000-82 lunar theory the engine finds the plane of its orbit at that instant and where that plane cuts the ecliptic. Our checks against the Swiss Ephemeris true node from 1901 to 2099 stay within one arcminute.
Because the true node moves only a few arcminutes a day, and sometimes almost stops, a small difference in position can move the time of a sign change by an hour or more. On a changeover day, treat the minute as approximate and compare with the mean node. The calculation runs in your browser. To show the first line of today's reading, your birth details are sent once to our server, which does not store them.

What do I need to find my North Node, and where do I go next?
§ 07
What do I need to find my North Node, and where do I go next?
Your birth date and birthplace are enough for the sign; the birth time adds the house. The calculation runs in your browser and the tool is free. Once you have your node, the birth chart calculator shows it among your planets, and Chiron is the other slow point worth looking up.
The node and eclipses share the same geometry. Why eclipses matter explains the link in plain terms, the moon and eclipses guide gathers the basics, and the 2027 eclipse calculator shows the eclipses ahead. By the true node, the North Node entered Aquarius on July 26, 2026 (Eastern time) and stays until March 26, 2028. North Node in Aquarius follows that stretch house by house.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the true node or the mean node?
Both are in use. The true node follows the Moon's real orbit; the mean node is its smoothed average. They are at most about two degrees apart and usually in the same sign. This calculator shows both, with the true node first.
Do I need my birth time to find my North Node?
No. The node spends about eighteen months in a sign, so the date is enough for the sign. The birth time adds the house, which gives the axis its setting in your life.
Where is my South Node?
Always exactly opposite the North Node: same degree, opposite sign. If your North Node is at 12 degrees Gemini, your South Node is at 12 degrees Sagittarius. The calculator shows it under the result.
What do the lunar nodes have to do with eclipses?
Eclipses happen only when a new or full moon falls close to a node, so the node's sign tells you which part of the zodiac the eclipses of those months fall in. Astrologers watch eclipses near their natal nodes closely.
How is my North Node calculated?
The calculator computes the Moon's orbit for your birth date and leads with the true node, which follows that orbit as it really is, with the mean node, its smoothed average, shown alongside. The true node comes from the Moon's position and velocity in the ELP2000-82 lunar theory, and the mean node from the standard formula in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms. Positions use the tropical zodiac, and the South Node is always exactly opposite.
How do I find my North Node house?
Enter your birth time and place along with the date. The calculator then gives the North Node's house, in Placidus by default, or in whole sign, Koch or equal houses if you switch systems, and the South Node sits in the opposite house. Without a birth time, only the sign is shown.
