The Devil
The Devil tarot card meaning centers on attachment: card 15 of the Major Arcana points to a habit, craving, person or belief that has a grip on you. It asks how much of that hold is actually voluntary. If it turned up today, check whether the theme repeats by drawing a second card tomorrow.
§ 01What is going on in the Devil card?
The Devil card shows a horned, bat-winged figure crouching on a black block. Above its head an inverted pentagram floats; one hand is raised and the other holds a torch pointing down. At the base of the block stand a naked man and woman, each with small horns and a tail, a chain looped around each neck.
The chains are loose, and that changes the picture. Each loop is wide enough to lift over the head, and neither figure is bound by hand or foot. The pair echoes the couple in the Lovers card, now turned toward a block instead of an angel. The card shows people held by something they could remove if they remembered that they could.
§ 02What does the Devil mean upright?
Upright, the Devil describes any pattern that runs you. It might be a phone you cannot put down, a loop of worry, a person you keep returning to, a job you stay in because of the status. The card names the pull without condemning it, and asks you to count what it costs.
A useful question is "what do I call a necessity that is really a habit?" Most people have one answer ready. The Devil is also the card of strong appetite and honest desire, so it does not say all pleasure is trouble. The test is whether you are choosing it or being driven by it.
§ 03The Devil in love
In love, the Devil points at chemistry, jealousy, control and the pull of something that is intense and not entirely good for you. For a couple it can mean a dynamic that runs on habit or on anxiety: staying together because leaving seems harder, or keeping score in ways neither of you enjoys. Look at whether you each feel free inside the relationship.
For singles, it can describe a strong attraction to the wrong pattern, such as the person who is never available. As an answer about feelings, the Devil suggests a strong physical or emotional pull, possibly mixed with possessiveness, that is worth examining before you act on it.
§ 04The Devil at work and with money
At work the card asks about the approval, status or income that you feel stuck behind. What would you do differently if you were not afraid of losing it? That question is about attitude, and it is no reason to change jobs tomorrow or to make any money move. Sometimes the answer is to stay and change how you relate to it.
§ 05Is the Devil a yes or a no?
In our yes-or-no mode the Devil answers no. The card shows something that holds you in place, and the pull is working against you, so it advises against the move you are asking about. A no from the Devil is rarely a ban. Ask what you want, and whether it is you or the habit asking. You can try the question again in the yes or no mode after a day of thought.
§ 06What does the Devil mean reversed?
Reversed, the Devil is traditionally read as release: loosening a grip, naming a dependency, or starting to step out of a pattern. It can also mean the chain is only now becoming visible to you, which can feel worse before it feels better. Another reading is a refusal to see: the hold is still there and you insist it is not. Reversed readings sit outside the tool, which deals upright cards only.
§ 07Which sign goes with the Devil?
The Golden Dawn tied the Devil to Capricorn, the cardinal earth sign linked with structure, ambition and the weight of obligation. The link is easy to follow: Capricorn is the sign of ties and duties, and the Devil is the card of the ties we carry without examining them. See the Capricorn zodiac sign page, and the birth chart tool shows where Capricorn is in your own chart.
§ 08A day without one habit
Name one habit you describe as unavoidable and go without it for a day. If it is the phone before bed, leave it in another room. If it is a nightly snack or a compulsive check of a feed, skip it once. Notice how much of the pull was the habit and how much was a real need.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does the Devil tarot card mean evil or the devil?
No. In a reading the card describes attachment: habits, cravings and ties that hold you in place. It is a mirror for something you may already know about yourself, and it carries no prediction or judgment.
Is the Devil a yes or a no?
In our yes-or-no mode the Devil answers no. Something is holding you in place and the pull works against you, so the card advises against the move. Ask what you are reaching for, and why.
What does the Devil card mean in love?
The Devil card in love asks where need or habit keeps you in something that no longer feeds you. That can be a strong physical pull, a jealous pattern or a relationship you stay in out of routine. Seeing it clearly is the first step toward choosing.
