Sun Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Work, Yes or No

The Sun card shows a naked child on a white horse, arms spread wide and a long red banner in hand. The child wears a wreath of flowers and nothing else. Behind them a low brick wall runs across the picture, and above it tall sunflowers turn their faces toward a huge yellow sun with a human face and straight and wavy rays.

The wall is easy to miss, and it matters: the child has left an enclosed garden behind and is now riding in the open. The horse is white, a color tradition links with purity and ease, and it is unsaddled and unhurried. Sunflowers always turn toward the light, so they stand for the same attraction the child shows. Of the Major Arcana, this is the card with the fewest shadows.

Upright, the Sun describes honest energy. You know what you want, you can say it, and what you see is accurate. Plans work because they are simple, not because they are clever. It is a good day for the conversation you have been postponing because it will go better than you feared, and for finishing something because you can see how.

The card also describes plain pleasure: being outdoors, being praised for the right thing, sitting in a warm room with people you like. Your whole life need not be solved for it to apply; right now the light is enough to see by, and that is worth using.

In love, affection is easy and open. For a couple the card suggests time spent together without a task: a walk, a meal, a laugh that needs no explanation. If you have been in a heavy stretch, the Sun is a sign that things can lighten.

For singles, it asks you to be visible. Say what you like, show up as you are, and trust that what works will be obvious. As a reading of someone's feelings, the Sun suggests the other person feels warm and positive toward you and is comfortable being open about it.

At work, good results are visible, so share them and let people see your progress. The card favors clear communication and honest credit. It speaks to mood and openness, and says nothing about what to do with money.

In our yes-or-no mode the Sun is a clear yes. Clarity, vitality and good light surround the question and nothing is hidden, which makes it the most open answer in the deck. A yes from the Sun is still a mirror, so check that your question is something you would be glad to see answered that way. Try it in the yes or no mode.

Reversed, the Sun is traditionally read as dimmed energy, delayed good news or optimism that has run ahead of the facts. It does not turn the card into a bad one. Think of a cloudy day: the sun is up, and you cannot see it. It may point to joy you are not letting yourself feel. A reversed Sun comes from your own deck, as the tool draws upright cards only.

In the Golden Dawn system, the Sun card is tied to the Sun itself, the body it is named after. In a birth chart the Sun stands for core identity and vitality, which is what the card shows in a child's open arms. Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in when you were born, and the birth chart tool shows it.

Spend part of the day outdoors and do one thing purely because it is enjoyable. Walk the long way, eat lunch on a bench, or answer a friend with a voice message. Give it no purpose.
