Temperance Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Work, Yes or No

Temperance

XIV · Temperance · Sagittarius

The Temperance tarot card meaning is blending: two things that seem opposed get combined slowly, in the right proportion, until they work as one. Temperance is card 14 in the Major Arcana, and moderation here is a skill more than a rule. On a day when you feel pulled between two extremes, pull a card and see what it asks you to mix.

§ 01

What does the Temperance card show?

The Temperance card shows a winged figure in a white robe with one foot on dry ground and one foot in a pool. Water flows in a steady arc between two cups held in the hands, which seems to defy gravity. On the chest is a small square holding a triangle, and on the forehead is a sun-like mark. Irises grow at the water's edge.

Behind the figure a path leads up to distant mountains, and above the peaks a crown-like glow hangs in the sky. The picture does not hurry. The path is long and the figure is attending to the pouring, which is the whole task. Foot on land and foot in water is the clearest symbol: the card belongs to both worlds, and mixes them without drowning in either.

§ 02

What does Temperance mean upright?

Upright, Temperance describes steady, moderate effort, and it favors the person who does a little each day over the one who works in bursts and then collapses. The card also describes flexibility without losing yourself: you can adjust to what is in front of you and still be recognizably you.

In ordinary life this looks like cutting a big task into equal daily portions, eating and sleeping at regular hours during a hectic week, or finding the middle between saying nothing and saying everything in a hard conversation. The measure matters more than the amount. A little of the right thing, repeated, tends to beat a lot of the wrong one.

§ 03

Temperance in love

In a relationship Temperance looks for a shared pace. Each person arrives with different needs for closeness, space, talk and quiet. The card asks you to mix them, not to decide whose version wins. A couple drawing it might ask when each of them feels most connected and build a few small habits around those times.

Singles can read the card as an invitation to go slowly. Notice how you feel after a first date, and again after the third, instead of deciding in the first hour. For someone's feelings, Temperance suggests a careful person who wants things to develop at an even rate, with no sudden gestures.

§ 04

Temperance at work and with money

At work the card favors patience and a balanced load. Check whether you are overcommitted in one area and neglecting another, and shift your hours toward the middle. It also suits collaboration: two people who work differently often make a better result by blending their methods. The card speaks about habits and attitude only, and leaves money decisions to a qualified person.

§ 05

Is Temperance a yes or a no?

In our yes-or-no mode Temperance answers yes, because patience and the right mix lead to the right result, so the card supports going ahead at a steady, unhurried pace. A yes from Temperance usually comes with a condition, and the condition is pacing. If your question has a rushed deadline built into it, notice that. You can ask again in the yes or no mode with the timing included.

§ 06

What does Temperance mean reversed?

Reversed, Temperance is traditionally read as imbalance, which might mean too much of something like work, sugar, scrolling or advice. It can also mean a slow plan abandoned because the results did not show quickly enough. The card then asks where the mix has tipped and what small adjustment would bring it back. Reversed Temperance is a physical-deck reading, since the tool draws upright cards only.

§ 07

Which sign goes with Temperance?

The Golden Dawn linked Temperance to Sagittarius, the mutable fire sign, a pairing that can look odd since Sagittarius is known for enthusiasm and Temperance for restraint. Read together, they describe how a long-range aim gets reached: with a direction and with patient steps. See the Sagittarius zodiac sign page for the sign, and use the birth chart tool to see where Sagittarius is in your chart.

§ 08

Half the usual dose

Pick one habit that has been all-or-nothing and do it at half the usual intensity today. Walk for twenty minutes instead of skipping the week and then running five miles. Answer messages in one block, not in a scatter. At the end of the day, note whether the smaller dose felt easier to repeat tomorrow.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Temperance a yes or a no in tarot?

In our yes-or-no mode Temperance answers yes. Patience and a balanced mix lead to a good result, so the card supports going ahead at a steady pace. It favors slow progress over a dramatic move.

What does Temperance mean in love?

Temperance in love means mixing what each of you needs and finding a shared pace. In a couple it points to compromise that feels natural, not forced. Singles can read it as a sign to go slowly and see how the first weeks feel.

What does Temperance mean reversed?

Reversed Temperance traditionally points to excess, imbalance or impatience: too much of one thing, or a plan dropped because it was slow. It asks where the mix has tipped. Our tool draws upright cards only, so reversed readings need your own deck.
