Justice Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Work, Yes or No

Justice

XI · Justice · Libra

The Justice tarot card meaning is fair weighing: you look at the facts, accept what your actions caused and decide on that basis. Card 11 of the Major Arcana applies to contracts, arguments and private promises alike. Draw a card for today to see which part of your day it speaks to.

§ 01

What is happening in the Justice card?

In the Justice card a crowned figure sits upright between two gray columns, with a purple curtain behind, holding a sword that points straight up in the right hand and scales that hang level in the left. The red robe and green cloak are plain, and the calm face shows no anger.

Each object has a job. The scales stand for weighing, the sword for the cut that follows once the weighing is done, and the columns for a frame everyone agrees to. The curtain behind the figure hints at what stays out of sight, since even careful judgment works with partial knowledge. Waite's deck numbers this card 11 and puts Strength at 8, a swap from older Marseille decks, so you will see both orders in books.

§ 02

What does Justice mean upright?

Upright, Justice asks you to be accurate about what you owe and what you are owed. The card points to an honest account of money, favors, tasks never divided evenly and promises that got blurry. Punishment is beside the point; the card asks what is true and what follows from it.

That often feels uncomfortable in a quiet way. You may find that the person who looks wrong is partly right, or that you have been generous in a way that is hard to keep up. Justice does not take sides until it has weighed both. Whatever you decide, the card wants it to be a decision you could explain out loud to the other party.

§ 03

Justice in love

In a relationship, Justice looks at balance. Who plans, who apologizes, who adjusts their schedule? Nothing needs to be scored like a ledger, but a pattern that always runs one way tends to sour. A good use of the card is one calm conversation where each of you says what feels fair and what does not.

Singles can read it as a call for clear standards. Decide what you will and will not accept, and be as honest about what you offer. If the question is feelings, Justice suggests the other person is thinking things over carefully, perhaps weighing whether the two of you are well matched, rather than acting on impulse.

§ 04

Justice at work and with money

Here the card concerns attitude: read the agreement before you sign it, give people credit where it is due, and keep your own records straight. If a dispute is on your mind, write down both versions as each party would tell them. This is reflection, not legal advice, and a real contract question belongs with a qualified person.

§ 05

Is Justice a yes or a no?

In our yes-or-no mode Justice answers maybe, because the card weighs before it rules and points to a decision that rests on facts you may not have collected yet. A Justice maybe is useful, since it says the answer is findable. Read the fine print, ask the one question you have been avoiding, then try the yes or no mode again with a clearer question.

§ 06

What does Justice mean reversed?

Reversed, Justice is traditionally read as lopsided terms, avoided responsibility or a verdict reached on half the evidence. Reversed Justice can also describe the opposite problem, where you judge yourself harder than you would judge a friend. The reversed card asks where the scales have tipped, and in whose favor. The tool draws upright cards only, so a reversed Justice has to come from your own deck.

§ 07

Which sign goes with Justice?

The Golden Dawn linked Justice to Libra, the cardinal air sign whose symbol is the scales, and the fit is direct: Libra stands for fairness, partnership and seeing both sides, so the two are usually read together. Our Libra zodiac sign page covers the sign, and the birth chart tool shows where Libra falls in your own chart. Having Libra in your chart does not make you fair by default, and drawing Justice says nothing about your sign.

§ 08

Writing down the other side

Choose one small disagreement, a chore split or a text you answered too sharply, and write down the other person's side in three sentences, as they would say it. Then decide what, if anything, you owe. Ten minutes of that tends to settle more than an hour of replaying the argument.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Justice a yes or a no in tarot?

In our yes-or-no mode Justice answers maybe. The card weighs before it rules, so it points to a decision that depends on facts you may not have gathered yet. Check the details, then ask again.

What does the Justice card mean in love?

In love, the Justice card asks whether give and take is fair on both sides. For couples that can mean an honest talk about who carries what. For singles it often points to standards you want to keep, and to being truthful about what you offer.

What does Justice mean reversed?

Traditionally, reversed Justice points to unfairness, dodged responsibility or a decision made on partial facts. It can also describe being too harsh on yourself. Our tool draws upright cards only, so a reversed reading needs your own deck.
