The High Priestess

II · The High Priestess · Moon

The High Priestess tarot card meaning is listening, patience and the thing you already sense but have not put into words. Card 2 of the Major Arcana is a woman who sits very still, and the stillness is the lesson. Draw her from the tarot card of the day and she asks you to slow down before you answer anyone, yourself included.

§ 01

What does the High Priestess show?

In the Rider-Waite deck a woman in blue robes sits between two pillars, one black marked with a B and one white marked with a J. She wears a crown of a full moon flanked by two crescents, and a crescent rests at her feet. In her lap is a scroll with the letters TORA, partly tucked into her robe so that only a piece can be read. Behind her a curtain is patterned with pomegranates, and past it you can glimpse water.

The pillars set up a pair of opposites, and she sits calmly between them without choosing a side. Look at the scroll: knowledge is present, and she has not shown all of it. The pomegranate curtain stands between you and the water, as if the answer is near but still behind a veil.

§ 02

What does the High Priestess mean in everyday life?

Upright, the High Priestess favors a pause. Something is still forming, and it will not be improved by pushing. This might be a decision where you do not yet have the full picture, or a feeling that you cannot quite name.

She also stands for the kind of knowing that comes before explanation. Many people recognize it: you walk into a room and sense the mood, or you read a message and feel something is off before you can say why. The card does not tell you to trust that feeling blindly. It asks you to notice it and then check it against facts.

§ 03

How does the High Priestess read in love?

For singles, pay attention to what the other person leaves out. A conversation tells you as much by its gaps as by its sentences. Notice also what you have been holding back, because the card works in both directions.

For couples, the High Priestess suggests time and quiet over a long talk. If something has been unspoken between you, a calm evening may bring it out better than a direct question. Asked about someone's feelings, she describes a reserved person who feels more than they show and is not ready to say all of it. Pressing for an answer rarely helps.

§ 04

What does the High Priestess say about work and money?

At work, gather information quietly before you commit or speak up in a meeting. Read the document twice, listen to the room, and let others show their positions first. The card values being well informed over being first.

In matters of money, it is again only about attitude. If you feel pulled to decide quickly, the card suggests waiting for the missing facts. What to do with money is a question for a qualified adviser.

§ 05

Is the High Priestess a yes or no card?

She is a maybe. Half the facts are still hidden and the scroll stays half covered, so the honest answer is that it depends on what you have not yet learned. That is a real answer: it tells you the question is not ready. Ask your own question in the yes or no mode and she will come up as a maybe there as well.

§ 06

What does the High Priestess reversed mean?

The reversed card is traditionally read as intuition that is being ignored, or secrecy that has grown into distance. Another reading is that you are looking for hidden meaning where the plain fact would do. The tool draws upright cards only; reversed readings need a physical deck.

A simple exercise is to write down what you already suspect, privately, in one sentence. Then ask what evidence would confirm or change it.

§ 07

Which planet belongs to the High Priestess?

The Golden Dawn ties the High Priestess to the Moon, which fits the crown and the crescent at her feet. The Moon is the planet of cycles, moods and what changes beneath the surface. To see how that works in your own chart, read the glossary entry on the Moon sign, or use the Moon sign tool to find where the Moon stood on your birth date.

§ 08

An evening with one question

Choose one question you have been trying to settle fast, and sit with it for an evening instead. Do not look for the answer, just write down what you feel first when you picture each option. In the morning, read the note again. If the same line shows up twice, it is probably telling you something.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the High Priestess a yes or no card?

The High Priestess is a maybe. Half the facts are still hidden, and the scroll in her lap stays half covered. The card asks you to wait, listen and find out more before you decide, so it will not give a clean yes or no.

What does the High Priestess mean in love?

In love she asks you to notice what the other person leaves out, and what you have been keeping back yourself. Asked about the other person's feelings, it describes someone reserved who is not ready to say everything yet. Quiet attention helps more than pressing for an answer.

What does the High Priestess reversed mean?

Traditionally the reversed card is read as ignoring your own intuition, or as secrecy that has grown into distance. It asks what you already sense and have not admitted. A short note to yourself, with no audience, is a good first step.
