The Tower

XVI · The Tower · Mars

The Tower tarot card meaning is the sudden collapse of something that stood on a weak base. Card 16 of the Major Arcana shows lightning hitting a tall building. The card has the worst reputation in the deck, though its message is more useful than its picture suggests. To see what it points at today, ask the tool for a card and read it slowly.

§ 01

What does the Tower card show?

The Tower card shows a tall gray tower with a golden crown on a narrow crag, and a bolt of lightning knocks the crown loose. Flames burst from the windows, and two figures plunge head first from the building against a black sky. Small flame-shaped drops hang in the air around the tower, and in the Rider-Waite design there are twenty-two of them.

The tower is a human construction: tall, narrow and proud. It sits on a rock that has no room for anything else. The crown is the part that falls first, which is the part meant to show that the structure was important. The picture shows an idea about security exposed as brittle; it says nothing about any particular person's life falling apart.

§ 02

What does the Tower mean upright?

Upright, the Tower describes a sudden realization or event that breaks an assumption you built your plans on. The thing that falls was often shaky for a long while, and the lightning simply makes it visible to you. Examples include a deadline you could never have met, a story you told yourself about a person, or an arrangement that depended on nobody asking questions.

The first reaction is usually shock. The second is often relief, or room to breathe. The card's practical point is that a structure with a weak foundation costs more to maintain every month. Once it is down, the ground is clear, and you can build something that fits what is true.

§ 03

The Tower in love

In a relationship, the Tower is a hard truth coming out. It might be a conversation that cannot be postponed, a fact that was left unsaid, or a recognition that you each have been playing a role. What rested on a false assumption may not hold, and what was honest will usually come through the same moment intact.

Singles often meet this card when an illusion drops: a picture of someone that was more imagination than person. If the other person's feelings are the question, the Tower suggests they are shaken, perhaps by something they just realized, and need time to settle before saying anything useful.

§ 04

The Tower at work and with money

At work the card asks you to examine the premise under a plan. If the whole project depends on one customer, one person's goodwill or one number staying put, the Tower asks you to check that early, while it is cheap to change course. This is about attitude and review, and it is no signal for any money move.

§ 05

Is the Tower a yes or a no?

In our yes-or-no mode the Tower answers no for this question. The structure you are asking about is unstable and may not hold, so the card advises against building on it as it stands and asks you to check the foundation first. When you have repaired the weakest part, ask the question again in the yes or no mode.

§ 06

What does the Tower mean reversed?

Reversed, the Tower is traditionally read in two ways: a collapse avoided or delayed, where the trouble is real and you are working to prop it up, or a change that happens slowly and quietly, with no lightning. In both cases the question is whether a deliberate, calm rebuild would be easier than a forced one later. Only a physical deck gives you a reversed Tower, since the tool draws upright cards.

§ 07

Which planet goes with the Tower?

The Golden Dawn tied the Tower to Mars, the planet of force, cutting and decisive action, and the link fits an image of sudden impact. In astrology Mars is the planet of what you do when you act, and it can show both courage and rashness. To see where Mars falls in your chart, use the Mars sign tool, and for the whole chart the birth chart tool.

§ 08

Checking the weakest part

Inspect the thing you have been most reluctant to look at, such as a budget line you avoid, a message you have not opened, or a repair you postponed. Spend ten minutes finding the weakest part and decide what the first fix would be. Fixing the weak part early is much smaller than being surprised by it later.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tower a yes or a no?

In our yes-or-no mode the Tower answers no. The structure in question is unstable and may not hold, so the card advises against building on it as it stands. Check the foundation first, then ask again.

Does the Tower card predict disaster?

No. Tarot does not predict events. The Tower is read as a picture of something that was built on a weak assumption giving way, and the useful question is which assumption in your own plans is the weakest. Many people feel relief once it is out in the open.

What does the Tower mean in love?

In love, the Tower means a hard truth surfaces, and whatever rested on a false assumption may not hold. Couples can read it as a moment to be honest about what has been avoided. Singles often meet it as the end of an illusion about someone.
