Judgement

XX · Judgement · Pluto

The Judgement tarot card meaning is a call you can no longer ignore: time to look honestly at what has happened, settle the account and begin again. Card 20 of the Major Arcana shows an angel with a trumpet and people rising from their coffins, and nobody is condemned. Take a card for today to see what it asks of you.

§ 01

What happens in the Judgement card?

In the Judgement card, an angel, traditionally read as Gabriel, blows a trumpet with a white flag marked with a red cross. Below, on the water, men, women and a child rise from open coffins, gray with age and facing upward. Their arms are raised and their faces are turned to the sound. Mountains stand in the background and the sea is flat and bright.

The scene borrows from the Last Judgment of Christian art, but the people in this picture are not afraid. They respond to a call. The trumpet is a sound you hear once you stop making other noise, and the rising figures stand for the parts of you that you buried or set aside. The picture suggests that nothing needs to stay buried forever, and that you answer by standing up.

§ 02

What does Judgement mean upright?

Upright, Judgement describes a moment of reckoning that leads to renewal: you review a stretch of time, a relationship or a project, and see it clearly, including what you did well, what you avoided and what is still unfinished. The review is honest and not harsh, and after it comes the decision you have been postponing.

In daily life it can be the Sunday evening when you finally admit what is not working. Perhaps you answer the message you have left unread for a month, or you apologize for something old. The card is also about vocation: a sense that something is calling you, and that you have heard it more than once. It asks if you will answer.

§ 03

Judgement in love

In love, an old matter returns for an honest talk. It could be a person from your past, or a topic in your current relationship you have both avoided. Something can finally be settled, and what can be forgiven is forgiven. The condition is honesty on both sides.

Singles often meet the card when they are ready to close a past relationship properly, and stop carrying it into the next. If you want to know how someone feels, Judgement suggests the other person is reflecting on how things went and may be ready to talk or to clear the air.

§ 04

Judgement at work and with money

At work, review your record: what have you finished, what have you promised and not done? Then respond to the call you have been putting off, whether that is applying for something, speaking to a manager or starting a project. This card concerns self-review and attitude. A qualified professional is the one to ask about money.

§ 05

Is Judgement a yes or a no?

In our yes-or-no mode, Judgement answers yes, because a clear call to act and a settled account favor going ahead. The yes comes with one condition: be honest about what led here before you move, and the card will not let a hidden "but" pass. You can try the question in the yes or no mode and notice your first reaction to the answer.

§ 06

What does Judgement mean reversed?

Reversed, Judgement is traditionally read as self-doubt, a call you ignore, or a harsh inner critic that will not let you move on. Reversed Judgement can describe someone who keeps reviewing the past without ever acting on it, or who refuses to look at it. The question is what you would do if you forgave yourself for what you already know. The tool deals upright cards only, so reversed Judgement is a matter for your own deck.

§ 07

Which planet goes with Judgement?

Modern decks link Judgement to Pluto, the planet of deep change, endings and rebirth. The original Golden Dawn tied it to the element fire, specifically to a purifying flame, and the two readings agree on the theme of renewal. To see where Pluto sits in your own chart, use the birth chart tool. The element page explains fire, earth, air and water in astrology.

§ 08

The decision you postponed

Make the decision you have postponed, and write down your reason in one line. It can be small: whether to keep a subscription, reply to a message, or sign up for a class. The one-line reason matters because it tests whether the decision is honest. Then act on it before the day ends.
