Free rising sign calculator: what is my rising sign?
NovaOracles' free rising sign calculator finds your Ascendant sign and its exact degree, with your Midheaven beside it, and needs no sign-up. Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute and place of your birth, so it takes your exact birth time and birthplace. A new sign rises about every two hours on average, and at London's latitude Aries takes about 52 minutes while Libra takes almost three hours.

Your Ascendant
Enter your birth date, exact time and place, then press the button. The dial turns to your rising sign and its exact degree, with your Midheaven kept alongside.
This free rising sign calculator works from real astronomy: the dial computes your Ascendant and sweeps to the answer. For example, a birth on June 15, 1985, at 8:30 a.m. in London, on daylight saving time (UTC+1), has Leo rising at 8°00′. At 9:30 a.m. the Ascendant stands at Leo 18°34′, and from 10:36 a.m. Virgo is rising.

What a rising sign is
§ 01
What a rising sign is
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that sat on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. Where the Sun sign is set by the date alone, the Ascendant is set by the time and the place, because the whole zodiac wheels past the horizon once a day.
Astrologers read it as the face you meet the world with: your first impression, your instincts, the style you reach for before you think. It also fixes the frame of your birth chart, because the Ascendant marks the start of the first house and sets where every other house begins.
§ 02
Why your birth time matters so much
§ 02
Why your birth time matters so much
The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a guess of even an hour can land you in the wrong sign. This rising sign calculator asks for your exact time for that reason, and reads the historical time zone of your birthplace so the Ascendant is computed for the real sky over that spot, not a rounded one.
If you do not know your time, a birth certificate is the surest source. Without it, the tool falls back to local noon and flags the result as approximate, since a noon answer is only one of the twelve the day could give.
§ 03
Finding your rising sign without a birth time
§ 03
Finding your rising sign without a birth time
The rising sign is the one placement you cannot recover from your birthday alone. Because the zodiac passes the eastern horizon in twenty-four hours, the Ascendant moves into a new sign about every two hours, so a single day holds around twelve possible answers, and none of them can be singled out as yours without the hour.
When you mark the time as unknown, this calculator does not guess. It computes the chart for local noon and labels the result approximate, so you can see the shape of the wheel without mistaking a placeholder for your true Ascendant. Your Sun sign still holds, since the date fixes it, and if you find your time later, even to the nearest half hour, it pins the rising sign down.

§ 04
How this rising sign calculator works
Every answer here is computed for your exact birth moment. The tool converts your local birth time to universal time using the daylight saving rules that applied on that date, then works out which degree of the ecliptic was climbing the eastern horizon over your exact birthplace.
The Ascendant and the Midheaven come from the classical spherical formulas and agree with the Swiss Ephemeris to within one arcminute. The planets elsewhere on the site are tested against NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris; the accuracy page shows the comparison. The whole calculation runs in your browser from a bundled city and time zone dataset, and to show the first line of today's reading, your birth details are sent once to our server, which does not store them. Your result rests on the birth minute, the birthplace and the clock rules in force there on that date, and why charts differ shows how each of them shapes a chart.

Where your rising sign shows up
§ 05
Where your rising sign shows up
Because the Ascendant sets the first house and the whole house frame, astrologers give it a lot of weight. They read it as the lens the rest of the chart looks through, so the same Sun and Moon can come across quite differently behind a fiery rising sign than behind a watery one.
It is also the part strangers tend to meet first, the manner and the look people describe before they know you well. That is why a reading often starts here, at the surface, and works inward toward the Sun and the Moon.

§ 06
Rising sign, Sun sign and Moon sign
Your Sun sign is your core, the Moon sign your inner weather, and the rising sign the way both reach the surface. Together they are often called the big three, the shorthand most astrologers start a reading from.
The Ascendant is the piece a horoscope by Sun sign alone can never see, which is why two people born on the same day can feel so different. To read all three at once, the birth chart calculator draws the full wheel.

What do I need to find my rising sign, and where do I go next?
§ 07
What do I need to find my rising sign, and where do I go next?
You need your birth date, birthplace and a birth time as exact as you can get it; a birth certificate is the best source. The calculation runs in your browser and the tool is free. The big three calculator puts your rising sign beside your Sun and Moon. Your progressed Ascendant for today or any other date is in the progressed chart calculator.
Your rising sign explained covers what the Ascendant shows, the rising sign guide gathers the basics, and why charts differ explains the time zone, house and zodiac choices behind every chart. The birth chart calculator draws the full wheel.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my rising sign?
Enter your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace in the calculator above, and it returns your rising sign with its degree. The time and place matter most, because the eastern horizon passes through all twelve signs in a day. A birth certificate is the best source for the time, since a remembered or rounded time can put you in the neighboring sign.
Can I find my rising sign without knowing my birth time?
Not reliably. A single day holds about twelve possible rising signs, one roughly every two hours, so the birth time decides which one is yours. If you mark the time unknown, the calculator computes a noon chart and labels the rising sign approximate. Your Sun sign still holds, and a time to the nearest half hour is often enough to settle the rising sign.
How long does a rising sign last?
About two hours on average, though the real span depends on the sign and on your latitude. At London's latitude, Pisces and Aries each rise in about 52 minutes, while Virgo, Libra and Scorpio each take about 2 hours 50 minutes. So an hour's difference in birth time can change the rising sign at one time of day and leave it alone at another.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Within a few minutes is ideal. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes on average, and at London's latitude an hour can carry it anywhere from about 10 to 35 degrees. In the London example above, 8:30 a.m. gives Leo 8°00′ and 9:30 a.m. gives Leo 18°34′.
Why is my rising sign different from my Sun sign?
Your Sun sign depends on the date, while your rising sign depends on the time and place. The horizon turns through all twelve signs every day, so the two usually differ. They match for people born around sunrise, when the Sun itself sits on the eastern horizon. Astrologers count this among the reasons people who share a Sun sign can seem so unalike.
Do time zone and daylight saving time change my rising sign?
Yes, because the Ascendant is calculated from universal time. Enter the local time exactly as it appears on your birth certificate: the calculator applies the time zone and daylight saving rule that applied in your birthplace on that date and converts the time itself. You do not need to add or subtract an hour. If you enter coordinates by hand, you choose the time zone yourself.
What does my rising sign mean?
Your rising sign is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. In astrology it is read as the first impression you give, your manner and your first reflex, and it sets your first house, which is where the other houses begin. The Sun sign describes your core identity. This is a description, not a verdict: the rising sign is a language you can use when you think about yourself.
